This was starting to get mixed into the 2022 stuff so I'm adding a 2023 thread:

May as well add in that we're in the thick of it for 4*, Top 50 Wing, George Washington III out of Louisville.

I see where Centerville HS Small forward Tom House just committed to Florida State. Where's UC stand with his teammate PG Gabe Cupps? I know UC has been involved and this kid has an impressive offer list so far.

All I know is our staff has interest and has seen him in person. Not sure how mutual the interest is.

Yancy Gates is the only Top 75-ish recruit from inside the I-275 loop to play for UC in the past 25 years. Its very disappointing. Although admittedly I don't know how many they missed out on.

UC had a great streak of landing the best Cincinnati player in the early 90's.
John Jacobs 1991
Keith Gregor 1992
Damon Flint 1993
Bobby Brannen 1994

But after that I can't recall anyone.

RE: BB Class of 2023
Looking back since 2003, how many top caliber (Top 75) players have there been inside the city limits?

Jordan Sibert (OSU)
Darius Bazeley (went Pro)
Yancy Gates (UC)
Logan Duncomb (IU amid the Brannen tumult)
Semaj Christon (XU)
Bill Walker (Kansas State)
OJ Mayo (USC)

50% hit rates on relatively clean recruitments with none of those going outside of 100 miles from Cincinnati to play.

I mean, Sage is the top rated guy in the area for 2022 and we landed him...but he isn't a Top 75 guy. Truthfully, there just is never a lot of high value talent in Cincinnati (the tri-state is a different story, but how many of them are Cincinnati first guys?).

You're conflating your arguments...do you want guys from the area, or do you want top quality guys? There aren't many that stick in-between that venn diagram, and those who do, generally end up around here, even if it isn't one of the two Cincinnati schools (with the exception of the Huggins two who left to the highest bidder when things went south). You also have to look at fit...Luke Kennard was NEVER coming here, Adreann Payne went to the best basketball school in the country at the time. etc.etc. Asking us to get guys like Rayvon and being upset when we don't is like us getting pissed when Jordan Hicks, Jackson Carman, Paris Johnson, etc. go to Texas/Clemson/OSU for football.

not sure if i codified my stance: not local for the sake of local. just wouldn't think you'd have to work as hard to convince whatever elite/quasi elite talent exists in this city to play for one of the premier hoops teams of all time, esp now that on paper, we're in a top conference

Understandable...but I think the issue comes into play with any "local" stud prospect anywhere that doesn't have a Top 5 program in their backyard. I'm pretty sure any coach would be happy if they hit on 50% of local kids who are at that level, it's just that we don't have many to begin with, so 50% feels like loss when we only get chances every 3-4 years.

He's a load, he's got size and athleticism. You're right though, it's big time OSU country up here, but the tide is slowly turning some with more and more UC grads flying their flag. That being said, I would be surprised if he chooses UC. St. Mary's is a big time OSU town, and the perception of playing for the mighty Buckeyes with the hometown folks might be too much to overcome. I'm definitely not holding my breath on this one.

Very few guys have gotten full evals for '23, and he is at #135 with a film review. The 247 guys have been open in saying they're still trying to get through their '22 rankings at this point.

He has offers from Virginia Tech, Wake, NC State, Providence, Texas A&M, and South Carolina. Not great...but it's not like we're trying to beat out Bradley and St. Bonaventure or something
