I stated multiple times why we were not #2 on everybody's list only behind Cindy--and was demonized for it. I suggested BEFORE the 4 were chosen why we probably would be left out. Funny thing though- when we were left out --a week after I suggested the reason why we would be left out--Geoff Calkins suggested the same reason why we were left out

MEMPHIS MEMORIAL STADIUM is not the reason why we were not picked and will have no bearing one way or the other the next go round

A lack of O.C.S. is not the reason we were not chosen last time and will have no bearing one way or the other the next go round

I will say this if we do choose to build O.C.S. --it should not be a Mickey Mouse small stadium ala 40k. It better be 55k plus--because if we do get in a power 5 we will need the seats----people suggesting 40/45k are just plain wrong----why does MEMPHIS always sell itself short----and why should we ever make it hard for our fans to get tickets to the games----MORE SEATS MEANS MORE FANS AT GAMES

If the BIG12 add 2 more --I think we MIGHT/MAY have a shot----don't limit the number of fans that can go to the games

Even when the B-12 tells us an OCS is an essential criteria, you say no, SMH. The B-12 wants to see a financial commitment to the athletics program - we can't show that paying rent in a mislocated 56 year old municipal stadium that is too large for our fan base to be motivated to buy season tickets. Further the B-12 see the LBS as a tired, old stadium - and they know, one of their teams comes here every year. Down the road, if attendance against B-12 opponents picks up, the OCS can expanded because the demand for seats will pay for it. But we will likely never get that chance because the B-12 has told us we need an OCS to be invited. Every school in the B-12 plays in an OCS. Every school invited from the AAC has an OCS. USF got the message, announced an OCS & already has a $50M commitment from private sources to kickoff their fund raising campaign. What more evidence do you need?

I've been following most of the B12 threads. I must have missed it. So, can you share the link where the B12 said we didn't get in because of not having an OCS?

You and I both know that is FAKE NEWS---no link from the BIG12 will be provided

It's not going to happen.

Based on what I’ve learned from these OCS, etc. discussions, and if this board is at all representative of the fanbase as a whole, I have to agree. I’m no longer sure it’s even what the overall fanbase really wants. And I’m not being critical. It’s more like I just woke up.

Attendance is down all across football. I though the crowd today was fine considering playing a not well known school and mid day Saturday. Atmosphere was still good.

The problem is our stadium is WAY too big. No idea why we don’t utilize tarps etc. to reduce capacity. And the cameras for TV are on the away side or less crowded side of stadium which compounds the problem.

If we had 30k in a 40k capacity stadium it’s 75% full. When you have 30k in 60k capacity it’s 50% full and yes looks poor. Also more empty seats creates less demand for the ticket.

We have about the 3rd highest attendance average in the conference which is good. Houston had 22k last week and tonight looks about the same against Navy. Houston draws way worse than us. Probably 10k lower on average.

What hurts perception is seeing an empty stadium. No conference wants that. But it’s a smaller stadium we need…not a new fan base. Even a smaller crowd today would have looked great in Houston’s, Cincy, or UCF 40k capacity stadiums.

An on campus stadium would be killer. A reduced capacity LB in the meantime would help tremendously from a perception standpoint. Tarp it to make it 40k. All NFL stadiums did this last year.

Losing today sucked. We lost a game we should have won and it was our own fault.

On the flip side at the end of the year that will not be a bad loss. That team probably wins 10 plus games. Around the country that is not perceived a bad loss.

W are 3-1 and have 3 winnable games coming up. And hopefully can head to UCF at 6-1 of 5-2 at worse.

Seeing everyone freak out and wanting to give up just because we lost a close game to a good team is stupid. It just shows you how are used to winning everyone has become. Keep the faith.

Just remember the big 12 just took Houston who’s football program has been very average over the last five years and their attendance is way worse than ours.

Seems like the NEW has worn off on the UH OCS. 25k folks in attendance yesterday for Navy. Maybe if you build it, they won't come.

They built an on campus facility. We did not. We will be watching them play in the Big 12 and collecting an annual 20 million dollar check, while we are stuck in a hybrid AAC/CUSA collecting a 5 million dollar check. Whether the new has worn off their stadium or not, it served it’s purpose.

Game yesterday vs UTSA only had 29,264. That's not even half full. Houston had 25,054 vs Navy and their stadium looked more packed even though its a few thousand less because they play in a smaller stadium.

But the UTSA game brought in only 29,264 with a 60k capacity stadium? Not much to brag there.

Last I saw the current official capacity is 58,325 but it's probably even less now with new amenity areas. With my math skills, I'm think we were slightly over 50% full.

1000% … and maybe 40k capacity.

You have to create demand for your product. If all the sudden it’s packed, bumping, and great atmosphere… it would change everything. Then yes people will pay higher dollar to get in. That’s business demand. You can charge more $$ when there is less product (seats) available.

There is no urgency to buy something when there is plenty of a product available. And open seats always hurts atmospheres…restaurant, movies, games, concerts. This isn’t rocket science.

They could do this now with tarps and reduced seating at LB. This seems like an easy decision… but it’s never been done.

I attended two Princeton football fames when I lived there and obviously wasn’t expecting great football. I went because it was on campus, college game day atmosphere, etc. and I wanted to check it out. Had the game been at New Jersey Turnpike Stadium/whatever, no way. I lived in Orlando when UCF was Div 1/2. I was offered game tickets a few times when their games were played at the Citrus Bowl, but nah, no thanks. Had they played their games on campus back then, sure, let’s go check it out. It makes a difference to both the casual fan and fans of other teams. Memphis has a lot of both.

It’s sad the majority of Memphis alumni never step foot back on campus after graduation.

What's really sad is the majority of alums never attend the football games or contribute a dime towards the improvement of their university. That's exactly why it took 10 years to build the IPF. It is what it is and it's why we will continue to play in the LB, which I'm fine with if we make some improvements.

I wouldn’t think the majority of most school’s alumni do. There aren’t any stadiums that big. Make it a campus event and perhaps more would attend. Get them back on campus and perhaps more would donate. They’d be able to see what their dollars are paying for. Games at a rented off-campus venue accomplish none of that. It’s nothing more than a detached place to go watch/play the game. Then everyone goes home.

Your keyword is 'perhaps more would attend'. I'm just not buying in that if we try to keep up with the Joneses and spend $250M, suddenly everyone will want to attend Tigers FB games. Keep winning will do more for enthusiasm than an OCS.

“Perhaps more” isn’t the same as “everybody”. Perhaps I should have omitted “Perhaps”.

Perhaps
