The powers that be over on Wheeler Street seem to differ with their colleagues on South Main when it comes to athletic excellence, at least the show biz part of it.

Of course many HBCUs feature extremely entertaining, extremely talented, very exciting marching bands.

From what I’ve seen of TSU’s, theirs is extremely high in musicianship and extremely versed in classic marching, as opposed to dance steps or just moving without cadence. Oh they don’t omit that part. But the marching accompanying their fantastic playing is something to behold. They maintain Aggie band like discipline both on the field and in the stands.

We got a great show from Prairie View when they visited us. This one promises to be even better.

Yeah I'm looking forward to the band and the crowd just as much as the game. I hope we aren't running commercials on the jumbotron while they're trying to perform. I've always found that to be rude.

The drum majors alone are worth the price of admission.

But it has long been a staple of Rice games to go to concessions and bathrooms during the game so one could be in one's seat for the halftime show.

They really are amazing and fun to watch. Its a great show they put on!

I've worked quite a few SWAC events through the years. I think I'd rank Southern's band as my favorite.

TSU's is certainly the loudest.

To be fair, I've worked more basketball than football games so it's not always the best comparison. But I've worked a few TSU football games too. I'd probably put The Ocean of Soul in the top 3 in the SWAC.

Cool. What do you do at the games?

Computer stats. I did the SWAC basketball tournament (men's and women's games) when it was in Houston for like 3 or 4 years in a row (they moved it to Birmingham a couple of years ago?). I've worked a couple of TSU football games, and some individual TSU basketball games too when they're in a bind.
