Exclamation Rice v UT postgame
Well, now that the preseason is over...

I missed this game (thankfully). Did UT go to their bench later in the game? We couldn't score even in garbage time? Did the 2 backup qbs show anything noteworthy?

RE: Rice v UT postgame
UT didn't go to the bench as much as Rice (outside of their deep corps of running backs - which really didn't matter as they were all very talented - in fact I'd venture to say that was UT's best group of RBs since the 1990s?). Texas was throwing the ball late in the game - probably due to their bad showing at Arkansas.

I thought Constantine showed a solid arm. He had a deep pass to Patterson that was beautifully thrown but the UT defender made a nice play to prevent a long gain. He's not as mobile as the others, but I hope he gets to play against TSU. From what I heard, McCaffrey was throwing up on the sidelines early (food poisoning? not sure what the deal was there). And then I didn't see Green get hurt, but something happened to him obviously. Johnson didn't even make the trip to Austin. We must have had some injuries on the DL too because Floyd had moved over there from the offense at the end of the game.

I thought the offense was a little less predictable. I still would like to see two true backs in the backfield more. The defense did not tackle at well at times. We need Chamberlain back (maybe by conference for him?). And our special teams are just brutal. I do not understand our inability to block on our punts. It's now at the point you're holding your breath on every punt that it's not blocked.

RE: Rice v UT postgame
Saw interviews w/ both Sark and Chip Kelly in last 24-hours talking about need to fit their schemes to talent vs. the talent to their schemes. Context was the RB's at Texas and the TE's at UCLA being so deep. Hope to see more of that with this

Everyone expected 0-3 but the actual optics of the 0-3 is worse than most expected. This is a bad FB team that does not appear to have any material improvements. Had some hope for the D but they seemed to have regressed..esp in tackling. Add on the injuries and this could easily be a 1-11 or 2-10 team. Bragga was a JK hire but not a 'JK guy'. Bloom is both a JK hire and a 'JK guy' so hard to see any scenario sans getting blown-out by TSU getting him fired. So will likely have another year of 'pound the rock' despite the results and regression this year.

TSU doesn't count unless we lose.

ESPN is giving the Owls a 98.1% chance of defeating TSU. I wondering if they watched the games vs UH and UT?

You could also say: ESPN gave the Horns a 97.5% chance of defeating Rice. (Spoiler alert: they were right). But would you say you were wondering if they watched the Horns’ game against Arkansas?

ESPN is probably right again on the odds for a Rice win and we will steamroll TSU.

But point taken: are we really that much better than even somebody like TSU?

Pound the rock will probably work against TSU. Bloomgren will be rewarded by Karlgaard with a 10-year extension, who will in turn be rewarded with a 5-year extension (On top of his recent 3-year extension). Rice baseball will at least return to dominance and Pera continues to perform well. The end.

And Leebron will change his mind.

Unfortunately, another factor providing security for Bloomgren-- and it's a big one-- is that the Dunlevy coaching endowment was established by Silicon Valley alum who became good friends with Bloomgren when he was at Stanford.

Constantine progressed through his reads very quickly. I was impressed. He looks like a natural passer. McCaffrey didn't come out for the second half. I hope he's okay, because I still believe his natural athleticism gives us the best chance to win.

I was encouraged by seeing more rollouts and play-action, but by my count, we only threw the ball three times on first down. That has to stop. We aren't mixing up the play calls enough.

I haven't seen Rice play in Austin since the mid-90s. We knew we would get stomped, but I'm glad we were there. My son and I could see the Rice fans in the opposite corner of the end zone, so we walked over to join them. The comradery was great. Austin is great.

We'll be there against TSU. This team really needs our support, even though we don't care for Bloomgren. Everyone show up. It should be a great night.

Constantine looked solid v. the UT 2nd or 3rd team. Hard to tell too much from where I was sitting. He held the ball too long on the last play and paid the price, but otherwise decent decisions, crisp passes.

Did Bloom address why they didn't call a time out at the end of the game?
