FIU: Shula Bowl! That's right it's rivalry week which means that it's... week 5?? I always think that early rivalry week games are dumb and this is no exception. FIU actually doesn't look that bad this year and will surprise the Owls who've got their eyes on another prize (a different conference)

La Tech: In a complete reversal of fortunes La Tech wins this one on a 50 yard flea flicker as time expires. Bulldog fans everywhere praise whatever deity suits their fancy at that particular moment.

UTSA: The battle of the four letter acronyms features a 4-0 and an 0-4 team. Roadrunners roll as an injured Rebels runs out of luck.

Rice: Rice is not doing great no, but they also didn't play Alabama last week and so are probably less banged up. This matchup is a coin toss for me.

UAB: The Blazers open up Protective Stadium in style by lighting up the Flames. No matter what happens this game is gonna be a barn-burner.

Middle Tennessee: After an emotional loss at Appalachian State, Marshall forgets that football teams actually still play in C-USA, and Empty Sue finally gets a dub. The Blue Raiders will be on their way to another 6-6 season much to Stockstill's, and I have to assume the fanbases, delight.

#17 Michigan St.: The Hilltoppers pass all over the Spartans but they can't come up Big for this win.

Old Dominion: 2000 Miles of Mild Discontent!!!! That's right it's rivalry week which means that it's... week 5?? I always think that early rivalry week games are dumb and this is no exception. Monarchs take the momentum of their second half against Buffalo and go rolling in their 3rd trip to El Paso in the past four games of the series (thank you C-USA scheduling office!). Afterwards we'll find a cantina to drink and dance in.

For a rivalry, FIU hasn't been winning enough, so the game was moved earlier in the season, this way more important games are played later.

FAU isn’t a rival. I get the distance but there isn’t much else there. We don’t really have a rival. I don’t get why they keep trying to force feed this. And it’s not about us seemingly never winning this game it’s just ehh whatever

We enjoy kicking your asX. So keep being indifferent and we will just rip your helmet off the side of the trophy every year.

Our “fanbase” is indifferent to just about everything. Game is played on the field though and I’m still hoping for a win. Just saying it’s no different than beating Marshall or WKU.

Yeah i am sure some of it is based on our 2nd half performance display vs UB but we are still very young and are playing at UTEP who managed to win vs two FBS teams so advantage UTEP in my book.

It's tough to be a rivalry when you never win and are in essence irrelevant.

If I were a betting person, I would love La Tech getting 21 points at NC State.

Not sure if they irrelevant but one thing for sure is that FIU is very arrogant. They have not done anything but feel above everybody.
We will see how the game goes.

Illinois is REALLY bad. If the Charlotte that beat Duke shows up, there's a chance.

Florida Int'l 1-3 (0-0) @ Florida Atl. 2-2 (0-0) 3:30PM NoTV FAU -10.5
FAU wins the battle of F_U's

La Tech 2-2 (1-0) @ #23 NCST 3-1 (1-0) 6:00PM ACCNX/ESPN+ NCST -21.0
LaTech is good. Will it be enough?

UNLV 0-4 (0-1) @ UTSA 4-0 (1-0) 6:00PM ESPN+ UTSA -21.0
UTSA keeps rolling along

Southern Miss 1-3 (0-0) @ Rice 1-3 (0-0) 6:30PM ESPN3 Rice -2.5
Both teams are bad. I'm only choosing Rice because they're the home team....granted USM may have more fans in the stands.

Liberty 3-1 (x-x) @ UAB 3-1 (1-0) 7:00PM CBSSN UAB -1.5
UAB packs the house and sends Liberty back to Virginia to pray.

Marshall 2-2 (0-0) @ Middle Tennessee 1-3 (0-2) 7:00PM NoTV MU -10.0
Given Marshall got beat by a perennially bad ECU, they may still be better than MTSU

WKU 1-2 (0-0) @ #17 Michigan St. 4-0 (2-0) 7:30PM BTN Sparty -10.5
Homer pick, of course, but WKU is legit.

