This is a perception question: Regardless of when they start play, do you think some or all of BYU/UCF/Cincinnati/Houston as P5 members today? Did you feel that way about them before? Are you waiting for them to officially join the B12? Or are you waiting to see how they do in the B12?

It won’t feel real to me until that Big 12 patch is on the unis but I’ve felt for a while the top half or so of the American were P5 quality.

Edit: BYU and Boise St too

If Louisville is a P5, then Cincy and Houston are as well.

Long stated that those two were the most P5 like schools not in the P5 in terms of Athletic success, history, academics, support.

BYU also has all the trappings of a P5.

UCF doesn't at this point, just because of it's newness, but has the highest ceiling. Florida can easily support 4 P5's - after all, Texas has 5 currently, not counting Houston. North Carolina has 4 right now as well.

Not really. But let's see how the next 5-10 years plays out.

UCF to me has seemed like a potential P5 school for a while. Maybe the next Miami or Florida St. Those schools came from nothing and became national brands.

RE: Do you think of the Big 12's newest members as P5 schools right now?
Of course. Anybody who watched that scene in Provo on Saturday night as BYU celebrated its Big 12 invitation with a clear W over a ranked P5 Utah would have to come to that conclusion. They were celebrating the "most consequential" week in all of BYU history; Steve Young nearly teared up multiple times about the gargantuan impact of receiving a P5 invite, BYU Sports nation was all over; the students felt it and the campus reverberated. It hasn't been quite that impactful at UCF, Cincinnati or Houston as yet, but the Bearcats will have a similar chance against Notre Dame in a few weeks. The media consultants upping their projections to P5 money levels and the results in this early season have only solidified it.

We now have 69 P5 teams; up from 64-65 just a few weeks ago and that's overall a very good thing for college football. All the predictions of a 4-conference 64-team version and a forever relegation of all G5 schools are/were wrong. G5 schools everywhere have been given hope and even FCS programs dreaming of the big-time as well. I think it was an unintended consequence for UT and the SEC, but their move triggered the events that opened the door to 4 (at least) more schools. It's a good occurrence. Welcome to the new schools!

Not at all.

And if perchance the way the settlement works is that the four new schools play a season or two with Texas and Oklahoma still in the league, then yes, for those seasons I will think of them as "P5" schools.

But once TX and OU are gone, then back to no.

RE: Do you think of the Big 12's newest members as P5 schools right now?
Cincinnati put on a full court press starting with the last realignment in 2010 to gain power conference status in FB.

They could have joined the BE and floundered. Instead they took the BCS upgrade seriously and worked as hard as they can to stay in the game.

The question then to me is if USF tried harder would they be in a P5 today? They are the only one in Big East 2.0 not to make it to a P5 (unless you count UConn but their fall is explicable).

Sour grapes.

I happen to believe the ACC will take UC with WVU for 16 if those schools continue to perform athletically, especially football (even just to weaken the Big 12). I also happen to think PAC12 will get into the CT time zone at some point in the not too distant future, and that may include Houston. So yes, all these schools were already P5 potential, no more so than UCF given what they’ve done recently.

No, the Big 12 lacks the most important thing that every power conference needs: a multitude of state flagships.

The editor of Magic Valley newspaper in Boise area said that Boise State is now the unofficial flagship of Idaho, and Idaho does not have a flagship university. That editor is a graduate from Iowa State. Go figure on that one as there are some love from the academic power house AAU schools' alums want Boise State in.

Alaska
Boise State
Buffalo
UConn.
Delaware
Hawaii
Maine
UMass.
Montana
UNR
New Mexico
North Dakota
URI
South Dakota
Vermont
Wyoming

Those would be flagships.

With the exception of UConn, Nevada and UMass, they are all in states with less than 2 million people. Buffalo is not really a flagship.

On the field other than Clemson, Notre Dame and Oregon I don’t know how many teams in your tier 2 are any better than any of the the soon to be BXII (sans Kansas). There are some weak sisters in that back half of the ACC and PAC12. BXII will be much deeper.

Don’t worry about it man, Cincinnati is in a Autonomous 5 Conference...let others get into the “measuring” contest.....07-coffee3

I'm an old man and remember WVU as an independent playing Cinci, ECU, Temple, etc and being on even terms with them. Also remember Major Harris losing out to Andre Ware from Houston for the Heisman.

And just a few years ago we were at Marshall and a miracle away from a loss. Time and money is all it takes. Given equal circumstances we're all P5.
