If the Dukes get 4 more playoff games, both of those are pretty reachable.

Is Ethan in second or is there more players to surpass?

There are more players to pass on the FBS list. He is in a tie for 18th all time in Career Made Field Goals among D1 kickers. He is currently #11 on the Career FG Percentage list among all D1 kickers. He is #1 in FCS history (knock on wood).

If you’re going to be so condescending and confrontational on here, at least spell our record setting kickers name correctly. Now tell me to get off your lawn.

I fixed it just for you. You can stay on my lawn as a horse jockey.

After watching the NFL yesterday, there are a lot of teams that need a guy like Ratke.

That would be great, but look at the height and distance those guys get. It's like 20 yards more than Ratke. When Ratke hits a 45-yarder, it clears the crossbar by about 5 feet. When an NFL guy hits one, it's halfway up the net. Did you notice the leg on that kick that Viniatieri's nephew at SDSU got? It was nuts. Ratke's awesome, but I'm sorry, that's just not an NFL leg.

His career long is 48, NFL guys typically crush one from that distance with 20 yards to spare. I get it, we love him and appreciate his accomplishments, but taking the homer goggles off will result in realizing he’s a pop gun when they’re looking for something with more bang. Hell, even his own team trotted out the D3 transfer when our season was on the line in the last playoffs.

What?

What was either condescending or confrontational about having a nice meal with Ratkes folks?

Love that part of this big beautiful Country. Big Sky Montana, Wyoming, Utah are hard to imagine until you are actually there.
Seems the horizons and skylines go on forever.

It’s a can’t miss, folks. Take the time to go check it out.

Pretty sure Minn misfits are knocking on that door now.

I was thinking Carolina as well. They got rid of Slye and the kickers they have brought in to replace him have been pretty awful. Santoso was released after the first game and I'll be surprised if they keep Gonzalez. He missed an extra point.
I get that Ratke doesn't have a booming leg, but he does have great accuracy. You can't deny that. Is that enough to get a look in the NFL?
My point was that there are kickers starting in the NFL that absolutely cannot be relied on. Ratke at least deserves a look. He will never be a 60+ yard guy, but I do think he could definitely hit 50+.

Like everything else in sports it is go big or go home these days. You see it in baseball with more HR's, but more strikeouts, more 3's in basketball and the kicking game in the NFL is the same. Need that guy that can hit from 60+ even though he may clunk a few on XP's. I don't think Ratke has a shot because of that. If he was guy that could hit from 50 he would get a look as I am sure the NFL can get him to add a few yards, but he is pretty stretched out in high 40's.

Bingo. He's been here 6 years and his leg strength hasn't really grown and he no longer kicks off. So for a team to take a guy that maxes out in the 40s is a stretch, you have to be able to consistently make them into the 50s and beyond to make it in today's NFL.

The NFL disincentivizes field goals by making a miss turn the ball over to where the ball was kicked from, rather than the previous spot. That makes no sense, but the NFL thinks FGs are boring. So you only ever see long when there's nothing to lose, like at the end of the first half or a desperation kick at the end of the game. And knowing that your real max is 50 yards rather than 60 makes a big difference.

Now, maybe he has the leg for it and just doesn't use it. A benefit of a faster kick is that it can stay on target better in bad winds than a slower one. And I've not seen JMU play in really bad weather for a long time, but that's not been a problem for Ratke. So maybe he just eases up in exchange for accuracy. But if he did, he'd probably have the leg for deeper kickoffs, which it appears he doesn't.

It's also possible with the longer XPs that a higher accuracy rate in exchange for 10 yards of range is a worthwhile tradeoff, but NFL teams just don't stick their necks out like that. It's amazing that a game that's so evenly matched is so incredibly unwilling to think outside the box.

Not making a case that Ratke will make it in the NFL but there are and have been many NFL FG kickers that don't kickoff.

True, but they all kicked off regularly in college and probably in the pros for a bit as well. Ethan hasn't kicked off since 2017. So the 3 parts of a kickers game are short range kicks where he masters, long range kicks where he is limited/challenged and kickoffs which he doesn't even attempt. In his career he's made 78 FGs with 61 of them inside of 39 yards, and 33 of those inside 29 yards as well; his accuracy is fantastic but when most of your kicks are chip shots the road to the next step will be extremely difficult. It can happen though, somebody like Robbie Gould was never projected to have an NFL career either, his leg wasn't that strong but he worked on it and has carved out quite a career.

I agree that Ratke would be a long shot in the NFL so I am not sure why you quoted me and conveniently left off the first part of my statement. With the large rosters in college I would bet there are a significant number of FG kickers that do not kick off.

Simple, your comment was 2 parts, I was only addressing your thoughts on the part I quoted.

Robbie Gould is a great example as a comparison as he was an under 55 yard guy for the most part, but inside 45 he was as automatic as it got. Ratke needs to add 7-10 yards to his distance to really be in the conversation. Not impossible, but unlikely at this point.

NFL kickers get cut for missing kicks. Ratke’s accuracy the last few seasons has been amazing. He will get a look!

Accuracy is incredibly important in the NFL, but if you can't kick 50+ FGs, you have no chance.

Love Ratke, but he has no shot

Agreed, but more like >60. There are high schools out there these days kicking 60+ (in t-shirts).

NFL teams are only carrying one kicker. They have to be automatic from 45 yards and also able to line up for the 55+ yarder with some degree of confidence. You can't have a kicker by committee approach like a college team carrying 4+ kickers.

Based on what a close friend or relative(?) said on facebook, that he is good from 53, the only looks he will get is at JMU's pro day.