Old Dominion 1-3 (0-2) @ UTEP 3-1 (0-0) 9:00PM ESPN+ UTEP -4.5
ODU brings UTEP back down to reality.

OK..before ya'll bash my picks, just know that I'm positive I have no chance to win this Lines in the Sand competition so I might as well dream a little. 04-cheers04-cheers

Illinois is not as bad as you think. Despite being 1-4, they've arguably had just one bad game.

- Beat 2-3 Nebraska 30-22 (by more than #6 OU and #17 Michigan State did)
- Lost to 4-0 UTSA 37-30
- Lost to 2-2 Virginia 42-14 (only bad loss)
- Lost to 4-0 Maryland 20-17
- Lost to 3-1 Purdue 13-9 (Purdue's only loss is 27-13 at #9 Notre Dame)

They lost three close games to quality teams, and were leading in the 4th quarter in their losses to Maryland and Purdue. UTSA and Virginia are the only teams who led the entire game against them.

Charlotte 3-1 (1-0) @ Illinois 1-4 (1-2) NOON BTN Illinois -11.0
MY LINE: Charlotte 27-23 Charlotte is on a uptick... Even if Charlotte is on the road, I think this game will be close.

Florida Int'l 1-3 (0-0) @ Florida Atl. 2-2 (0-0) 3:30PM NoTV FAU -10.5
MY LINE: FIU 30-24 Not sure if I used the reverse reverse psychology on my FAU picks here or not LOL.

La Tech 2-2 (1-0) @ #23 NCST 3-1 (1-0) 6:00PM ACCNX/ESPN+ NCST -21.0
MY LINE: NCSU 31-23 I'm debating how much the OT Clemson win by BCSU has them overlooking a DECENT La Tech team. I think LT can get them if they aren't dialed in.

UNLV 0-4 (0-1) @ UTSA 4-0 (1-0) 6:00PM ESPN+ UTSA -21.0
MY LINE: UTSA 35-23 I mean UNLV did have some offensive success against Fresno St last week but otherwise against FBS competition they have been anemic...but I am not quite sold UTSA can blow them out.

Southern Miss 1-3 (0-0) @ Rice 1-3 (0-0) 6:30PM ESPN3 Rice -2.5
MY LINE: USM 31-27 The way this season is going for both, this is the least sexiest matchup of the year so far LOL.

Liberty 3-1 (x-x) @ UAB 3-1 (1-0) 7:00PM CBSSN UAB -1.5
MY LINE: UAB 33-23 I feel better about UAB getting this done than I am the other way.

Marshall 2-2 (0-0) @ Middle Tennessee 1-3 (0-2) 7:00PM NoTV MU -10.0
MY LINE: Marshall 35-20 I think Marshall should win this in good fashion.

WKU 1-2 (0-0) @ #17 Michigan St. 4-0 (2-0) 7:30PM BTN Sparty -10.5
MY LINE: Mich St 31-21 Michigan State should be able to get this done.

Old Dominion 1-3 (0-2) @ UTEP 3-1 (0-0) 9:00PM ESPN+ UTEP -4.5
MY LINE: UTEP 37-30 While I think ODU can keep it close because it being UTEP, UTEP has looked better so far this season.

