Nor did they issue a statement about a defensive holding call on us after a quick up the middle running play that lasted all of 2 seconds.

Or a MooMoo player turning around and punching a Tiger player right in front of a ref.

Yeah I forgot to mention that one.

And a bull **** holding call on our nose tackle

That one I mentioned

That timeout at the 2:07 mark in the 4th.

RE: SEC Statement on punt return
It was a great read and effort by Calvin that could have been negated by factors beyond his control. One of them would have been a technicality penalty against us but was missed and not reviewable, and the ref beginning the motion to mark the ball would have been a massive shame if it got called because because it wasn't down yet.

Glad fate shone in our and especially CAIII's favor.

Austin already had the ball in his possession when the official began his motion to stop the clock.

Better to try and risk it getting negated than leaving it where it was and having to go all the way down the field the hard way. You always play until the whistle blows.

Especially since that was a free play once the kicking team touched it. The receiving team always has the option to return the ball to the spot at which "illegal touching" (kicking team touching the ball first beyond the line of scrimmage) occurred.

Exactly
It's hilarious
And it's hilarious hearing all the MissStake fans who know nothing about the rule, try to argue why they got hosed.

And no MissStake players were paying any attention to the ref. They thought they had ended the play when they left the ball on the ground after touching it and were beginning to walk away.

I watched the replay and it was the ESPN announcers who got everyone stirred up about it. They were mouthing for minutes about "why wasn't the play stopped". Then they came back many minutes later and said they had found the smoking gun - the second #4 jersey at the line of scrimmage!

This is it. I was taught this as a return guy in HS. If the punting team touches it but leaves it on the ground, the return guy can scoop and run. Even if he were to get a bad scoop and fumble the ball, it goes back to the touching point. Which is why the ref throws the beanie on the ground to mark where the ball was touched. It is exactly a free play. And this is why you always see the punting team pick the ball up and hand it to the ref.

They can cry all they want, but it was the right play the way it played out. They simply screwed up.

The official was waving his arm up & down before Austin picked up the ball, I think, but you have to believe that if he had actually blown his whistle to end the play, other officials would have heard it and waived off the return.

Like when Coach Silverfield wanted to call TO with 1 or 2 seconds left on the playclock, but an official called a TO with ~10 seconds left?

Funny how they never do that in their conference games.

I thought it was down because the slo-mo replay showed the 2nd Miss St player to touch it with his knee on the ground and his hand on top of the ball, but very briefly, so maybe he didn't come to a complete stop long enough for the official to notice, or maybe they don't consider it "in his possession" when he's pinning it to the ground with one hand, which would seem like possession to me when he has his knee on the ground and is therefore down.

Funny stuff
Austin is so fast that it only looked like 2 people.

How was that not one of the top 10 plays on Sports Center?

RE: SEC Statement on punt return
So if they had dropped a flag for the two number 4s, which they should have (and I’m guessing this happens more than we think and is rarely noticed because unless they are near each other it won’t cause any confusion. I doubt a single Moo player on their Oline said I got 4 and the others thought he meant Austin, but I get it), Moo gets a five yard penalty and it is 4th and 1 from the Memphis 48 instead of 4th and 6 from their own 47

Leach likely goes for it then
Better chance of picking it up yes

But not an automatic first down by penalty

Those five yards would have helped them
Had they decided that even though the other official SHOULD NOT have waived his arms for a stoppage and called the play dead at the Memphis 4 with it Memphis ball, we have the ball under 6 minutes after driving for TD

Two or three first downs and we win anyway

They messed it up. It helped Memphis a little, not a lot
Had we been down 5 and there was under a minute left and everything was identical then Moo can whine the call likely cost them the game

As it turns out, it cost them a 4th and 1 opportunity while losing by 4 around midfield.

The real time replay makes it clear he never possessed it or even trapped it any meaningful amount of time. It was functionally a love tap, then he popped up and turned to dap his teammate.

Nobody would ever gain possession of the ball as a result of what he did, so the right call was to eat the whistle as long as a return team member was making a play. Shame the ref realized that a split second too late and made people mad about the wrong thing.

It's all about perspective. If Austin grabs for the ball and Miss State recovers then Miss State fans say good call.

Some stupid stories out there now.
Mississippi State Cheated Out Of Win Over Memphis (Video)

They act like that was the last play of the game and we were down and that play lost the game for Miss State. Just totally bad journalism.

SEC Statement on punt return
And, note that he put his arms down as soon as he saw was Austin was doing, clearly indicating he knew he had started calling the ball dead before he should have. The only question is what should have happened as a result.

The MSU players abandoned the ball before the referee began signalling it dead, so it cannot be argued that the referee caused them to behave differently.

The two number fours are the only real beef. So we got a break. Sometimes they go for you, sometimes they go against you. It ain't the end of the world, and the national media should stop acting as if it was.

Agree

The worst thing a ref did on that play was that arm wave. Missing the two number 4 jerseys happens a LOT and is purely technical

Even though he quickly corrected himself and even though they did NOT down properly that ball no matter how much they whine about it the arms by that ref probably should have resulted in an inadvertent whistle type call

But even that has qualifiers. Refs make inadvertent motions a lot and they don’t all stop plays. But you can argue the Moo players didn’t think to chase Austin quickly enough due to that although not a single one was looking at that ref. After the touch but not picking up of the ball by the Moo kid they wrongfully thought the play was over

Regardless, when Moo punted that ball, whether we get the ball at our 7, whether they get five yards for a penalty, we were headed for a win, albeit less dramatically than with the screw ups

Six consecutive defensive stops by Memphis. We won
