In that podcast, Brown predicted C-USA, who could lose upwards of 8 schools, could consider completely overhauling everything. New conference office location. New administration. New conference name.

Worst case scenario for C-USA, they could lose 2 to the AAC (3 if Memphis leaves?), 2 to the MW, and 4 to the SB. And it would still stretch from El Paso to Norfolk to Miami. They would need a restart.

Are we great? No. I wouldn't consider us a game changer in basketball, but we would definitely be in the top 1-3 of the conference most years. Any time you can add to the top is a good thing I suppose.

Also have to remember we shared a conference with Memphis when they were playing in the National Championship. Hard to win the tournament against them, especially when it was hosted at Memphis. They beat us in the conference championship in multiple overtimes once. We've had some really good teams who didn't make the tournament for this reason alone.

As for a new era, yes to an extent. We love Dan Dantoni as our coach and we have more excitement in the program under him for sure. We also have what will most likely be a 1st Rd Draft Pick this year in Kinsey.

ODU/Marshall/WKU by far have the best basketball attendance in CUSA with all three averaging 6k+ per game. Last time we hosted WKU before COVID we had over 7,800 for the game. That's pretty legit for a mid major imo.

You shared a conference with Memphis for 8 years, but there was a 31-year gap between NCAA Tournament appearances for Marshall (1987 to 2018). What happened between 1986-1987 and 2004-2005 when you didn't share a conference with Memphis?

We weren't very good LOL....that's about the only way to explain it. Although Kent State was pretty dang good while we were in the MAC. Pretty sure they went to the Elite 8 one year.

My point was, we had some pretty good teams during those 8 years, but it didn't matter because Memphis was better. Either way, we are usually in the Top 100 of NET/RPI which is still solid, even without an NCAA Tournament appearance.

Well I'm sure getting games against Memphis helped your RPI during those years.
During those same years, South Alabama managed to get an at large bid in 2008 and Middle Tennessee managed to get an at large bid in 2013 playing in the Sun Belt without the benefit of a Memphis in our league. Also, teams don't stay up forever and teams don't stay down forever. It wasn't that long ago that Marshall basketball was struggling:
RPI by year:
2012-2013 - 208
2013-2014 - 276
2014-2015 - 296

My point isn't to put down Marshall, but to discredit your thesis that your NET (and prior to NET it was RPI) would be the best or among the best every year. At this point in time Marshall basketball looks good. That doesn't mean you won't be back in the 200's of the NET within 5 years. That's all.

I just looked it up. Here is our RPI for three of those years with Memphis. In 2011-2012 I'm pretty sure we were the highest ranked team to not get an at large bid. We had other years during those 31 years where imo, we should have received an At Large bid, but we didn't. I think we would have won some easier conferences and earned the auto bid during some of those 31 years.

09-10: 67
10-11: 54
11-12: 44

As you can see, we might not have made the tournament, but we have had solid basketball for a while now as well as what I would consider really good fan support for a mid major program.

Marshall Average Basketball Attendance Since 2010

2010- 5,481 (99)
2011- 5,524 (100)
2012- 6,150 (87)
2013- 5,598 (100)
2014- 4,713
2015- 5,107
2016- 5,473 (97)
2017- 5,815 (93)

2018- 5,485
2019- 6,065

The NCAA used to rank the Top 100 teams by attendance, as you can see, we are typically ranked inside the top 100 or close to it, which is pretty good considering there are 350 NCAA D1 basketball teams.

Starting in 2018 the NCAA only ranks the Top 30 for some reason. We were on pace to average over 6,500 in 2020 when COVID hit. 2014 and 2015 is when we made a coaching change and had terrible seasons.

Once again, I don't think we are a "game changer" for SBC basketball, but I'm not sure anyone the SBC can land is a game changer by themselves.....but we will bring a solid team who will be one of the top SBC teams most years and will probably lead the conference in attendance most years.

Since Units are the money maker with basketball, it doesn't have the same monetary impact.

True, but it's easier to get an NCAAT win as a 12-14 seed as opposed to a 15 or 16 seed.

While this is true, its worth noting that it still involves an upset. The SBC's ambition is to avoid the play in games/16 seed. Recent history indicates that 12-15 seeds are winning a fair amount now...

My question...do you get an extra unit for winning a play in game? If so, then I wouldn't mind that from a financial standpoint lol

Yes you do.

In that case I would rather us get the play in game as opposed to a 15 seed or regular 16 seed lol

As I pointed out in the previous post, that three year stretch was not "normal" for us. We made a bad coaching hire and was transitioning during that 3-4 year period. Our coach literally came in and cleaned house. We played a whole season where we had walk ons starting for us as Dantoni our current coach was changing the culture.

The question is, how many SBC teams can go 12-21 and still average 5k/game in basketball?

Of course every team, especially mid majors have their ups and downs, and I said Marshall isn't a game changer in basketball, but we are definitely a very solid add in basketball (in my opinion at least.)
