Nobody from the "Alliance". Could happen.....

This is my preference. Surest way to get 12 teams on a 6+6 model done asap

How about Notre Dame and Ohio State? By rule they must be shoehorned into the CFP regardless of performance.

I bet when the first CFP poll comes out Cincinnati is no higher than 8th

Assuming they keep winning of course, Cincy's positioning will IMO depend heavily on how Notre Dame does going forward.

Some people - not talking about you personally here - think Cincy is getting disrespected. But look at the polls. Right now, they are #5 AP, ranked behind four 5-0 P5 teams.

But, they are also ranked ahead of five 5-0 P5 teams - Oklahoma, Michigan, Michigan State, Wake Forest and Kentucky. Two of those are elite blue bloods, and a third is a team that has made the CFP playoffs. They are also well ahead of 5-0 BYU, Coastal Carolina and SMU. All of these teams have one more win than Cincy.

I mean, why is Cincy #5 while Kentucky is #16? I would say Kentucky's resume is as good as Cincy's.

Yeah, the schedule will come into scrutiny, as it always does. Eyes will lock on the Irish, too. Cincy’s future success follows how the Irish finish out, and even that’s not fair given if the ACC really is this weak this year, and the PAC is done at this point, so ND’s schedule isn’t as solid. Honestly, assuming both Cincy and ND win out, it gives the committee to hose both of them, imo.

The polling component always gets me, though, and you can see how it is playing out for the SEC, but especially the Big Ten. Four teams from the Big Ten East in the top 11. I mean, I guess we’re forced to believe one of those teams, and/or Iowa just must be one of the best teams in the country, just because? Weren’t two of those teams unrated at the start of the year? I wish Cincy or any non-major could skyrocket like that.

Edited to add that Kentucky and Oklahoma State are both gaining ground to take up where Georgia or Oklahoma could fall/stop. Or, overrate the two to boost their quality should UGA and OU respectively flatten them. As that is totally the case now with B1G East.

No full playoff of all conference champs, then go back to old bowl system. This 4 team playoff is a joke.

If I had to pick today, those would be my four anyway (although I'll listen to an argument for Penn State/Iowa winner instead of OU).

Good points here, but we could flip this a bit as well: Why is Cincy ranked ahead of teams like Kentucky and Oklahoma State? Those teams have resumes that are as good as Cincy's and they have one more win. But Cincy is benefitting from their performance last year, which put them in the pre-season top 10 this year, giving them a big head start, so to speak. But people who want to see a G5 in the playoff seem to just take that bias for granted and assume it is right and proper.

One problem I have in situations like this is that supporters of teams like Cincy, and the top G5 team generally, always focus on the perceived injustice of what is happening above them, but they take for granted that they belong ahead of teams below them. E.g., last year, there was a lot of gnashing of teeth about how Cincy was hitting a "glass ceiling" in the CFP and could not crack the top 4. But on the other hand, regarding the NY6 spot, Cincy was always well ahead of Coastal Carolina in the polls and CFP, despite Coastal having an arguably better resume than Cincy. But they didn't want to talk about that. They wanted to talk about why was a one-loss Texas AM or whoever ranked ahead of them.

If Cincy wins out they deserve a shot at the top 4.

I will cheer for them to get a shot.

I love the four-team playoff. What's not to like about getting to see great matchups among four of the very best teams?

I mean, think about 2018, when Notre Dame, Alabama and Clemson were all unbeaten. If this was 1996, at most we would have gotten two of those teams, probably ND and Alabama, playing in a bowl game. But thanks to the CFP, we got two matchups - ND vs Clemson and Alabama vs Clemson.

That's much better, IMO.

Yup, 8 sounds about what the selection committee will be instructed to do

I don’t disagree with the spirit of this, but, the bias is applied across all non-majors because you saw some sort of pecking order come out of it especially last year. Not just how Cincy couldn’t climb, but how Coastal needed to come from off the board and then slowly rise, too. I don’t disagree that a deck was stacked toward Cincy/AAC and that you saw it held against Coastal (and also SJSU?). It’s all wrong.

The bigger gripe should be toward how Iowa State climbed over so many others to get into position to get a playoff spot if it came to it, or how much help Ohio State got from everyone to keep a place, or how Oregon was bad, but good enough to grab a ranking so that you didn’t have an unranked AQ in the NY6. That’s the junk I think we’re seeing even now with Kentucky, OSU, and basically eveyone but Indiana, Rutgers, and Maryland in the Big Ten East.

But, I don’t disagree with there being a bias again. I think Coastal is a stud this year. Maybe better than last year. Both Cincy and Coastal could win out, and only Cincy will probably get the NY6 spot at best. Coastal’s hosed until there’s the establishment of top ranked AQ conference champs…but, the ceilings will still be in place for Sun Belt versus AAC or MWC heads up.

Iowa St. deserved their spot. There is also a bias against no name P5s like Iowa St. and Kentucky.

As much as it sucks there is a glass ceiling at #5 for teams outside the P5.

I am however hopeful that Cincinnati’s pending move from the great unwashed to the chosen few will help the Bearcats garner enough support to make the Top 4.

They had three losses, one to Louisiana who had just one loss and won their Sun Belt Conference division.

Until there is a format decided upon for pay for play and there is a known quantity of schools participating in it, and until we know who may unionize and who, if any may not, and until the current relationship, or lack thereof, with the NCAA is decided and we know if we have a breakaway upper tier or not, all of the hand wringing and wishful hopes for an expanded playoff is nothing more than click bait. You can't sign a contract for extended playoffs until there are clear decisions on the other matters. It's a nice distraction but the cart is still being placed before the horse. This will be a much easier issue to handle when we know where everyone stands and what business formats are, or are not, in place.

FWIW, I was mystified by how high Iowa State was ranked in the waning weeks of last year as well. That was a head-scratcher to me and IIRC I commented on it.

What shut me up was that they did go out and win the Fiesta Bowl over the PAC champ. Albeit a PAC champ that was like 3-2 or something.

That shouldn't have shut me up, because performance in a game doesn't mean you merited being in that game to begin with. But it did.

It was a screwy, virus year.

Cincy and BYU gonna get snubbed because they’re allergic to an 8 team playoff system.

I hate to say it, but I think for Cinci to have a shot. OU needs a loss. Then hope between Iowa, PSU and OSU, two of these teams have 2 losses.

Otherwise I think it will be 2 SEC and 2 B10 teams.

My guess, the compromise will be 10 teams with top two teams receiving byes. Personally, I think 10 is still too many but I doubt 8 will happen. I rather CCG go away, then take the ten best teams. Not like conference champion means anything any more. If there is an upset, there is no reward.
