2022 Basketball Recruits
Looks like 2022 6'7" PF Delrecco Gillespie from GA committed via Twitter today. Here's a highlight film from last summer. The clip is a bit old, but he looks like someone who does most of his damage around the hoop. He had several other mid major offers including Eastern and Western Michigan.
Welcome aboard!

Nothing against him, I'm sure he's a good player, but I don't see much defense being played there against him.

I believe defense is outlawed in AAU.

Who puts defense (other than blocked shots) on highlight tapes????

Looks like a solid PF to play beside Hornbeak.

That is a bad stereotype. My son has been playing AAU for about 4-5 years now and is a freshman in HS. While there are teams that are bad defensively, most coaches I know won't put a kid in the game that doesn't give 110% on the defensive end of the court. The truth is, there is ALWAYS someone who can put the ball in the basket, so finding someone who will give the effort on both ends is key.

I don't pretend to be an expert on AAU basketball, but I hope what you see in your son's experience is the new trend. Based on the AAU videos for just about every recruit we've got for years now, it's tough to believe that the AAU coaches you know represent the mindset of AAU coaches as a whole. It's usually pretty easy to see a difference in defensive intensity between AAU highlights and HS highlights. I absolutely agree that prioritizing two way players is very important but that's definitely not focused on (at the higher levels at least) today as much as it used to be. Sendy is one that won't play kids that don't defend, which I certainly appreciate.

Sold on this prospect. Keep your back to the basket young man!

AAU Basketball has its place. But in the words of a great kid I know..."I was more nervous about getting a good BM in the morning than I ever was about an AAU game."

To be fair, this kid wasn't a "Georgia Tech target" or anything like that but his point was very well taken.

I’d avoid recruiting players who get nervous about their bowel movements.

True, but if they know where the weight room is it might be worth the risk.

RE: 2022 Basketball Recruits
AAU basketball is "if you pay, you can play" for a majority of the kids (and their parents). IMHO, these kids would be better served playing a variety of sports (organized or pick-up) at a younger age. Sadly, the pick-up game has gone the way of the dial telephone. Pick-up game: a pick-up game is a game that has been spontaneously started by a group of players. Players are generally invited to show up beforehand, but unlike exhibition games there is no sense of obligation or commitment to play. Pick-up games usually lack officials and referees, which makes them more disorganized and less structured than regular games, but the total number of players in such games globally is likely to be greater than the number playing in formal competitions and leagues.

At a young age, that statement is true. Last year, (summer after 8th grade) we didn't pay a single dime. Good players do not pay anything. Great players get paid to play (free travel, lodging, shoes).

Wish I knew how to cut and paste ... but internet news has Kent getting a commit from a 6-5 shooting guard, Brendan Moss over Rhode Island, Murray State and Cleveland State, with emphasis on the word - shooting - to go along with Gillespie commitment from last month. Arguably two of the hardest spots to fill for a mid-major .. solid baseline players and 2G with legit size and Kent lands one of each, early.

With 1 scholarship left would guess staff holds on to it until spring for a transfer/juco at position of need, .. but who knows.

That said, the FR/SO class next year should be pretty impressive AND EXPERIENCED considering Hernandez-VCD-Sullinger-Rollins-and both post players will all fit that profile, along with the newbies.
