Coach K’s Last Season
Take a look at the prices being charged for tickets to Duke men’s basketball games this year on services like Vivid Seats, both in Cameron and away, and see if you can believe them. The prices for the final home game against UNC are beyond comprehension.

Coach K’s Last Season
There's a very real chance Duke fans may not experience this kind of a high for this long for the rest of their life. Coach K has probably been the best basketball coach of my lifetime. Duke fans probably appreciate him already but they're really going to appreciate him in the next few years.

I’d like to think Duke will fall off the map, but I know better. K will be coaching that team from beyond the grave.

Duke is noticeably absent from VT's home schedule but I figure those are done years in advance. So, no point in bitching over it now.

While K certainly dominates the last 40 years of Duke basketball, people seem to forget that in the 40 years prior Duke finished first, second, or third in the SoCon/ACC 24 times and first 10 times. Basketball rankings did not start until 1950 but Duke was final ranked in the top 10 in 78, 68, 66, 65, 64, 63, 62, 59, and 58. There were final ranked in the top 15 in 79, 57, 54, and 52.

When Vic Bubbas, (an NC State assistant) left Duke in 1969, the program blew up because of an attempt to hire Adolph Rupp which caused a faculty revolt. Then Bucky Waters was hired and he had a military style that did not match Duke at the time. 1972-1977. People talk like 80-83 was the bottom of the barrel for Duke, but it wasn't.

Essentially Duke has been non-competitive in basketball for only 8 years out of the last 80 years.

Duke had the best overall sports program in the SoCon/ACC from 1933 until early 60's and it's not even close. MD, Clemson, and UNC had a few football peaks, MD especially. UNC and NC State had a number of basketball peaks but almost never at the same time. It was Duke who was consistent.

Yeah, and Bobby Dodd and and Bobby Bowden and Pop Warner aren't coming back either. You typically don't get a legend following a legend. Even if your checkbook is bottomless there tends to be a bit of a walk in the wilderness following a legend.

RE: Coach K’s Last Season
We do have a similar program to look at just a few miles away to see the changing of the guard. North Carolina went to two Final Fours under Bill Guthridge although the 1998 was basically Dean Smith's recruits and Guthridge was close to retirement and retired in 2000. Then there was the other guy who I won't mention in fear of angering the UNC fanbase before Roy saved the program.

The guys Mike Krzyzewski recruited will leave a mark on Coach K's legacy until they graduate or leave for the NBA just like the guys Dean Smith did. Then we'll find out if Jon Scheyer can coach/recruit. If he can't, the Coach K coaching tree is deep (Jeff Capel, Chris Collins, Steve Wojciechowski, and Bobby Hurley). There is no Roy Williams but all of these guys should be able to do well at Duke (Collins made the NCAA Tournament at Northwestern, NO ONE else has ever done that). And if Duke wanted to go out of the family, tons of people would want the job assuming Scheyer doesn't run it into the ground. Kentucky had another coach which you can't mention there without getting hit but they were able to get Calipari. Duke will be fine even if Scheyer turns out to be a bust.

Speaking of coaching changing of the guard, don't forget this is also Hubert Davis's first year at North Carolina.

I like coach Doh. He recruited Roy’s first title team.

You’re wondering if Scheyer can recruit? Have you seen the recruiting class that Duke is bringing in next season? Likely to be either the #1 or #2 rated class in the country depending upon Derek Lively’s decision, which is to be announced Monday.

We’ll have to see how well Scheyer does in all aspects once he’s the big whistle but recruiting doesn’t seem to be an issue.

Coach K, Bobby Knight, Denny Crum , Dean Smith are Guys legends are made of. Far and few in between. Lots of other great coaches out there too. Very hard to replace them as been proven time and again. Roy Williams, Jim Behiem will be the next test for a successor to prove their worth.

Old saying...you don't want to be the next guy to replace a legend...you want to be the next guy after the first replacement.

Just ask Gene Bartow. He went 52-9 in the three seasons after succeeding John Wooden at UCLA, with one Final Four, and that was never good enough for Bruin fans. He quit to start up the UAB program.

Joe Hall replaced Adolf Rupp,, Eddie Sutton replaced Joe Hall, Rick Pitino replaced Eddie Sutton, Tubby Smith replaced Rick Pitino, Billy Gelispe replaced Tubby Smith and was replaced with That Memphis Guy that no Kentucky fan wanted in Lexington , John Calipari. He's Been the longest coach there since Adolf Rupp. Go figure .

Yep, Scheyer is definitely following Coach K’s blueprint for his first recruiting class. In 2022, Bennett will have his best recruiting class since the Hunter/Guy/Jerome haul…but UVa is nowhere near the level of Duke (nor Kentucky) recruiting. Scheyer is starting well in maintaining a pipeline of talent.

Mike Hopkins at Washington has to be feeling the heat...if he doesn't bring his team to the NIT at least this year...he'll work himself out of the list to replace Boeheim. Just a feeling, Jim will retire after the 22-23 season. Red Autry or GMac are the heir apparents...at this point along with Hopkins.

Seems like Hopkins has already worked himself off the list Mark. Washington has been horrible with all that talent he's been brining in.
Regarding Coach K, they say his last game in the Dome will set a record, I saw figures over 36,000.

Doing a midfield set up seems like an easy thing to do...but the biggest issue is the donors will get pissed off. To get over 35K, they might be able to set limited restricted seats as those fans could watch off the big screen.

From what I’m seeing, worry more about your team’s social media following than your head coach. If you have a big social media following, your players make more NIL money so you’ll get better recruits. Recruiting isn’t everything but it’s crucial.
