There is no such thing as a flawless role model. Even the greatest American, George Washington, was a slave owner.

As for Paterno, he unquestionably did great things: He was one of the greatest of all time at his chosen profession. He was unique in the coaching profession for his emphasis on academic achievement. He donated millions to charity and actively led fundraising drives to raise hundreds of millions for his university's academic side. He mentored literally thousands of young men and helped them become better people.

None of the bad stuff he did can remove those facts.
I don't think we're gonna see eye to eye here.

Bolded... And that's one of the best things about America - reasonable people can disagree reasonably and still be friends. We just need more of it.

end of sappy moment, back to our telling each other how much the other one sux lol

Idk, Penn State is a clear threat to take Fick from us and their scandal will absolutely be one of the considerations that Amy Fickell and family will likely have an opinion on. It's fairly relevant to a thread about extending our coach and keeping him around.

Agreed.

And I personally think that Luke & family have very different values than the rest of our culture.

Judging by which parish they joined, they're extremely conservative Catholics (they joined the most conservative church in Cincinnati that's not Latin-mass).

And I don't mean politically conservative. Although politically conservative and church-conservative are often correlated, they're very different things. For example: Luke very loudly sings the praises of his QB's decision to raise a kid out of wedlock and gushes over how it's improved Des's maturity. How many conservative church-goers would do that today? Yet it's an attitude that's very common in conservative Catholic culture: focus on people's best traits, forgive them for their faults, and earnestly strive to help them become better people.

That's why he doesn't act like every other coach. He ultimately isn't overly motivated by more money (a very conservative-Catholic trait). They're not "moving people" (a very conservative-Catholic trait). When talking about his future career options, he is very straightforward & doesn't lie about them in public or in private (a very conservative-Catholic trait).

All this tells me that he's what I call an extremely uncloistered conservative Catholic. He has his own values for himself, but he has no impulse to proselytize. He leads others by example rather than by preaching.

You might think that I'm describing a goal that everyone should strive for (and in a way I am). But my main point is that ultimately Fickell has very different knee-jerk reactions to everything than you or nearly everyone else outside of sub-culture that is nearly invisible in today's world (a sub-culture that I am a part of).

Because here's the kicker: remember the trait I talked about above about focusing on people's best traits and forgiving them for their faults? While the Sandusky thing probably horrifies them, and while Paterno's actions toward Sandusky probably horrifies them..... it wouldn't surprise me if the overall attitude of forgiving Paterno's legacy for this one fault (no matter how large) doesn't bother the Fickells nearly as much as it bothers you, the media, or twitter.

How long does Nick Saban Coach?
Once he retires, That evens the playing field even more. it’s getting harder for CLF to leave UC.

He will be the Coach K of UC. Even if Ohio State ever offered him, our conference will be easier. it’ll be easier to get into the playoffs, and if he can continue to improve recruiting, there may be less of a drop off. Obviously, Ohio State has so much depth. But you can only play 11 players at a time anyway. If our 2 deep is very strong, it does not matter as much.

I think it’s down to only one other job: OSU. He is coach for life here and he knows it. He loves his situation here and he’ll stay until his alma mater calls him home. I’m ok with that.

Who is a better coach- Ryan Day or CLF? I mean overall coach. Program building, having players run through a wall for you, in game coaching, recruiting, game prep, everything. I’d like to know what people think.

I say Luke. Financial resources are pretty much unlimited in Columbus; tradition, recent national championship/CFP history, premier recruiting, the B10 brand all pave the way for a good coach to have a great program. I would say we have a good (becoming great) program with a great coach who has had to do a lot more heavy lifting to elevate Cincinnati football during his time here. His accomplishments so far are nothing short of remarkable.

Just some reference material on who is making what and where they rank:

Quote:The annual USA TODAY Sports database of college football head coach salaries again sees the University of Alabama's Nick Saban atop the list, making more than $9.7 million.

University of Cincinnati football head coach Luke Fickell ranks No. 45 with $3.4 million, which puts him ahead of several of his "Power Five" counterparts.

Ohio State University head coach Ryan Day ranks No. 9 with a salary of more than $6.6 million.

Coaches of regional relevance making less than Fickell in the University of Louisville's Scott Satterfield (No. 48), West Virginia University's Neal Brown (No. 52), Notre Dame's Brian Kelly (No. 60) and Miami University's Chuck Martin (No. 114).

Why would Fick leave?

Better why stay?

1. He is an Ohio/Midwest guy.
2. He is building a power here
3. We are moving into a P5 Conference
4. He currently makes $3 - 4 million and once in B12 we can up to $5+
5. He lives in a wonderful community that is an easy commute to Clifton
6. His kids can attend excellent Catholic Schools
7. His wife is not a "moving person". Happy wife, happy life.

It all depends on how important it is be for him to coach one of the iconic, blue blood programs, where they recruit themselves. He hasn't been offered one of those. Only a couple of people know this answer. I get the impression everything you said above trumps this idea (specifically for USC) but we truly don't know. I will not lose sleep worrying about it though. I think coach will be here at least another 2-3 years but we could be surprised sooner than that. Regardless, the talent he has built and the system he has built won't leave the cupboard bare if someone else (Freeman, Denbrock, Guidugli, Herman?) has to take over. I don't want that to happen but anything is possible. Cunningham is going to make that decision as hard as possible for Fickell.

RE: How Much Does Fickell Make Next Year?
Dare I say this? I dare. Before Fickell arrived our program showed a lasting ability to win despite the coach that was in place. Dantonio, Kelly, Jones, T*********. Each had their own level of success despite the coaching turnover. That says something about the program. Fick has shown what our program and the right head coach can do TOGETHER over time. IN NO WAY, SHAPE, OR FORM am I minimizing the importance of the head coach to the program. It just feels like UC Football has hit a level of when the program can market and recruit itself as part of the overall success. If Fick leaves at some point in the future, and that will be a sad day indeed, I won't have many sleepless nights because another great coaching candidate can come in and have success. It's been proven for the past two decades. That is a damn good place to be as a program from Ohio not named Ohio State.

