We aren't conservative. We run the same offense that gets the lead and that gets us slowed/shut down. The past few games the other teams adjusted when we didn't and we couldn't do anything. This game we score three straight drives then have a fumble and a drive that starts with 1st and 2nd down runs and three incomplete passes in a row. Then add in the fact the uptempo when we aren't scoring is keeping the defense on the field longer has become another problem.

Defense staying on the field because they we giving up easy underneath passes all day.

Always allowing the offense to say in manageable situations...

2nd and Medium
3rd and Short

When your defense allows 17 play drives that is on them

That too. Blackman came in when we played A State and beat us with long throws. The D switched to allow those dink and dunk passes like you mention in that game and we've been sticking to that for better or worse ever since. And without looking back I don't think playing that way stopped Blackman either. It just made the drives longer.

Great post…. Sometimes I wonder if some people ever played football or coached

Hahaha…really? That’s the best you’ve got?

I played. I never coached. This team is terrible. Any player or coach can tell that.

We have talent. The coaches aren't maximizing that talent IMO.

NOT STOPPING PEOPLE IS THE ONLY REASON they are on the field too much---THE LITTLE DARLINGS NEED TO STOP SOMEONE

Both leads early in the game show us we usually have a good initial game plan, however other coaches are making in game adjustments and we are not.

Defense being on the field isn’t on the offense. I don’t get why people think that.

I would say the offense does have an impact on that. As I mentioned here we have some of the lowest time of possession numbers in the country. Thanks to us trying to be uptempo, with three-and-outs, other unsuccessful low play drives, and short drives from scoring, we've been increasing the opportunities for the defense to be on the field.

Lol you obviously watched a different game than I did. We got up 17-0 by being uptempo then took the foot off the gas. Defense plays too vanilla. Mostly with a 3 man front and soft zone in the back. We’ve been uptempo for the last 8 years and it’s worked. Why is it all of a sudden not working ?

Exactly… we never press & we always play off the receivers. When we do get “crazy” and blitz, then we send the LB’s & leave the middle of the field wide open. Extremely vanilla on defense.

You’ll see some pressing in about 22 days.

Agreed. its silly for Silverfied to think that jonese play calling isnt predictable. The play calling sucks. Why throw the ball to calvin when he is double covered. Throw it to someone else. Dumb coaches.

It is working the stupid jerks wont keep running it and the defense is vanilla. No pressure on the QB at all.

Oh we are definitely watching the same game, just with different interpretations. We didn't take our foot off the gas. We never do. We can do something as simple as look at the play-by-play of our games. We'll see the times of drives and plays called leading up to building a lead and after the lead are usually very similar. In fact our longest possession against Temple was our very first drive. You will see that we very rarely have long drives no matter what what the game is at. Maybe I need a better understanding of how you are defining taking the foot off the pedal. I mentioned in my first post here what I think people are seeing as being conservative.

I agree about the defense. But it could be argued our offense is as much if not more generic and predictable than our defense and a major part of why it's not working all of a sudden as you asked.

Also go back to the Offense thread I just linked to see other reasons why Johns offense is not working compared to the past.

Call it whatever you want, but it's not a winning formula.

When you play a soft zone and force 5 yard easy passes all day you will lose the number of plays battle. TOP means much less than number of plays...Wouldn't you rather have your defense play against 60 in 30 minutes opposed to 75 plays in 25 minutes.

3 and outs using 40 seconds of the clock or 20 seconds of the clock is a 1 minute difference...Not much in the grand scheme of things.

What if our defense is averaging 93 plays per game in 35:52? 03-lmfao 03-puke

I'm assuming that will come down once Temple is factored in.

EDIT: Those numbers were taken from Teamrankings.com. NCAA.com seems to be 35:30 and 83.8, but they only give totals that seem to be rounded. Either way still ugly.

THE REASON THE D IS ON THE FIELD SO LONG IS WE CANT STOP ANYBODY

OK how bout we score on the first play of every possession ---and when the defense gets on the field they force a 3 and out or even a punt after 1 FD

BETTER YET RUIN SILVERFIELD instruct his players whatever you do don't score quickly --we want to drive the ball down the field and FUMBLE or maybe take a knee at the 10 so we don't score quickly

It’s the old school ‘bend, but don’t break’ philosophy. Run a base defense and keep everything in front of you. We don’t have the level of talent needed to run that in today’s game. In my opinion, a high risk, high reward philosophy(ala Joe Lee Dunn) would suit the Tigers better. Exchange a few big plays for opportunities for sacks, TFLs, and turnovers. I’ll take a few big play TDs over a few 12+ play TDs all day long. The long drives sap your energy.

On offense, I wonder if the 1st 15-20 plays are scripted(usually involves input from the entire Offensive staff)and that’s why they start out gang busters. However, when Coach John’s is left to his own devices, things slow down and stagnate.

So you are saying that you don't want us to score a TD on the first play of every possession

You're asking me to want something that won't happen.

T.O.P in games

Memphis 31:15 Nicholls 28:45
Memphis 24:04 Arkansas State 35:56
Memphis 19:27 Mississippi State 40:33
Memphis 24:18 Texas-San Antonio 35:42
Memphis 24:33 Temple 35:27

However, when Coach John’s is left to his own devices, things slow down and become predictable.

Not running the ball more is part of that problem. We have the horses. Let them run.

Defense being on the field isn’t on the offense. I don’t get why people think that.

It's not just that, it's the game within the game that the offense struggles. When we played Mississippi State, our defense was on the field for about 3-4 minutes of game time when Sanchez Blake scored the touchdown off the fumble. After that, our defense was on the field for another 6-7 minutes of game time due to MS State's second drive. Despite scoring the touchdown, we can agreed on that our defense was on the field for roughly 13 minutes of game time before the offense takes a snap. When the offense got the ball, it was a 3 and out, and our defense (Which is already gassed) is back on the field.

What kills our defense is that our offense plays too fast for them to recover in certain situations. A 6-7 minute drive on offense is not in Memphis' DNA. What adds salt into the wound is when there are no points or a 3 and out that takes a minute off the clock. I don't have a problem with our offense playing fast, but a 6-7 minute drive is a win for our defense, even if our offense doesn't come up with points.
