I am not comparing anything to last year. This is where we are and we can't stop a nose bleed.

Nice to see a UB FG chip shot missed. Flashes with the 3 point lead, the ball and about 9 minutes left

I guess the coaches listened. [/b]

(10-09-2021 03:22 PM)anti-zip Wrote:  My hope for today is that we open up the passing game. Lewis has always liked to run the ball a lot, but this has been his most lopsided team. Right now we're averaging 50.2 rushes per game vs. 26.6 passes per game. That's the highest number of rushing attempts per game in the Lewis era and the lowest number of passing attempts. We're also averaging our lowest passing yards per game since he took over (188.2). Obviously, you'd assume that this will start to change now that we're done with the money games but that trend continued last week with 56 rushing attempts to 28 passes against BG. I really think we need get a more balanced ratio to realize our potential. It really doesn't make a lot of sense that we're not throwing more, considering Crum should be one of the top QB's in the MAC. Not to mention we really only lost one receiver from last year, and we brought in a couple receivers with high major experience.

My fear is that this trend is a reflection of the coaching staff feeling we don't have the skill at the receiver position to rely on it. 5 games into the season we only have 3 players with more than 3 receptions. Normally Lewis teams spread it around a lot more than that. Guys like Poke and Vance who were big parts of the passing game last year have seemingly disappeared and we haven't really seen anyone taking a step forward. Williams, Wooden and Floriea were some names I was watching for someone who might take a step forward this year, and so far none have done much of anything. Then there's the Syracuse TE Hackett who has 1 catch for 5 yards. I'm really hoping we start seeing us throw it a little more and some of these guys stepping up. Otherwise I think we're in for a disappointing second half of the season.

RE: Week 6: Buffalo
Not much defense in college football these days, or at any level for that matter. Almost 1200 yards between the two teams. Same with Oklahoma-Texas in their 55-48 track meet. Not really sure of all the reasons. I know that for decades most rule changes favored the offense, but other than that I have no idea.

Anti-Zip, and the Maryland game, too. And, A&M dropped two since the KSU game, indicating that their preseason talk about being a potential SEC winner was, in fact, just hype. It will be interesting to see what they can do against Bama. Iowa has been solid, but we'll have to see what they do against Penn St. today. VMI has been winning some.

Iowa might be the #1 team come tomorrow after A&M takes down Bama.

Yeah, I think Georgia will have something to say about that. But no worries we play them and Oklahoma next year.

Iowa has the better resume #17 Indiana, #9 Iowa State, Kent State, Colorado State, #4 Penn State. Compared to UAB, South Carolina, Vanderbilt, #8 Arkansas, #18 Auburn.

RE: Week 6: Buffalo
I mentioned earlier that there doesn't to be much defense in college football anymore. I did some checking. Oddly, I couldn't find stats for 2020. The first season in which football was essentially what we now know as football was 1913. So, scoring took off up until the peak of 66.6 total points in 1918. I imagine that it took a while for defenses to adjust. While scoring changes is not a straight line, having many peaks and valleys, scoring trended downward to a low of 31.7 points in 1965. Then the trend has been upward again ever since to 57.8 in 2019. That was the 2nd highest total in modern football, second only to 1918. As I mentioned before, I know that most rule changes over the last several decades have favored the offense, but beyond that I have no idea what else may be contributed to all the scoring and massive accumulation of yardage.

With the New AD in, it will be interesting to see how the schedules fall. Toledo jsut scheduled home and home with App State so a new game could come out at anytime.

Ideally I would like to see a way to balance a way of money games and be competitive games. Heck I am alright with 3 P5 games as long as lower tier games. Still got $1.5 million from Maryland. I understand it can be hit and miss but even playing something like Vandy, Purdue, Duke sounds nice.

If I had to guess, Randale Richmond will find a way to go One top p5 team, one lower p5, one g5 and one FCS

Next year is already booked with 3 P5 games, but 2023 and 2024 only have Arkansas and Penn State at this point.

Weird day for the defense. Shut them out in the 1st and 4th, 10 in the 2nd. Seems pretty solid... Oh, but there was that 28 spot in the 3rd. They made some big plays when it mattered though.

On offense, great to see them airing it out and getting Poke involved. Cephas had a monster game.

Surprisingly, that was the first 400+ yard passing day of Crum's career. Hope we see a few more this year.

The voters don’t use that level of examination. They basically rank everyone the same way, week after week, and only change it by moving down those that loss a game. Their only decision is really how far to move them down.

I agree. The voters seem to cement their ideas early on and then only tweak teams up a bit if teams ahead of them lose. That is why a loss very early in the season doesn't "count" as much, as the voters' haven't yet made up their minds. I expect Georgia to be #1. I look for Iowa to go unbeaten in the regular season and move up to #2. Georgia should win out and stay #1. Iowa and Ohio State should be in the Big10 championship game, and Georgia and Alabama in the SEC. At least that is what I expect. I don't really care that much. I'm more interested in how Kent State does.

Yes, I was hoping some strong showings early especially in the bodybag/payday games would drive his draft stick up but that didn’t happen. But hopefully it’s not too late to get some interest going with a strong finish to the season.

Yeah, I think they should do a preseason poll and then not do another poll until 6 weeks into the season so that voters reassess everything. But the polls are pretty much meaningless, just fun fodder for discussion.

Yeah but Iowa only won that game because Penn Sts. second string QB played the whole second half and was AWFUL!!! Of course the voters might ignore that.
