No, games against 2.0 Texas schools would find their way onto ESPN or a Fox network, and Houston would be ranked here and there with QB's like Case Keenam, so they were worth the hassle.

And the irony is, Marshall probably voted for UTEP's entry into CUSA over LA Tech's back in 2005. I guess we can now put you down for a case of "Buyers Remorse"? 03-lmfao

We had no vote on the 2005 additions because we were one of them. We joined the league the same time as UCF, UTEP, Tulsa, SMU, and Rice - and the geographic footprint of our division in 2.0 was actually larger.

Serious question: So, why was Marshall left behind? I mean, Houston has jumped two conferences now, all the way to the Big XII. TCU did the same earlier.

If it goes that way then WKU and Louisiana Tech will be a good base to build from. However, I seriously doubt that CUSA teams will pay the exit fee to play on Tuesday and Wednesday night verse Sunbelt teams. If they're stupid enough to do that, then good riddance.

I PROMISE you, Marshall will accept an invite to the AAC or the Sunbelt by the end of September. UAB, USM and ODU (to my disdain) are also reportedly tied to us, being sold as a package deal, aka we're going to the sunbelt or the AAC together. IMO either conference those schools join will end up being the better league between the two.

Your theory does not work. UAB will get the AAC call. After that it is unlikely the AAC agrees to all three of the others-- maybe none of those three.

If the SBC is the conference of your dreams you sure have low sights. C-USA can be fixed.

there is no package deal. i can assure you that UAB is not refusing to go to the AAC over the exclusion of USM. I can also assure you that both USM and ODU would accept offers from the AAC without the inclusion of the others. your post is total BS

We got what we deserved. We made poor coaching decisions twice and held on to both of them for too long.

That's just the most recent stuff. We screwed up by not finding a way to make the football only invite to CUSA 1.0 work out.

At the end of the day, poor timing on our part, much like So Miss today. If this realignment stuff had started back in the 1990s then So Miss would be the ones going to the Big 12.

Yeah, but the money was good enough then to overlook it. Going from 2M per team to 200k per team for just TV revenue alone is a big hit. I know the money is a little better now, but not like it was. Most times the team that traveled lost the game between here and Texas schools. Houston beat us there all the time and we here, same with Rice, and SMU, and UTEP. Some exceptions, of course. It is enough distance to affect team performance, especially on night before the game flights or so it seemed. And like Banker said, we never felt connected to them nor they to us I imagine.

Then why hasn't it been fixed while we did have all of these teams before any of the best of the conference leave? It can't be fixed because CUSA spurned ESPN and can never get them back and no one else can offer the same exposure for the same or more money. This makes CUSA unattractive to any other team out there and to most in it.

So far “other” is in the lead. Wonder who that could be. Again, this is the worst case scenario —one that tears apart our geography and takes athletic prowess, academics and marketz.

Louisiana Tech
UTEP
FIU
WKU
Middle Tennessee

If that’s what you’re left with, what next for a conference?

IMO if 9 members depart new leadership will be instated.

I don't think AAC is looking at the "package" of the 4 C-USA teams. I think they may take 2 or 3 and those might not always be in the package. Although, in my opinion, SunBelt may take a flyer at the "package", because that is a good package at the SunBelt level. it's not like they can get anything better than that elsewhere.

Sure thing LaCajunsFan. You post the same stupid emojs that he would post. By the way FrankyP/LaCajunsFan would neg rep any poster I would positive rep on the Sunbelt board. That's how obsessed he is with me and Louisiana Tech. It's obvious by the way he's on the CUSA board right now.

I'm pretty sure that's why he neg repped me, and not because of my comment about cryptocurrency no matter how far left he swings politically. You gave me positive rep, and he follows it up with a neg rep.

To answer the question from the OP though, I believe UTEP will be the flagship of CUSA 4.0 as they will have been in the league the longest after the AAC very likely takes UAB, Marshall, Southern Miss, and Rice.

I don't see any Mountain West team going to the AAC. The AAC couldn't lure any of them when they had Central Florida, Cincinnati, and Houston. I find it hard to believe any of them would go now.

With that said, the Mountain West has no reason to expand unless it's to add Gonzaga to complement Hawaii football and even the numbers participating in football and Basketball.

The AAC will take no more than 4 and the Sun Belt wouldn't add more than 2 of which James Madison is likely one of them.

If worse came to worse, you could probably add New Mexico State and Liberty as all-sport members. I'm certain NMSU would rather travel to play basketball with UTEP, UTSA, and North Texas than to play Seattle, Utah Valley, or California Baptist.

Did Marshall fans feel this way about Texas teams in CUSA 2.0?

Seeds of discord were planted in 2013, when CUSA literally bent over backwards to change it's own rules, giving Rice the home designation for the CUSA championship.

Additionally, having the base in Texas doesn't help. Keeping the CUSA basketball tournament in Denton the last few years also adds to the fuel.

Finally, our bowl lineup dramatically favors the western division. Our only P5 bowl matchup plays out west.

With that being said, none of these are tangible reasons to leave. But they pick at you, little by little.

My god, you're petty.

I think deb25 might be on to something. Marshall needs to go ahead and punch out, somewhere. Anywhere, but CUSA. You'll be happier, and the rest of us will be too.

You are completely missing the point. I never said I felt this way, I'm telling you why Eastern based teams like Marshall want to break away from the Texas conglomeration. That was the question, no one wanted your feedback, but yet here you are.

I've seen you enough on these boards, you would start a hissy fit, lose your s*** if this happened to La Tech so don't even start.

The AAC highly values markets, which is why I don't think we will go there this round either.

These decisions were also made in the early 2010s, when Marshall was still trying to show a tangible product. We really didn't come into form until around 2013 and 2014, by then conference realignment already took hold.

The poll is based on the assumption that everyone will be gone when VERSION 4.0 of CUSA happens, except WKU, LaTech and maybe 2 or 3 others when all the dust settles. UAB is pretty much unanimously projected to be gone.

Annapolis, Maryland (home to Navy) only has 40,000 residents while Greenville, North Carolina (home to East Carolina) has 91,000 residents. These aren't large markets. You could inflate the market size by counting the populations of surrounding suburbs, but if we do that for Navy and ECU than doing the same for Huntington, WV and Hattiesburg, MS suddenly inflates those populations to comparable sizes to the AAC's smallest market.

The AAC didn't add East Carolina or Navy for market value. They added them for their brand value. It's the reason why I believe the AAC will give serious consideration to Marshall and Southern Miss. They have a long-established and recognizable brand at the FBS level with a history of winning (albeit, not recently in football for Southern Miss).

I understand, and I appreciate the sentiment. I feel the same but I just don't see us getting the invite over teams that have higher academic standing or large cities. That seems to be the model.

If you add two, no way. If you add four, there is a potential, but even that I just don't know.

Who is attending or watching the games, that needs to be the focus.

However, the AAC believes they can turn anything into a powerhouse given the right market and student attendance.

CUSA tried, and saw it falling on its face. It's is only been until recent years where a couple of our markets are starting to take form. But that's nearly 10 years later. FIU with it's market and student population should be the warning.
