UAB purchasing the Cooper Green Deck from Jefferson County
The deck across 14th Street from Bartow Arena will be demolished for re-devlopment.

Quote:The location of the land adjacent to the UAB campus at 14th Street South and Sixth Avenue South makes it ripe for redevelopment into any of several projects that would improve the overall campus, UAB said in documents detailing the deal.
The deal would bring about two more acres under the UAB umbrella, including a parking deck that it plans to demolish to make room for redevelopment.

My old work building (RUST Building) is going to be brought down sometime next fall probably replaced by some kind of research building like Shelby next to it.

I had one class in the Rust Building - Population Genetics. Murray Rust was a hospice volunteer in Naples, FL and sat with my father several hours a week in '86. He enjoyed talking about the UAB campus with me.

That deck is a very nice perk for basketball booster gameday parking and provides great access to the Champion Club and Green and Gold room. Curious to see what the plan is for relocation of booster parking.

No idea, but the deck is definitely coming down. It already has construction fencing surrounding it.

What good does less parking do for any of us? This is getting dumb.

A single use parking deck is not the best and highest use of that land.

UAB probably has more parking today than it ever has, it's just not in the middle of campus. Expecting being able to drive to literally the middle of campus and park without needing to walk or ride a bus (other than to hospital patient parking) is completely unrealistic and not how any campus in the US is going

If UAB was a rural university it would be. Land is a major premium on the southside, especially near campus. I don’t find it dumb in the least. Comes with the territory of being an “urban research university.”

Yep. It's silly for anyone coming to an urban campus to expect to park next to the front door of any building.

Most buildings in Birmingham must furnish an appropriate number of parking places for zoning/building permits. UAB has such an agreement with the city. If we wish to tire down a parking deck for another developement the spaces will have to be replaced.

Its funny but I can remember the preliminary plan for new buildings would have a planned revision after the parking spaces required were agreed upon., For example a planned office floor required more parking spaces than an animal lab.

...they might tear down the old Coop and build a more 'central' deck, which would make sense. It does not emphatically note that in the article, but it DOES say the current building is too expensive to maintain... so I figure it will have a date with the wrecking ball soon - or I guess after the new place is completed.

...UAB is also starting to clear land for the new hospital in McCalla - just east of Exit 1 on the "McAdory H.S." side of 459. Moving operations (beds) from the old Caraway (now UAB West) building up on Bessemer Super Highway (or U.S. Hwy 11).

The deck being torn down is for Cooper Green which is mostly shut down now anyway (it's only used as a health clinic, it's no longer operating as a hospital)

UAB has been on a tear over the past 10 years or so moving parking from the inside of the campus to the periphery. Lots of buildings have been built on old parking lots and without new parking adjacent to them

...yeah I think the parking spaces requirement has become a pretty 'fast and loose' issue with the boom in campus construction, in addition to the 'campusizing' (yeah that's a word) of the...well, campus - the green area, and I think there is something like that in the works between... well, the old physics/chemistry building westward to the old humanities building - one of those two streets might be 'greened over', IIRC... of course the Master Plan changes constantly, and that was from a good bit back, so... who knows.

As I said, it is dumb to tear down that deck because now they’ve renamed the lots and haven’t said which was this or that, and this is what it’ll now be known as. So, now Paw who would’ve had a shorter walk from what is now the All Conference lot will likely be walking up from behind the steam plant.

So, what was the green parking renamed to?

Check your emails. It’s the one from blazer boosters.

What makes me more curious is, we went up to Bartow to confirm where our seats were gonna be. We were told the seats, but doubt was left like they hadn’t been confirmed. I logged into our account and they still haven’t confirmed our season ticket purchase in the payment history. I guess, when we get our tickets in the mail over the next 2 weeks, we just get what we get.
