We might have to shift our thinking about TD's versus FG's.

Per Madia:

"The FBS record for career points scored by a kicker is 499 (Oklahoma's Austin Seibert).

The FBS record for field goals is 96 (Arizona State's Zane Gonzalez).

I think Ratke (417 points, 75 field goals) could get to the points total, but I have a hard time thinking he'll kick at least 21 more field goals before the season is over. It's not totally out of reach though."

Not to lessen his accomplishments, but going for an all time record and having 5 seasons of competition would certainly warrant an asterisk next to your stats.

Yep, it would be a disservice to all other players prior to COVID to rewrite the record books and credit players who broke records in their 6th year. I believe cumulative career records should not be counted when players are getting an extra season to rack up numbers. We’ll see what the NCAA does.
Performance stats like FG% don’t have have a built in advantage for current players.
It seems like Ratke is pretty high on the FG% list too. That is something to celebrate for sure.

On the flip side, his redshirt senior year was about cut in half due to COVID.

He got 8 games in spring 2021, counting this fall he could have a 24 games in 2021. Plus he’s chasing these numbers of FBS players, those guys historically had a 12 game season and maybe a conference championship and/or 1 bowl game compared to his 12 game seasons and potential 5 playoff games. Again, not to discount his accomplishments but to ignore the obvious would be unfair to others at the top of the list.

Well frankly I think it's weird that Madia referenced "the FBS record". Whatever Ratke does, he 100% will not have the FBS record, because he's only played like three FBS games.

The Division 1 record, which would include FCS and FBS is what the comparison should be. The Division 1 record would also include any FCS teams playing long playoff runs so no reason to discount that specifically for Ratke.

I agree that getting the extra season kind of changes the recordkeeping a little bit, I just wanted to point out that when also considering the impact on the 2020 season, it's not really as big of a change as one might initially think. Now if people also want to asterisk the playoff games, it does kind of throw the whole math out the window.

Regardless of all of it, Ratke is a beast and I love him and hope to see the Weber State FG highlight from the playoffs 100 times this weekend.

Two non mutually exclusive facts:

Ratke is a beast.

Career records for college sports (and moreso men sports with $$$ pro leagues) are worthless measuring sticks. They are certainty still an achievement for the athlete, and nobody that holds a career record is bad, but it means nothing about their abilities compared to others.

I looked through the FCS records. If the above numbers are correct, Rathke is currently leading points and tied on FG. I guess that's why they are comparing him to FBS, because he's already set those records.

Yeah times are always changing and sometimes that makes sports records more breakable than in the past in general, but I'm guessing the next few years will have a lot of guys with an extra year of eligibility chasing records.

Regardless, Ratke is the man and I hope he shatters everything even if it's with an asterisk. The records he's already broken might not really need an asterisk, it'll be interesting to see when it's all said and done whether or not the record holds up if you throw out the spring season.

Eh, times change. John Riggins still holds the Kansas state record in the 100-yard race; they switched to meters a few years later.

Maybe it's me that's strange, but being the best in all of D1 is better than being the best in a list that only includes FCS. Would you put an astrix if the stat leader for all of D1 just happened to have played for NDSU during their run of 7 straight championships where they had a maximum number of games and the guy in second was a Alabama kicker. My point is that I always want to be placed in the highest category possible.

If you’re going to be so condescending and confrontational on here, at least spell our record setting kickers name correctly. Now tell me to get off your lawn.

RE: Ethan Ratke
After last night, Ratke's 18 FG away from the Divsion 1 record for FGs, and 114 points away from the Division 1 record for all scoring. That sounds insane, but if he hits 20 more FGs (he's got at least 8 games to do that) and 55 XPs (that would be a lot, but against the remaining schedule, 7 TDs/game isn't out of reach. If the Dukes get 4 more playoff games, both of those are pretty reachable.

With the career that Ratke has had, especially with so many playoff games and and the extra spring season, it's crazy that it's still gonna take that much for him to break the records. That current D1 record is very impressive.

That is a ton, and if last season is any indication we’ll leave a ton of those points on the field by taking a knee at the end of those games; especially given how our injuries have been piling up.
