Roel Garcia hit 95 MPH, Deskins hit 94, Caleb Matthews hit 94 and Micah Davis hit 97 MPH, which might be the fastest velocity-wise recorded for any Rice pitcher in quite some time, if ever. (I believe Gayle topped out at 96.)

The pitching coach hire could turn out to be a home run for Cruz. Re: MPH- Matt Anderson threw 100mph. I think Wade Townsend got to 97. Others on that 2003 team may have too.

None of the Big 3 threw over 95mph. Gayle topped out a couple times at 97; Canterino at 96, though he mostly sat in the 92 - 94 range. On this year's squad, Garcia, Davis and Linskey have all topped 95 at times.

Otto could crank it up to 97, especially when he was a reliever in his freshman and sophomore year.

Chargois is hitting 97 - 99 now in the majors, but I don't think he topped 95-96 while at Rice.

Yep. Cingrani could run it up there pretty good too. Bryce Cox and Bryan Price were two other guys that could hit 95+.

RE: Fall Ball 2021
For those attending tomorrow's start of the Fall Ball World Series, I understand the projected starting pitchers will finally be stretched out a bit beyond the two innings they've been working the past several weeks. I suspect tomorrow's matchup will be Garcia vs. Chandler, and both are expected to go at least 4 innings (unless roughed up).

Also, don't forget the RBI Club-sponsored reception at The Roost, beginning at 5:30pm. Everyone is welcome. There will be a keg and perhaps some bites...and Cheito will provide some pre-game comments and insights.

Here are the rosters for the Fall Ball World Series...

https://riceowls.com/news/2021/10/28/bas...eries.aspx

...looks like Janish and Putzig did a really nice job in drafting two very evenly picked squads. I'd give the slight offensive edge to the Gray team, but the slight pitching edge to the Blue.

See y'all tomorrow night.

RE: Fall Ball 2021
For those who missed Friday's Game 1 of the Fall Ball World Series, Bostick posted a tweet this afternoon that showcases some of the nasty pitches from our pitching staff. The standouts to me-- Garcia and Linskey's fastball, Chandler's change up, DeLeon's curveball (wish he could throw it every pitch because his FB is very hittable), Greenwood's and Deskin's sliders, and everything that Davis throws...

RE: Fall Ball 2021
So what was the order of the pitchers in the tweet?

Their uniform numbers in the video were 18 (4 K's), 41 (6 K's), 17 (4 K's), 13 and then 18 (1 K each), 19 (2 K's), 34 (1 K) and then 40 at the end (3 K's). But those numbers don't correspond to their normal roster numbers.

Here's the box from the game (so Chandler had to be #41 with the 6 K's). But no one in the box had 4 K's?? I'm guessing that had to be Linskey at the end? His fastball seemed to be explosive.

The first two were Garcia (he wore 18 instead of his usual 29 because they didn't have a jersey that fit!) and Chandler. DeLeon is 17, Greenwood is 18, Deskin is 13, Linskey is 40, Davis is 34.

Bostick is bringing the change up back into the repertoire of Rice pitchers...

https://twitter.com/colter_bostick/statu...1213230087

...as Wayne did in our glory days. Guys like Bramhall, Bell, Tacker, Wall and others used the CH as their out pitch.

I hope Rice batters will also learn to identify and hit change-ups ... and curve balls, too. Don't want to be fooled & dominated by the soft-tossers.

Hitting change ups and CB's is hard!! That's why pitchers throw them. Identification is helpful but if a pitcher can land/locate these two pitches for strikes most hitters ground out or fly out. Hits off these pitches are usually mistakes made by the pitcher with location.

Is the claim that Rice hitters are fooled by soft tossers statistically supportable, or just an anecdote based on perception?

Historically we have seemed to have trouble with those kind of pitchers. Usually see them in midweek games so there could be other factors there..
