Any school with "christian" in it's name will make the PAC12 schools recoil like a vampire to a crucifix.

And I'm sorry, I just can't see Houston rubbing elbows with Stanford or Berkley people.

I don't think the PAC-12 has ever had an issue with a school like TCU that has only historic ties to its founding denomination and is run as a secular, high-quality institution. TCU nor SMU would draw any objection from the PAC on the basis of their religious connections.

Their problem was with BYU, which is a very different animal than TCU in terms of church governance and having theologically-driven programs, even though BYU is also a high-quality institution otherwise.

Agreed, TCUs PAC 12 problem is more around institutional profile; i.e. TCU is more undergrad teaching focused vs. research. We have improved greatly over the last 10 years in research production but are still not Tier 1 in research production.

TCU lacks many of the programs that drive heavy external research grant dollars such as agriculture, PhD level engineering programs (TCU is basically only undergrad engineering), and medicine (TCU did recently start a joint venture type med school with University of North Texas Health Science Center, but i'm not entirely sure how that research activity will end up getting counted in the future).

TCU is pretty secular and while 3 hours of religion is required to graduate that can be fulfilled by courses on Judaism, Islam, world religion broadly, the intersect of religion and science, religion and art, religion and other sociology topics. TCU does not require any bible based course work and/or attendance to things like chapel (like Baylor does).

It's only a matter of time until the PAC *has* to go East or be left behind.

Houston and Dallas are the best and most logical targets for that expansion.

I know for a fact that the PAC and UH have been in contact about this since 2010~.

Me personally I prefer the current Big 12, but the current Big 12 may not be around much longer, so if the PAC comes calling you have to answer.

We will see if it's Tech or TCU who gets the other nod. That feels like a potayto-potahto situation.

I think the PAC may have waited too long to pull the trigger on a (possible) TCU/UH offer. Now that UH is in the B12, the PAC will REALLY have to up the ante to get either TCU and UH to jump, and neither school is going to jump to a downward sloping lateral move. However, signs of instability in the B12 may change that.

Personally I think the PAC blew their chance, but stranger things have happened, but it's head scratching how the PAC is just standing around while the college football world is shaking all around.

They're standing around because... in a nutshell, they can. The PAC is insulated. There's no real threat to their existence.

The real kicker will be that their new TV deal is set for 2024. If their TV deal blows the Big 12 away, it will be VERY tempting for UH/TCU/whoever to leave.

I agree with some of you ^^^

Who really knows what other pending movements are still up in the air but if the Big12 remains idled and the new tv deal remains solid I think Houston should stay put.

I’ve always favored Houston in The PAC but with so much expansion being discussed, nearly every conference has become so unstable now.

As long as no other Big XII school leaves, everything should be fine. Besides, I think Houston should stay put in this league. I like being with our fellow former SWC schools.

If nearly means two drunks in a bar thought and rambled on about it means nearly, you could be right.

The PAC really needs for USC to get this coaching hire right and be back as a national contender by the time the contract is being negotiated. They only have two brand names that draw a national audience: USC and Oregon. If USC is truly back and drawing big eyeballs, that will help them tremendously. Otherwise, they are going to come in with the fifth best deal behind ours.

Let me add that the current BIG TV deal with fox expires after next season . Meaning they need to have a new tv agreement in place by July next year that kicks in 2023. Essentially, it’s too late to add USC in time for the new deal.

The pac12 conference will not expand as long as USC is still in the fold. Moreover, during their expansion exploration in August, they met with their media consultants who gave them some ball park figures on what the expected range of their next deal, along with estimated revenue from playing in the alliance. They chose not to expand.

Expansion among the A5 conference is done until 2036 when the ACC GOR expires.
