RE: How Much Does Fickell Make Next Year?
Jumping at the immediate payday probably sounds alluring to some. But Fickell has reached a point where he is gonna make a whoooole lot more over his career than he would ever get from a buyout. You can say he doesn't chase the money, but he's already making 3.7M a year and can do pretty much whatever he wants here. No reason to leave unless it's an obvious one. Penn State is worrisome if Franklin leaves.

Amy will rule out PSU just like MSU. Almost no decent Catholic Schools. Amy said "We are not moving people".

Bolded, I'm not sure of that. Fickell admitted he really didn't like taking on his alma mater the last time UC went to Columbus. Doing that every year @ PSU as a conference opponent, and facing what has been a steep mountain for teams not named OSU to overcome for a CFP bid, might not be as appealing as we've come to believe.

If UC can get him to $4 million for next season, and more the year after, he'll have both the NY6 autobid and enhanced recruiting potential in the Big 12 and might be able to write his own ticket here for future compensation. Some school can always offer more dollars but it appears we have some non-monetary advantages he and his family seem to value.

If Amy really had issues with Michigan State handling the Nassar situation then she will certainly have issues with Penn State. Those bastards are irredeemable to me after they put the Joe Pa statue back up.

I did not know that. At least they should add a plaque that says "Overlooked Sandusky being a pervert!"

You know what, I double checked and I appear to be complete wrong. My mistake everyone.

I was getting the statue controversy confused with the 2016 decision to honor Paterno at halftime (which is also awful):

Meh, nobody's perfect.

A statue doesn't say someone never did bad things. It says some of the things they did were great.

King David killed a man so he could sleep with the guy's wife. Saint Paul was a genocidal fanatic. Thomas Jefferson raped his slaves. Ghandi was a racist. MLK plagiarized his PhD dissertation and cheated on his wife repeatedly.

If we took down statues of everyone who ever made a large mistake, there'd be no statues anywhere.

Weirdly, I actually know the granddaughter of one of his "followers". So goofy to hear her refer to him as just Martin lol

I'm pretty sure most people don't ignore the molestation and rape of children because they're too busy with their jobs.

Joe Pa let 30+ kids have their lives irreparably damaged so he could continue running his football program in peace. Everyone at Penn State knew, for over a decade, what Sandusky was and they kept it quiet. They knew he was caught sodomizing a child in the shower and they let Sandusky work at the Second Mile charity FOR A DECADE without any effort to stop him.

If there's an afterlife you don't have to worry about which side they ended up on.

Then maybe there should be fewer statues.

Not sure the Sandusky era the would keep Fickell away. But if the that culture still persists at Penn State it would keep me away - a choice I will never have to make.

None of that changes what I said.

Statues are built for the great things people do, not for the lack of bad things.

The reason is very Christian: we should forgive people for their sins and leave that judgement to God. As mere humans, we should judge people for their best actions, not their worst actions.

He could be a serial killer or an actual rapist and it wouldn't make a bit of difference.

This is a deeply cynical worldview.

Cynicism does not make good men (or women). Cynicism makes people behave worse, not better.

We need role models and heroes. In times of trial, we act on instinct. And our instincts need to be honed by examples of what other people did in similar situations. In theory, those examples could be either positive or negative. But they have a much greater impact (especially on kids) if they are examples of greatness.

I’m going to guess that Fickell makes $5m next year. That would probably ward off a number of schools, not that those would be a threat anyway, but it would reduce speculation I suppose.

Coach’s pay from last year. some of the numbers don’t make sense - Kelly makes $1.8m at Notre Dame? Day at OSU around $5.6. Sabin at the top at $9.3m:

That's Kelly's base, but you can bet his incentives likely put him up in the air of Saban honestly. Good thing about private schools is they don't have to daylight any of that.

No we just need to pick our heroes more carefully. I personally love history, but it’s not accurate when it’s cleansed. For example, if we are going to celebrate Columbus Monday, we should learn about some of the truly evil things he did. Or that there’s evidence that people in Genoa already had an inkling of the New World decades before Columbus “discovered” it. But this discussion is for another thread.

Forgiveness is a respectable virtue and can be bestowed to anyone. Leaving judgment to God is cool with me (not my belief but I get it).

Nonetheless, leaving any aspect of the Paterno legacy up at Penn State is insane. You can forgive and move on and pray for healing, but honoring Joe Pa sends a clear message to those kids and their families that Penn State football is more important than a 10 year old getting sodomized in the shower.

Yep. Former Notre Dame DC Clark Lea (now Vandy's coach) was making $1.6M/year and reportedly they are paying Marcus Freeman something north of that. If they are paying those guys that much they are definitely paying BK much more-- according to this article from a Notre Dame site there are reports BK's compensation would put him in the Top 10 in CFB, somewhere between $6M-9M.

There is no such thing as a flawless role model. Even the greatest American, George Washington, was a slave owner.

As for Paterno, he unquestionably did great things: He was one of the greatest of all time at his chosen profession. He was unique in the coaching profession for his emphasis on academic achievement. He donated millions to charity and actively led fundraising drives to raise hundreds of millions for his university's academic side. He mentored literally thousands of young men and helped them become better people.

None of the bad stuff he did can remove those facts.

Idk, Penn State is a clear threat to take Fick from us and their scandal will absolutely be one of the considerations that Amy Fickell and family will likely have an opinion on. It's fairly relevant to a thread about extending our coach and keeping him around.
