Several years ago the Big 12 did a site survey per our request. The big takeaway was as many of our sports teams as possible needed to be on campus. Like a village setting. That is why you see what is happening on south campus now. Maybe, just maybe, this is showing a commitment to all of our sports teams and the naming rights of the SBMS is exactly what is needed to get the ole girl up to B12 standards and sets the tone for the future. Our Ath. Dept. is $20 mill in the hole, not $12 like was reported, or so I hear. No way we are in a position to build an OCS right now unless the state builds it. Not happening right now.

Right, let's not let the perfect get in the way of the good. The stadium has to become big 12 ready by next round of expansion or we have only ourselves to blame. That becomes all too obvious when you look around and what other candidate programs are doing. Boise, USF, San Diego State are all scrambling to upgrade their stadiums. This may very well be the last train out of c-usa 4.0.

If that's actually true, that the money is actually already there, then why only silence thus far? With Texas and Oklahoma leaving the Big 12 soon you think the wheels would be at least turning on an on-campus stadium --- why the sitting around? Legislation on state funds pending? Businesses investing? Thus far all we're hearing are plans to get the Liberty Bowl ready. All the movement is on one front and none on the other --- it's not like there isn't a clock ticking.

Let me take you back to before we had the Grizzlies...only a small subset of people knew we were after a NBA team, exceptionally small - what was more exciting is that there were "two" teams planning to come here - one was the one we got the other was headed up by Bill Laurie and a group with Dick Hackett and Gene Bartow representing them locally. All at the same time - there was going to be a new basketball arena at that time and no one knew it in this city. Very few even know we had our choice of teams at that time.

It all starts w the President and the Board and goes from there.

Lots of politics behind the scenes right now w the Pres.

Sure, if the "right people" are interested in an on-campus stadium it will get done. Of course that's always been the case with any project. But so far it's just a lot of "Ifs." Maybe that will change and I'd be totally on board. Right now it's only words and hopes. And, with the looming deadline to actually do something, those don't build on-campus stadiums.

What's the deal with International Paper? They are not very visible or involved in the community. Probably they are behind the scenes but you don't hear their name much. Don't get me wrong, Memphis is lucky to have them but it would be great if they were more visible. I mean they are a big time global corporate entity, I would love to see them step up locally.

Temple plays in a sweet stadium. I’m shocked the ACC or Big 12 wouldn’t be interested in a team that plays in a top 10 market and in such a wonderful, big league facility.

Anyway, jump to 4:50. The off-campus stadium isn't the problem apparently. It seems that the problem with the stadium is outdated amenities -- bathrooms, concession stands, etc. They talk about a potential naming rights deal to fund the updates.

At the beginning of the video they talk about Boise States stadium. It's going to need an addition 15,000 seats.





So this kind of sums up the naming deal...
