Love Ratke, but he has no shot

Agreed, but more like >60. There are high schools out there these days kicking 60+ (in t-shirts).

NFL teams are only carrying one kicker. They have to be automatic from 45 yards and also able to line up for the 55+ yarder with some degree of confidence. You can't have a kicker by committee approach like a college team carrying 4+ kickers.

Based on what a close friend or relative(?) said on facebook, that he is good from 53, the only looks he will get is at JMU's pro day.

Pro day with no pads on he better be good from 55+ to get a serious look

RE: Ethan Ratke
I do think he can kick farther. Many times he kicks a long FG with room to spare.
Other things to consider:
-We have a good offense and honestly there aren't many times where we need him to kick a long FG. Many times we can get him in range for a much closer kick.
-We have a good defense and may prefer to play the field position game as opposed to going for a long FG and possibly give the other team good field position.

I do think he needs to show that he has more range than what he has kicked in game and he will get that opportunity for scouts during practices (if there is that concern).
The season is also still young and as long as he can maintain his accuracy, I think he at the very least gets a look.

In the playoffs against SHSU he hit from 48 yards and a quarter later with the season on the line they trotted out his backup to try from 51. Safe to say in game competition 48 is it; this is his 6th year on campus and despite 91 FG attempts he’s only tried 2 from 50+ and is 0-2. The coaches know his range, and that dictates what they decide to try in those situations. Again, great accuracy on chips shots, but the leg strength just isn’t there.

Thanks for the clarification. Now that you mention it, I totally forgot about Wise (I think it was him) trying the 51 yard FG. You are right, if Ratke had the range he would have taken that kick.
It's possible that he may have built his leg strength up from the spring, but doubt he would be able to add that many extra yards.

My guess is that he gets looks preseason and then gets on some shortlists for tryouts when teams invariably need to make a switch mid-season.

I love what the guy has provided our program over the years, but a guy just last week made a FG to beat the lions that was bigger than both of Ethan’s misses combined today with the game on the line. I don’t think he has a big enough leg for the league, not even remotely, but we will see. I wish him the best.

I hope some y’all’s watched a bit of this days football.
5 missed kicks in less than 8 minutes of game time? Lol GB v. Bungles game?

I think our varsity HS kicker could do that if he’d stayed with it the last 5 yrs.

More missed PT’s in a 5 game stretch than EVER? Sad

There was something in the kicking waters this weekend for sure. If Ethan gets the opportunity for another walk off FG, I trust him to make it, just like I did those two kicks.

Patriots - Texans yesterday. It was 12-6 in the first half after the kickers missed the first 3 extra points. 03-lmfao

Of course NCAA goalposts are 23′ 4″ apart compared to 18′ 4″ in the NFL.

Don't forget to mention the GB/CIN game. That was a kicking nightmare. Crosby, one of the better kickers in the league missed a gimme FG that was perfectly set up for him in the center of the field.
Although the CIN kicker had one of the most impressive misses I've ever seen. He hit the flag at the top of the goal post. He also hit the opposite post earlier in the game.

RE: Ethan Ratke
Update on Ratke as of 10/23:
Career FG: 90
Career XP: 203
Career Points: 473

----
Most FG in FCS: Ratke
Most FG in D-1: 96 (Zane Gonzales for Az St)
Most Points in D-1: 544 (Brian Westbrook for Villanova)

I really like his chances to get to 97+ FGs. 70+ more points might be a stretch, unless the offense gets a lot better.

Can we verb his name yet? Seems like with the red zone woes, his accuracy is more and more of a needed weapon for this team. Lose to JMU via 8 field goals in a 24-10 game… You got Ratke’d

Ethan may not have a cannon for a leg, but he did hit two 47 yarders, one against the wind and in the rain this past Saturday. And generally he’s cool under pressure (see the Weber St. game as exhibit “A”).

A reliable kicker with a solid 50 yard range may get him some serious looks. As you suggest, his chances at the next level remain to be determined, however, I don’t think his chances are “remote”…it will depend on the pro team.

The WFT just signed a kicker with the last name Blewitt. His first FG was blocked. Ethan will get a look.

If Ratke had made one of those vs VU, he’d be getting consideration for the Payton award. Now 18 of 20 on the season amd has made 33 of his last 35..

RE: Ethan Ratke
Ratke has added 4 FG's and 24 points over the last 2 weeks, now sitting at 497. He needs 48 points to past Westbrook for all-time FCS scorer. He only needs 3 FG's to lead all kickers in FG's made.

48 points will require a deep run in the playoffs. At least to the semi-final game.

Just to nitpick, I think he needs 4 to lead, 3 to tie.

If he gets 2 FGs and 2 XPs per game, that'd require 6 more games to tie. If we make it to Frisco, that's 6 games. Then again, if W&M has a good defense, maybe he'll get 18 points just on field goals.

Overall points for a kicker: 499 (Seibert)
Ratke (as of 11/11/21): 497

FYI - Seibert got his record in 54 games. This Saturday is game #54 for Ratke.
