Nah, issues is Memphis swooped in and landed 2 lotto guys. Not an eyelash would have been batted had UK landed these guys and a booster was running around saying how much he was paying them.

We see this every time Memphis lands a top guy in basketball (Wiseman, Rose, Wagner, even Keith Lee). We are held to a different standard - and sometimes investigated.

Our local paper reported the FedEx stuff.

show me the article.

When we landed our 2 lotto guys there were no NIL deals. They may get one yet but there was no FedEx exec there at their recruiting dangling an NIL carrot like many in the media have implied. It's a completely made up narrative that media members irresponsibly ran with and then got legs through social media and opposing teams message boards and more.

The bottom line is others want to promote the story that Penny landed this recruiting class with the help of FedEx and NIL. It's a dig at Memphis and at Penny.

This was all done through innuendo and "read between the lines" reporting, particularly on social media without a single source.

What is glossed over is that maybe our facilities, culture, and the fact that we have Penny Hardaway, Larry Brown, and Rasheed Wallace on staff might just be a factor in why they came here.

Lol...So because you didn't see it didn't happen...Look it up. I don't subscribe to the CA so I cannot.

It was reported...Whether it was factual or not...It was reported. Article was posted on the August 4th...Long before he committed.

You made the claim. It's on you to prove it. I assert that there is NO CA article stating that our lotto picks were offered NIL deals by FedEx. I call complete BS on you. Prove me wrong.

It's this type of half truths and false narratives with no substantial backing or source that is exactly the problem I was talking about. Something picks up steam through social media and all the sudden it's gospel.

I do wish if there were no FedEx NIL deals, which I do not know - writers would quit saying that is so.

I can see where initially it would help on recruiting but if it does not exist, it only adds heartburn if there is no such thing when they get here or get serious.

It's a recruiting violation to offer NIL deals to a student as part of their recruitment.

Our recruits may yet get NIL deals from FedEx or others but there was not one in place or offered as a part of their recruitment.

Agreed

That is the company line...

And I am sure there is nothing but rumors with this...The rumors may be true...But I doubt anyone can prove it.

Yeah, but are they the only local media in the country throwing out NIL names? You know not. Yet that is the only one we hear about.

Different standard.

Honestly I have seen things about Miami guaranteeing deals...I have heard about local shops offering deals...Other schools papers may throw out NIL names (haven't seen them) but it really isn't a national story without a top 5 recruiting class to go along with it.

I have heard Saban vaguely hint at deals his players get

But I have not heard of other schools...But I honestly don't follow other schools like that...And also since I am plugged into Memphis some of the stories I do see may not be National.

BYU's situation was a national story without top players involved. Their sponsor will cover tuition for all of their walk-ons.

Good story...But that is about the same as the Miami deal.

Paying everyone...And honestly it is a great gesture by the Corp.

The rumors are not true. The rumors were started by people thinking that money had to be involved for Memphis to land a big recruiting class.

The rumors flying were stated by people no where near the recruiting process itself.

Alabama is a perfect example. Saban didn't just vaguely hint, he outright said his qb was getting a 7 figure deal. And it was reported.

But, back to the OP, the anonymous survey has coaches mentioning Memphis/FedEx by name (and with negative implications), but nothing about Alabama. Same could be true for UCLA or Kentucky in basketball. Again, no mention of them.

So it's not that "Memphis can't keep their mouths shut". It's a different standard.

Saban’s QB was already committed when he got the NIL so Saban had every right to say what kind of NIL deal he got - it actually helps recruiting (not that Alabama needs help).

The fundamental difference is timing. People were implying an NIL FedEx deal was the reason Penny pulled in a big class and they were implying a) that Penny used FedEx NIL $ to win the kids over (not true and a recruiting violation) and b) that $ was the sole reason for the recruits deciding on Memphis.

In short it was a smear campaign.

Ah ok. Then maybe Hercy Miller fits the bill? An individual that's not part of a top 5 recruiting class. Admittedly as someone that supported NIL I looked for what others were getting outside of Memphis.

I don't know if it was meant to be a smear campaign, but it was false. This article is simply one more example of the original media report being falsely perpetuated.

The original report was put out by Joe Tipton, the guy who does graphics for commitment announcements, who recently got a reporting job. Somebody at FedEx refuted his story, and he deleted that part, but didn't really issue a retraction, iirc.

Yeah, funny how stuff like that sticks around but they were asking coaches who probably just read the headline.

So you don't see the difference of Saban talking about a kid who has been on his roster for 6 months and talking about a player who isn't even committed.

Memphis boosters can brag all they want after. Not before. That is where the big mouths hurt us
