Ken, my friend.

This transfer is a CASE STUDY (n=1) of what is or could happen in CFB.

Like when we see a hospital ER overrun with Covid cases do we dismiss it, as "not in my city?" Not important. Doesn't effect me.

The key elements here are two fold:

1). The real presence of the transfer portal which apparently will continue to be active again this year,

2). The 4-game redshirt rule. After game #4, "Adios coach" I'm redshirting and will transfer.

Where he goes is almost irrelevant to scores of FBS/FCS schools.. I don't care if he goes to Alabama, Jackson State (to play for Coach Prime), Florida (lot of mild winters there), etc.

The larger point is that what he is doing, others may also do.

Dear steve,
While I will agree with your key elements, unless or until it effects Eastern, it's something that no one has any control over. So, why talk about Michigan State transfers when it does not effect Eastern?
Your statement about Covid does not fit in the same category as football transfers,, and should not be used as a comparison.

I think it is indicative of a potential trend in college football. You have the guys at Michigan State. Then this past weekend there was the guy at Ohio State who quit the team mid-game. Gotta think knowing the transfer portal is open played a part in that. Plus OSU had lost another LB to the transfer portal earlier that week.

It seems if a player is not happy because they aren't getting the playtime they think they should, they are bailing from a program instead of working harder to earn their way onto the field.

Coch Day made the following comment that I think hits it head-on, "In today's day and age, guys can leave after four games because they can redshirt, and then if they want to go into the [transfer] portal, that's their prerogative. I have a hard time with that because I think when you make a commitment to a team at the beginning of the year, you make a commitment to Ohio State, to the Buckeyes — that's what you do."

Well stated... The OSU player didn't even give 'two weeks notice' like is customary in the real world. 03-lmfao

(Before I retired I gave 6 weeks notice and they posted my position before I retired. I saw an employment contract for a professional through health care agency. 30 days either way - employer or consultant employee).

Yes, that 4-game redshirt + transfer portal can sure be tempting to a unhappy student - athlete.

Yes, but I believed they each transferred during the off-season. I'm not sure if we have anyone who pulled the plug and transferred mid-season. That's where my concern lies. Paraphrasing Coach Day, if you make the initial commitment for the year, you should stick it for the year. I have no problem with athletes transferring between seasons. When you walk off the field and quit the team halfway through a game, that becomes an issue.

This is crazy. Transferring mid-season from a nationally ranked team????

And they are playing, too.
I noticed both those guys while watching the Nebraska game. What is going on with players? A little adversity and people are taking their ball and going home. No offense but kids today are acting like a bunch of entitled wussies. Pretty soon, college sports are going to become completely unwatchable.

Your dad taught you it was okay to quit on teammates during a season? Did you ever play football? Rhetorical question. Let's move on.

Not to sound like a crotchety old get-off-my-lawn kinda guy, but, the younger generation does not adapt to adversity very well. Too many years of lawnmower parenting.

A colleague pointed out that some of these kids may be transferring early so that they can get ahead of the current High School seniors. That part makes sense.

Let me put the student back in student-athlete.

When I worked, the rule of thumb (ROT, as DP would say... 03-lmfao) was 14-days.
I'm not here to debate 14 days, 30 days (in some contracts), etc.

Putting the STUDENT back in. The student needs to complete the academic semester. He needs to get a new school and hopefully get a scholarship for 2nd semester. I don't know if a player can be on athletic scholarship at TWO schools in the SAME academic year. I think he can and the first can not be reused. Once a player has it it can't be 're-issued' at mid-year. The new school has to have an available, non-issued scholarship for the previous year ala a mid-year JUCO transfer.

This is NOT like an employee at even a professional job who gives his 14 day notice, moves on, and has a new salary to replace the old salary.
