#2 on everyone's list only behind cindy.

I stated multiple times why we were not #2 on everybody's list only behind Cindy--and was demonized for it. I suggested BEFORE the 4 were chosen why we probably would be left out. Funny thing though- when we were left out --a week after I suggested the reason why we would be left out--Geoff Calkins suggested the same reason why we were left out

MEMPHIS MEMORIAL STADIUM is not the reason why we were not picked and will have no bearing one way or the other the next go round

A lack of O.C.S. is not the reason we were not chosen last time and will have no bearing one way or the other the next go round

I will say this if we do choose to build O.C.S. --it should not be a Mickey Mouse small stadium ala 40k. It better be 55k plus--because if we do get in a power 5 we will need the seats----people suggesting 40/45k are just plain wrong----why does MEMPHIS always sell itself short----and why should we ever make it hard for our fans to get tickets to the games----MORE SEATS MEANS MORE FANS AT GAMES

If the BIG12 add 2 more --I think we MIGHT/MAY have a shot----don't limit the number of fans that can go to the games

If we did make the P4-1/2 we would need more than 40K.

Memphis doesn't need that large of a capacity in a move up in conference. There are quite a few A5 teams at 50k and below.

That is true. Our 5-year average attendance according to College Football News was 37228.8 (#59). Would playing better competition bump up the average enough to justify a 55k+ stadium as mentioned in the OP? In the CFN article only 37 teams averaged around 55k and higher. There was a 4k gap between 38 and 37.

I’m think 50K would be nominal.

I agree that there were other reasons why we weren’t invited, but obviously our outdated facilities were brought up. It’s not coincidental that USF and us brought up this topic shortly after getting left out. I’d say it’s an issue, how committed are we to this? UCF, UH, and Cinci were committed. They knew they needed to build a new stadium or spend millions updating their current OCS. How many P5 teams play at a rented stadium at the fairgrounds?

Somethings can’t be fixed (nor should they), others can. We aren’t changing the demographics at the University, actually diversity can be a huge selling point these days. But we can improve on our really outdated facilities.

I’m not sure building an OCS will get us an invite. But it could at least be a great place to watch a game over the next 40-50 years. I hope we can pull it off.

50k would be my max. 45k would be my target and if need be designed to expand by 5k more.

I agree. We can’t think small. We have been reactive or lack of besides proactive.

Really? To who? Obviously not the b12. Who else matters?

Agreed. I want an OCS for several reasons, improving conference affiliation being only one. I would enjoy returning to campus regularly for games and "seeing" how my contributions are being used to improve my beloved university. When I was a kid growing up in Memphis, I attended a number of U of M football games with friends and relatives at the Liberty Bowl. But the first time I set foot on the U of M campus was after I was accepted as a student. I was damn impressed by the size and beauty of the U of M, and that was before many of the capital improvements we have today. The experience for young kids attending football games on the beautiful U of M campus can make a huge positive impression on them which I believe would translate to increased student enrollment and more alumni giving in the years ahead.

Even when the B-12 tells us an OCS is an essential criteria, you say no, SMH. The B-12 wants to see a financial commitment to the athletics program - we can't show that paying rent in a mislocated 56 year old municipal stadium that is too large for our fan base to be motivated to buy season tickets. Further the B-12 see the LBS as a tired, old stadium - and they know, one of their teams comes here every year. Down the road, if attendance against B-12 opponents picks up, the OCS can expanded because the demand for seats will pay for it. But we will likely never get that chance because the B-12 has told us we need an OCS to be invited. Every school in the B-12 plays in an OCS. Every school invited from the AAC has an OCS. USF got the message, announced an OCS & already has a $50M commitment from private sources to kickoff their fund raising campaign. What more evidence do you need?

If I bet on a football game today based on gut feeling and win, it would mean I got lucky. It doesn’t mean I knew squat. I would have no problem admitting that.

This discussion is not solely based on getting into the Big12. That could be one of many benefits.

An extra 20,000 fans aren’t going to come out of the woodwork to see us play Texas Tech. I agree with Alanda. 45k MAX to start. Build up demand and sell more season tickets by eliminating the walk-up day-of-the-game mentality. Expand when/IF we know the demand is there. We don’t need loads of additional inventory until we’re sure we can sell it. Empty seats aren’t a good look. Kroger doesn’t keep gobs of useless inventory on hand just in case they have that rare snow-day sellout.

Yep, 45k with unfinished attic.

It’s sad that virtually all of Memphis alumni never step foot back on campus after graduation.

We would be the ONLY school in a P5 conference playing both major sports in rented, municipally owned facilities. Of course, it’s a tremendous factor in the U of M being consistently passed over.

What's really sad is the majority of alums never attend the football games or contribute a dime towards the improvement of their university. That's exactly why it took 10 years to build the IPF. It is what it is and it's why we will continue to play in the LB, which I'm fine with if we make some improvements.

It’s sad the majority of Memphis alumni never step foot back on campus after graduation.

What's really sad is the majority of alums never attend the football games or contribute a dime towards the improvement of their university. That's exactly why it took 10 years to build the IPF. It is what it is and it's why we will continue to play in the LB, which I'm fine with if we make some improvements.

I wouldn’t think the majority of most school’s alumni do. There aren’t any stadiums that big. Make it a campus event and perhaps more would attend. Get them back on campus and perhaps more would donate. They’d be able to see what their dollars are paying for. Games at a rented off-campus venue accomplish none of that. It’s nothing more than a detached place to go watch/play the game. Then everyone goes home.

Your keyword is 'perhaps more would attend'. I'm just not buying in that if we try to keep up with the Joneses and spend $250M, suddenly everyone will want to attend Tigers FB games. Keep winning will do more for enthusiasm than an OCS.

“Perhaps more” isn’t the same as “everybody”. Perhaps I should have omitted “Perhaps”.
