Conference Rumors
I’ve heard from some people that CUSA is done. Jeremy has a conference call with the Sun Belt today (ughhh), UAB is going to the AAC, and the rest will be ripped apart by other conferences. There’s no shot for us with AAC because of how horrid we’ve been for a decade. We won’t go anywhere unless CUSA blows up because it’s not worth the buyout fees.

Feels like a decision that will just kill us that much more. There are teams in the Sun Belt I’m fine with playing, but there are other teams I never want to see on our schedule, OOC and especially in conference. Martha used to always say she would never allow our school to be in a conference with Troy because of the damage it would do to our academic reputation. Bennett apparently couldn’t care less, not that he cares about Athletics anyway.

USM missed the boat with the AAC when slackjaw and aunt m said we were fine. Its been all down hill from there. Marshall UAB will be in AAC and we will be in the Sun belt. USM will still suck regardless. The grambling game was a struggle don't let the score fool you.

RE: Conference Rumors
CUSA’s been “done” for 4-5 years now, and I look forward to its demise, however it plays out.

The Sun Belt is honestly where we belong now if you look at all the measurable criteria involved like budgets, facilities, and the sort.

As I’ve said numerous times before, it’s up to us to be successful regardless of what conference we’re in, and let’s face it, anybody not on that last train for the Big 12 is an also-ran anyway at this point. We’re far better off in a league assembled by people who actually own a map.

One anonymously sourced report today has Marshall headed to the Belt as well, along with Old Dominion and also James Madison moving up from FCS. Troy would slide over to the West division with us, so:

East:
JMU
App State
Marshall
ODU
Coastal Carolina
Georgia Southern
Georgia State

West:
USM
USA
Troy
UL
ULM
Ark St
Tx St

if it comes to pass.

In that scenario it leaves Texas St on an island basically as it's closest opponent is ULL which would be a 6 hour drive while ULM is a 7 hour drive. Not too bad for us as we'd have drivable opponents to everyone in the west minus Texas St, and then on the East the drive to Atlanta for Georgia St would be easy. I would take this over our current setup as i have no desire in UTEP, UTSA or the FUs. Also, what would happen to UTA and UALR as those are both members for olympic sports only as they have no football

RE: Conference Rumors
We will not end up in Cusa and that's the most important thing. We need to be playing regional teams that recruits and fans recognize and can travel to as opposed to these crap schools no one cares about and have not heard of. It will save money on travel and generate money with increased ticket sales (so long as we start winning!). It will also make it easier to recruit, believe it or not. Jeremy McClain said he wanted to start scheduling more regional opponents and schools we have history with (if I remember correctly). One way or the other, he will do that. He already has with the Tulane and Troy series.

Looking like the Belt is the answer for us. Id like the AAC but things are moving so much and uncertain with that conference that the Belt is the safe bet and what we are better suited for. Hell, if Memphis goes to the B12, then theres no real reason for us to go to the AAC with all the other former opponents no longer there. Its not worth USM joining, just to match back up with Tulane, ECU and SMU. Simply not worth the move to the AAC with all the other garbage teams scattered about in that conference and the crap replacements they will have join. The SunBelt is in a more stable position. CUSA will likely be dissolved. If the schools have any sense, they will vote to do so and avoid any exit fees. We should be back on our feet in time for the Ms. State games this time around!

This is an overlooked part of the conversation. AAC is easily the higher hope as things stand now, but with 1/4 of its membership, give or take, heading out the door, the ESPN money & other incentives for us to join drop considerably.

Everybody wants to get the old band back together, but that’s simply not happening with most of our old mates already on tour with other groups.

RE: Conference Rumors
Yearly matchups with historic rivals are definitely something we need.

And we can get that by joining a stable conference that doesn’t lose 1/3rd of its membership every few years.

RE: Conference Rumors
Yeah, playing ULM every year is going to excite the fanbase. Can’t wait to go to Texas State. Y’all really think anyone would prefer to play USA over Tulane and Memphis?

Like it or not, Sun Belt is seen by our fanbase as lateral at best or downward at worse (most older fans who have left see it downward because CUSA has historically been above them, even if they aren’t currently). The AAC, even after losing members, is a move up. We’d be clinically insane to not go AAC if offered the opportunity.

“If offered,” which doesn’t appear will be the case unless the AAC is rendered practically unrecognizable from its current state. If that changes, then, yeah, we have a new set of circumstances to consider.

Frankly, the “older fans who have left” can smash their opinions into a great big suppository and promptly put it to use. They gave up their vote when they chose to disengage.

The fans I’m talking to and seeing on message boards & various social media are falling overwhelmingly in the camp of USM being proactive and choosing its own destiny for the first time in nearly 30 years instead of once again waiting on other people’s decisions based on other people’s decisions, only to get left holding our own collective wiener yet again.

At some point, we gotta quit staring at the rear view mirror and start looking through the windshield.
