The offense has its own serious problems. The coaches and the players on offense should not give a crap about the defense in any shape or form. Their only focus should be scoring points on every drive, whether the drive takes 10 minutes or 10 seconds.

After a couple of close losses, many people on this internet message board have become very Negative Nancies. I think it's time for fans to rally and support this team. I don't understand the negativity.

This is a good football team. They need to clean up some mistakes, rbs have to stop fumbling, defense has to get more pressure and create chaos (more sacks and INTs). This is all manageable.

There are a lot of young talented players on this team, and our True Fresh QB is awesome. I think he has the potential to become one of the all-time greats. To me, the future looks very bright for Memphis Tiger football.

The fundamental flaw here is that this isn't the player's fault, and inferring that it is puts the onus on the wrong people. This is a scheme problem on defense. We are nearly the worst team in all of college football on defense, and that isn't because of blown coverages or arm tackles. McIntyre is a disaster.

So what, pray tell, is the scheme that you recommend in this pass happy, up tempo conference? And how is a former National Coach of the Year suddenly an idiot to the point where you know more about the game than he? I can’t wait for your answer.

I get it, you're happy with our defense being among the worst in the country, and attack anyone who wants to see it improve. That's your right.

I'm not happy with it costing us games. It's just a difference in how we enjoy watching college football.

Edit: Upon further reflection, you're correct. The scheme we're running is perfect to win football games. McIntyre is one helluva DC, but the players won't do what he says. The 3-3-5 is a great scheme. If we give up 500 yards this weekend, it won't be McIntyre's fault, it's all on the players for being...what's a good word? Help me out here. Lazy? Unfocused? You know a lot more about this than do I, I'll let you enumerate their faults.

RE: Silvefield - Tigers need to listen to each other
I heard on the radio that our team defensive efficiency rating was 73 and our offensive efficiency rating was 60. (They mentioned ESPN, but I can't actually find the stats - just going from Calkins word.)
So there's actually not much difference on either side of the ball. I'm sure the fumbles the last 2 weeks have killed our offensive efficiency.
I see large problems with both.
But I suppose the O is understandable with the 2 guys touching the ball the most being 2 freshmen. The D is certainly more disappointing as it is a lot of upperclassmen and we were told all offseason how the D was going to be the strong point of this team.

In general, the tackling has been good. In general, we have been getting decent pressure considering that we rush 3 or 4. We have given up a few long plays, but certainly nothing that compares to the long plays our offense has generated the last 5 years. Our defensive backs have fared poorly on 50/50 balls; we are losing a lot of battles.

The bottom line is that our DC is putting our players in horrible situations. Our opponents swing the ball out to their backs who are wide open, and we are relying on a defender to run up and make a tackle in space, one on one. If he makes the tackle they still gain between 4-8 yards. We drop 7 or 8 but we rely on them to defend when the quarterback often has all day to throw.

IMO, the answer on how we should defend, is exactly how every opponent has defended US so far. Our backs and receivers almost never have any room when they catch the ball near the line of scrimmage because the defensive backs play tight on them. The defensive lines put a lot of men in the box to defend against the run, not so worried that we will break a long one on them.

When we do complete a long pass, unless it goes for a touchdown, the defense does exactly the same thing, and dares us to complete another long pass in order to beat them.

Time of possession our last 4 games is 36:51 to 23:09. How the hell are you supposed to win ballgames that way?

The bottom line is there is a defensive problem going on that shouldn't be with this much talent. A missed diagnosis can lead to a delay in treatment and find Memphis right back in the days of old that a number of you speak so unfondly of. Look... in 2020 the 3-4 defense was introduce giving up 289.6 passing yards per game. This year the defense is averaging 343.2 passing yards per game and ranked #205 in total defense, The year Norvell left the new DC's defense averaged 195.9 yards passing per game and ended the season at a respectable ranking of #57. The defense is keeping themselves on the field too long and they're not forcing nearly enough turnovers. I don't blame the players and I don't want to blame RS but if he doesn't realize there's a problem with McIntyre then he becomes suspect.

"Ranked # 205 in total defense. "
Is that a joke? There are 130 FBS teams. (We are ranked 120 out of 130 in total defense).

No joke. There are 298 CFB teams which include FCS as well as FBS. This means there are several FCS teams that play better defense than Memphis. SMDH

Coach Mac says our D has been on the field longer than any D in the country.
Hello?
Continuously playing so far off the ball, giving up 3-4 yards a play will do that to you.
Giving up so many 3rd and 4th down conversions will do that to you.
Having an offense that tries to run into the teeth of the opposing D when they get a lead will do that to you.
Didn't Temple convert three 4th downs on three different scoring drives?

Yes the defense was bad, but in their defense one of those 4th downs was clearly stopped short but the ref gave Temple an insane spot that gave them the first down. I'm not gonna blame the whole game on officiating, but that was total bs.

But yes generally the defense needs to get off the field on 3rd downs. Need to bring some heat and get some sacks. Pressure the qb and make them throw some interceptions.

I think the defense will get better, just like they did last season. Offense will continue to get better also. Might even end up with a pretty good football team by the time SMU rolls into town. I still have full confidence in CRS and the future of this program.

This is a good point. The defense we played the last couple games likely would have done the trick many seasons when we averaged over 40PPG.

No, no, don't you know that McIntyre was Coach of the Year once, even though his overall record was terrible? The oracle said so in this very thread. That one year makes him a genius. All these yards and points we're giving up are not his fault, they're the teenagers who can't work miracles with his scheme.

Some of y'all weren't avid Tiger football fans in the 70's & 80's...and it shows

In those days I used to imagine Hell being made to watch the Tigers move the ball down the field to first and goal from the one only to end up with the other team recovering the ball in our end zone after a bad snap on fourth and goal from our own fifteen yard line. Over, and over and over.

You young folks have not been properly exposed to real Tigers football suffering.