If keeping CLF is a bidding war UC won't ever win. But that shouldn't stop them from making sure he is compensated at least somewhat commensurate with his success. UC should bump him now.

A coach making $3.4M being offered $6M might feel its worth the risk of taking on a new job while a coach making $5M might not take the risk.

Agent says coach could double pay by leaving

By: Dan MonkPosted at 4:04 PM, Dec 27, 2021 and last updated 7:23 PM, Dec 31, 2021

CINCINNATI — The joy ride that was the University of Cincinnati football season made Luke Fickell one of the most popular coaches in the school’s history.

And arguably its most valuable.

That’s because the Bearcats finished the season at No. 4 in the nation, while its head coach ranked 45th with an annual salary of $3.4 million, according to USA Today.

UC boosted Fickell’s annual pay by $1 million when it extended his contract in 2020, but the Bearcats’ on-the-field success and UC’s pending admission to the Big 12 conference means Fickell could easily double his pay by leaving next year.

“He’s worth probably $7 to $8 million,” said Richard Katz, a Cincinnati-based sports agent. “I mean, he can make this program into one of the top football programs in the country.”

Katz is the founder of KMG Sports Management, whose client roster includes former UC basketball coaches Bob Huggins and Andy Kennedy. While he doesn’t represent Fickell, he has a pretty good idea of what he would seek if he were negotiating on Fickell’s behalf. The short answer is: More.

“The head coaches in the Big 12 are making anywhere from $3 or $4 million to $8 or $9 million,” Katz said. “I’d argue Luke’s going to be the best coach in that league. So, I’m looking at $7 or $8 million a year maybe with some good bonus money.”

Katz doesn’t think UC could afford an immediate increase to Fickell's current market value. But he thinks it would be possible to do a long-term deal that defers some of his compensation until UC joins the Big 12. At that point, UC’s annual media revenue will increase by more than $20 million.

“They could offer $7-$8 million a year, and say, ‘Luke, we’re going to defer a couple million dollars a year until we get enough cash to pay you,’” Katz said.

UC wouldn’t comment on Fickell’s contract status. But it did make it more difficult for Fickell to leave Cincinnati with a 2020 contract amendment that requires him to pay UC $3.5 million if he leaves before December 31, 2022.

On the other hand, eight colleges spent more than $7 million apiece in 2021 to buy out the contracts of college coaches they wanted to fire or hire. And this year’s crop of new college coaching contracts includes eight deals in which the coach’s annual pay is reported to be $7 million or more. The list includes Brian Kelly’s new 10-year contract with Louisiana State University (LSU), reportedly worth $95 million.

“Does Luke deserve to be in that range? Absolutely,” Katz said. “Number one because he’s got integrity. I think what Luke says, he means. Shaking hands with Luke means, ‘I’m gonna be here and we’re going to make this program into something it’s never been.’”

In the end, that might make all the difference for UC’s attempt to retain Fickell, who interviewed at Michigan State two years ago and barely acknowledged a coaching opportunity at Notre Dame this year. That could change if a job opened at Ohio State University, where Fickell played in the 1990s and served as interim head coach in 2011. But that doesn’t seem likely anytime soon. Buckeyes Coach Ryan Day recently denied rumors that he was interested in an NFL job with the Chicago Bears. And Fickell recently told reporters he’s happy to compete against Ohio State.

“The more success we have, the better opportunities we have to compete and not just on the football field but in the recruiting battles, because I think that’s where some of the rivalries occur,” Fickell said. “When I came here, a great mindset of mine was I hope someday we can become a rival to my alma mater. All of the sudden, maybe they look at you and recognize that, ‘We have to battle against these guys.’”

It helps when the list of jobs that CLF would leave for should not be open in the immediate future. Notre Dame and MSU appear to be locked up for now, and Penn State gave Franklin a new deal, though he is always a wild card.

Day seems content for now, and it will take a couple more seasons for OSU to run him off based on results.

Day is about to get his own $10M mega deal after that rose bowl win with all those opt-outs. Add in their new DC and they should be legit next year unfortunately

RE: How Much Does Fickell Make Next Year?
This is all just speculation. Katz is not Fickell's agent, not does he have any insight into what Fickell's motivations are. The university is moving forward with plans for the indoor facility which is something he has been asking for. I'd say that he would ask for more pay for his assistants before asking for a raise for himself. By his actions, you can see that more pay is not the most important thing for him. I say that because he never does any endorsements here in the city. I'm sure he could get as much work as he wanted there, but I don't think he has done any endorsements.

Create a back loaded contract that creates equity over the life. Track the timeline of inclusion into the B12.

Excluding OK and TX, OSU is top at $6m, TCU was about that before Patterson bite the dust. Others are $4m area. BYU is low at $2 million.

Pay Fick $4-4.5 next year.

Look until we get B12 full money the bucks just are not available.

OSU could afford Gundy $6 but they got all that T Boone Pickens money.

This is ridiculous. He's the absolute most important person. Pay him $7M minimum NEXT SEASON. Find the money. Are we big time or not?

It’s not just him. Assistant pool needs to be jacked up or we will remain the AAA affiliate for staff. Sounds like Eliano is perhaps next to follow Mason and Denbrock out the door..

Between the season sell out, the record amount of merchandise sold and the couple million extra for the CFP appearance, the increases are fully funded for next year if you want to use it.

Or we can go cheap until we get to the B12 and we can deal with worrying again about losing CLF in 10-11 months.
