I guess this somehow makes sense to you, but you are the only one it makes sense to.

Sarcasm … I don’t know if RS is the man but the sky is not falling for me yet. I have been going to Memphis games since Williamson. I have seen a lot of bad beats and said numerous times I will never go back. We are fans, we don’t know what goes on at practice or what was told to players but there are a lot of Madden’s all pro players on this board that criticize every move. I guarantee none has ever coached ball pass pee wee.

We had two wildly successful hires using headhunters, and then for some reason decided to scrap the process that had been working to elevate a defensive assistant who had not presided over a very successful defense. My biggest worry with Silverfield was always not that he’d be a failure, but that he’d be just good enough to avoid getting fired, but not good enough to elevate the program and get hired away at a time where we can’t afford to be mediocre.

There was many years I wished we were mediocre.lol but I understand where you coming from. We got lucky with the two previous hires but they could have been just as bad as porter. Jury is still out for me on RS but we have a QB that doesn’t check off like the previous QB and has to go with the play called bc he doesn’t (IMO) see what the defense is showing him. In time he will and he will make any coach look better. Defense….we need help in all aspects. Start with the concept but mainly arm tackling and seeing the ball..
You can’t win any games if you lose the turnover battle

Huh? Respectfully I have to disagree 10000000% freeze and Memphis make so much sense it’s not even worth debating if the time is right.

I mean, I don’t like Freeze, and I actually doubt the timing would ever be right, but it would be hard to argue with it if it did happen.

Did we get lucky or did we have a process for identifying candidates that could succeed and then followed up with giving them the tools to do it?

One minor fix: Silverfield was an offensive assistant (OL coach and Running Game coach) and assistant head coach before being tapped. And so was part of a very successful offense. He has been head coach for 17 games, 2 being bowl games. 11-6 so far. And now we’re kind of rebuilding some things but I think my main gripe about what you said is talking about the possibility of mediocrity yet you don’t even remember where the coach came from and was a part of.

My bad, offensive line coach and running game coordinator.

LOL - I was about to point out this “minor” error myself!! Talk about raising hell about a coach with literally no clue as to their background and experience. It would be laughable if it weren’t so pathetic. Kinda more evidence of how much attention we should pay to most message board posters - myself included. I do believe I hold myself to a somewhat higher level of knowledge than Briskbas. That dude is on Venus!!

I see what you’re saying but u can say that about a lot of coaches in recent memory…most fans care about wins but a g5 school should care about them more during realignment…jmo

I think so too.

Don't really want him to be our HC either though.

If you look at the names that moved, we would have possibly been in on some of them, or maybe we could have grabbed someone else. Who would have made us happy that might have taken the job?

P5
Lane Kiffin
Willie Taggart
Sam Pittman
Jeff Hafley
Mike Leach
Nick Rolovich
Dave Aranda
Mel Tucker
Karl Dorrell
Greg Schiano
Eli Drinkwitz

Non P5
Jeff Scott
Jeff Traylor
Ricky Rahne
Shawn Clark
Marcus Arroyo
Kalen DeBoer
Danny Gonzalez
Brady Hoke
Steve Addazio
Todd Graham
Eli Drinkwitz

Assume that we would have had to be first on coaches that ended up at P5 schools to get them, and even many of them don't seem like great hires.

The first two on the G5 list are coaches we MIGHT have had a shot at, but even that is a stretch. Traylor was at Texas, SMU and Arkansas, so his ties to Texas are deep. Scott would have been considered a very solid hire, but he is 2-12 at USF.

IMO, the issues are across the board, not limited to Silverfield.

- Johns doesn't seem to be a great play caller
- McIntyre seems old school to me, probably not a great recruiter, stubborn in his ways
- IMO, we don't have a single running back that is above average, and none with breakaway speed
- IMO, the younger wide receivers aren't stepping up yet
- It all centers around Henigan not being ready, and not being able to make up for it by being a dual threat.

Everyone crapping on Silverfield for not having experience is crazy. He had been in coaching for 15 years, and was mentored here by Norvell for 4 years before being given the job. It is easily arguable that none of the other hires would have been appreciably better than him on paper, and there were reasons why all of them wouldn't have been as good of a hire.

The bottom line, is that aside from Austin and Dykes, we don't have very good offensive players yet. The minute Gainwell, Henderson, Coxie, and Pollard got on the field, everyone knew that they were going to be fantastic players. Maybe there are players like Gibson on the roster; players that are going to have huge breakouts.

Obviously, all of it falls on the coach. He is responsible for the assistants, and to be recruiting at such a high level and not see not enough playmakers emerge on either side of the ball, is worrisome.