IDLE: North Texas

RE: *****CUSA Lines In The Sand - Week 5 Pick 'Em*****
Charlotte. I didn’t like that Georgia state loss, but with their performance vs AU, I’ll cut you some slack. Didn’t remember y’all have Foster and Shaw. Not bad pieces in the back field.
FAU. I had trouble with this one. Assuming Air Force was really good?
NC State. You know, I considered La Tech based on the MSU game, NC State is going to be riding a high from the Clemson game. Expect them to play with confidence and now eyes on the playoff.
UTSA. UNLV gave Fresno somewhat of a scare. Handle your business early.
Rice. Trouble with this one as well. Based on your performance early at Ark.
Liberty. Seeing how many sacks Liberty has given up, I wanted to take my Blazers, but I’ve had this as a loss even in preseason. We don’t have the offensive fire power to keep up. Defense can’t maintain composure in an atmosphere like we’ll have. Big event usually equals big disappointment for UAB. Pessimism is in Blazer fans DNA.
Marshall. Don’t spank them too bad or for too long. Someone might call child protective services.
Michigan state. Can WKU get stops, slow down tempo, win TOP, and score efficiently? This isn’t a solid pick from my perspective.
UTEP. Play inspired UTEP, you’re at home and 3-1. Bowl eligibility is great, but 7 wins likely confirms an invite. I don’t know where you’ll find 4 more wins on the rest of your schedule. So get your 4th vs ODU. That ODU performance vs Buffalo, had me hesitant on this pick.

My Week 5 Picks
.
Saturday, October 2nd, 2021

Charlotte 3-1 (1-0) @ Illinois 1-4 (1-2) - Charlotte is the 11 point dawg in Champaign this weekend as expected. The Fighting Illini are on a 4 game losing skid since beating Nebraska in week 0. Look for Illinois to get back in the win column but it would be no shocker if the 49ers pull this one out. Take Charlotte and the point but give me Illinois at home. Illinois 27 Charlotte 23

Florida Int'l 1-3 (0-0) @ Florida Atl. 2-2 (0-0) - It is the annual Shula Bowl and this one is in Boca Raton but I would pick the Owls even if in University Park. Disappointed by the Owls performance at Colorado Springs and the Panthers performed better than expected at CMU. FAU 31 FIU 21

La Tech 2-2 (1-0) @ #23 NCST 3-1 (1-0) - The Wolfpack is riding high now, and rightfully so, but they need to stay focused on the Bulldogs from Ruston. La Tech is coming off a W but to hapless North Texas so I am leery of getting too excited about the Bulldogs chances. La Tech covers but N C State wins this one in Raleigh. N C State 42 La Tech 31

UNLV 0-4 (0-1) @ UTSA 4-0 (1-0) - I know this game is on the home turf in San Antonio against the 0-4 Rebels but they did put a little fear in the Bulldogs of Fresno State. Look for UNLV to cover and UTSA to win. UTSA 35 UNLV 24

Southern Miss 1-3 (0-0) @ Rice 1-3 (0-0) - All I want to know is how bad is Grambling? What appear to be two CUSA lightweights square off this weekend in Houston. This could go either way but give me the home team in a close one. Rice 31 USM 28

Liberty 3-1 (x-x) @ UAB 3-1 (1-0) - The Flames have played a relatively soft schedule so far with Syracuse being their only decent opponent and the Orange hung a W on them. UAB has looked impressive at times and others not. This game being in Birmingham tells me to take the homestanding Blazers.

Marshall 2-2 (0-0) @ Middle Tennessee 1-3 (0-2) - Marshall started out once again with high hopes but then some Pirates stole their momentum but despite losing at Boone it was a game they could've easily won. Rick Stockstill needs his 6 wins to keep this contract alive and Marshall was not one he had checked off so a W would be huge in Murfreesboro but I think the Thundering Herd win rather comfortably. Marshall 42 MTSU 27

WKU 1-2 (0-0) @ #17 Michigan St. 4-0 (2-0) - A lot of Sparty fans look at WKU at 1-2 as an easy win considering they are 4-0 coming off a W over Nebraska and being ranked then wonder what was wrong with Indiana. If the Toppers can get the ball enough and the weather is not too bad WKU could very likely win this game in East Lansing if they don't get behind too much and turn the ball over. Look for the Toppers to cover but the Spartans to pull out a tough home W. Michigan State 48 WKU 45.

Old Dominion 1-3 (0-2) @ UTEP 3-1 (0-0) - UTEP is 3-1? wow that has been quite a while I'm sure. ODU was dead in the water against Buffalo but then came to life and scared the heck out of the Bulls. Leaning towards the Miners since in El Paso but ODU will make this interesting. UTEP 31 ODU 27
