With CBS speculating a move to the AAC, How do the Blazers stack up?
https://www.cbssports.com/college-footba...alignment/

Apparently to this article UAB is on the short list

"In reaction to the Big 12's recent raid of Cincinnati, Houston and UCF, the AAC has focused on recruiting a group of schools that includes Air Force, Boise State, Colorado State, San Diego State and UAB, sources tell CBS Sports. UAB, a member of Conference USA, is the only non-Mountain West team on that short list.

That suggests AAC commissioner Mike Aresco could be looking mostly West in search of equal television value for the three prize pieces he lost to the Big 12.

Boise State and UAB have been discussed most prominently among the five expansion candidates. Inclusion of any or all of the four aforementioned Mountain West candidates could destabilize that league to the point the that the AAC would remain the clear top conference in the Group of Five.

It is believed the AAC will expand by at least four teams to get to 12 members. It only had 11 prior to the departures of Cincinnati, Houston and UCF, which will occur in 2023.

UAB lies in a college football hot bed (Birmingham, Alabama) with a new field (Protective Stadium, Oct. 2 vs. Liberty). The AAC is selling Boise State based on the potential to be the league's most powerful program, one that could chase a playoff spot each year based on the structure of the proposed 12-team playoff."

This is a rarity. Nobody beats Westernblazer to the scoop usually.

Smaugs thread is already going down the what could be bad scenarios path. Let's direct this on to a discussion on how UAB will fit in the AAC once the official announcement comes. And it is coming (barring a major upset).

So here's the question? Once the Blazers make the jump to the AAC, how does UAB match up? Football wise? Basketball wise? Institution wise?

When I read Boise State and Air Force were also on AAC's short list I got that excited feeling you used to get when you were a child about to get that new Nintendo game or whatever. If we end up in a conference where we get to play them every couple of years in football, with the addition of Navy it's about the perfect conference personally for me. Battle for the Bones will be nice to start back up, although I hate Memphis. All my favorite G5 teams with the exception of Fresno State. Now I just wish they would hurry up and invite us.

Good to hear. Wonder what the timing is?

I think UAB should be no worse than middle of the pack in both football and basketball. It may take us a little bit to catch up budget wise, but I think we compete from Day 1. Protective will be on the nicest stadiums in the conference. Bartow could use an upgrade. Institutionally it's a good fit - UAB was ranked #148 in the recent US News & World Report ranking which is in the upper half of AAC schools.

What's hilarious is that not even a week ago Dodd gave a list of schools that he had heard the AAC were interested in and UAB wasn't one of the schools. The new WJOX morning show ripped Dodd a new one.

If you are referring to this article, https://www.cbssports.com/college-footba...structure/ he said it was just an educated guess. Today's article says "sources tell CBS Sports."

The WJOX called him out because they thought how could you say a North Texas would be a choice and not UAB? Could have slipped his mind, who knows. Just pointing out that's why JOX called him out on it whether it was just him guessing or not.

Oh this was a live interview... I surely missed it.

Institutionally we'd already fit right in. For football and men's basketball, I think we'd be firmly decent on day one. When the new resources and exposure bear fruit we will really start climbing.

There are some teams in this scenario who'd kick our ass if we played today, but then there are some whose ass we'd kick.

That said, there's nobody who'd kick our ass today that I think we couldn't return the favor to in a couple of years.

UAB is clearly behind the three departing in football -- UCF, Houston and Cincinnati. They have separated themselves from the G5 and have been rolling for a few years. They earned that Big 12 invite by being Big 12 good the last few years.

After them, we fit right in and I think we'll be competitive from the jump. Tulane game will be a good measuring stick, although this year to me they look better than middle of the pack AAC. They look like they can contend.

SMU, USF, ECU, Tulsa -- we were competitive with them before so no reason we can't be now. Yeah, they've been in the AAC making more money and recruiting at a higher level. But now we have facilities and a winning culture. We never had that before. I think we'll validate their choice pretty quickly.

Basketball, we'll be one of the better teams from Day 1. Andy with a better league to recruit to? Watch out.

Rest of our sports will need to raise their games. All the work Mark Ingram and team have done to improve facilities has us ready to do that.
