My question is what teams is he expecting to be in the AAC?

Markets are prevailing, from what I’m hearing. So that narrows down some programs.

FAU
FIU
Charlotte
ODU
Rice
UTSA
JMU
GaSt
UNT

Did you forget UAB, or are you just assuming that's a given? Also, I don't really think Harrisonburg, VA is much of a market. They are over 100 miles away from DC. But yeah, I think that's very good news for us. I'd rather not lose anyone, but just having only 1 school a possibility among 8 others isn't bad.

If you count cows and chickens Harrisonburg is a huge market

But they are included in their farmer's household, so it doesn't increase the household #'s for TV market size.

Harrisonburg VA is a market? I lived 30 minutes north of JMU and local news barely covered them until playoff time.

The point of this gambit would be to extract commitments BEFORE the AAC makes their moves, not after. The hook would be two regionalized divisions with very strong football teams that would compete for a playoff spot, and generate solid attendance and rivals.

The argument is that this would be better than anything the AAC can cobble together with what’s left, especially if SMU is listening to the MWC and and Memphis/Boise are “next” to leave for the Big12.

The window is NOW to do this, not to wait. If it happens, it will happen very soon, and very quickly. If it fails, the AAC will have time to cherry pick the leagues of their best teams in the east… after they first look west and try to get recognizable names from the MWC which I personally feel they will fail at.

I will let you know App is trying to do this, and thinks it’s better for us to stay. Let’s see what happens.

I still think everyone is going to stand pat until the AAC makes its move. If we added these teams before AAC that would be a superior move.

Yes. That would be the norm. Which means the opportunity will be gone. Hence, the wording “gambit”. Only hope for a regional east coast division at that point would be for the AAC to pluck some teams from the MWC and grab a couple of Panama’s wet dream schools from the east… which suck at football compared to other options.

If the damage inflicted by the AAC is limited to a couple of R1’s in the east, the rest of us can revisit the plan. Personally, I think AAC’s western Hail Mary will fail… which is why I’d personally like nothing better than for the SBC and the MWC to destroy CUSA and leave nothing left over here to grab once the AAC casts it gaze back to the east.

agreed, but if AAC decides to go CUSA 4.0, all those schools should still be available anyway. Plus we potentially get addition by subtraction.

30,000 alumni in the DMV (DC Metro area)

all our home football games and a handful of home basketball games are broadcast on DC regional sports network. wonder why that is?

but yea, let's pretend the population of Harrisonburg is all that matters 01-wingedeagle

This is why I think the SB will invite 2 (Marshall and ODU/JMU), wait and see what the AAC does and if they make the mistake of not inviting UAB, the SB invites 2 more (UAB and whichever of the “/“ schools they didn’t invite the first time).

The only local channels is Harrisonburg is WHSV. If you’re trying to claim they don’t cover JMU, that is incorrect. The Charlottesville stations cover us as well, as do the Richmond stations. Maybe you only get DC stations?

I don’t care if they only have an AM station powered by squirrels, how many of the fans will buy ESPN+ and watch games. ESPN knows the answer to that question because it is the one that matters.

I would rather we ask UTSA and USM. But if I had a vote I would be lobbying hard to invite UTSA, UAB, USM, Marshall, FAU and JMU. 16 is a great number right now, and that group is a great mix of markets and program strength.

The only advantage I can see in 16 is that with an 8 game conference schedule it would mean only 1 cross division game per season. In football at least it would almost be like having two completely separate conferences so at that point we could all get our compact regional fantasy lineup.

I don’t like the idea of hardly ever playing cross divisionally.

That's why divisions need to go away. Have a couple of teams you play every year, the rest rotate out each year. That way you play every team every 3 years, play at every school every 4 years. The schedule won’t get stale, players get a chance to play at every school during their tenure. Let the best 2 teams play for the CCG.

You also don’t necessarily need an even amount of teams either but having numbers divisible by 3 or 4 are good for pod play. 12, 15, or 16 teams.

I’m just saying the population isn’t huge in the valley

I lived in Rappahannock County, and looking back I think you’re right it was WJLA and not WHSV.

Don’t get me wrong, I’d love to have JMU on board in this new SBC proposed, I know the physical fan support is strong, I followed JMU fairly well and still do (couldn’t bring myself to support VT or UVA as a local team)

For the last 4-5 years I’ve mentioned JMU/Marshall/App/Ga Southern/Ark St/Troy/USM/Coastal with a few others as being a strong league of we could make it happen. These teams have fans in the stadium and would fill up opposing teams stadiums..

JMU fans fill up the stadium, and it’s a beautiful drive up 81 (or down). In fact 81 through VA until Front Royal is the most beautiful highway in the US.

JMU has plenty of merits, just “market” isn’t one. It’s not Atlanta.

Markets doesn’t drive what we love about CFB either, and the Belt made good adds while I was forced to make up reasons to get up for FIU, Charlotte etc in CUSA.

If App/Coastal/JMU/Marshall/Ga So are 5 of the 7 teams in the east of a future SBC I’m at every away game every year with an easy drive and good destinations to go to with real fans and an actual game day environment. ODU fans are fun and hospitable, so if they come along I’m ok with them too.

If this league happens, I think every team associated will benefit, Herd fans will be in Myrtle in droves and “invade” JMU/App/Ga So with 8-10k minimum

I’ve driven everywhere, spent my childhood summers down in Gonzales, La and Grand Isle, La by the way.

Spring/Fall on 81 in VA is breathtaking, not to mention Skyline Drive/Shenandoah NP > than Blue Ridge Pkwy

Louisiana and La Tech both were in my hopeful future conference, and after seeing the fans go at each other on here from both schools im convinced it would be a must see every season. LT talks a lot of **** and I’m glad Marshall football hasn’t let them cash in on it yet. For what it’s worth, couple season back we had LT at home, it was cold as hell and I was right behind the LT bench, they started mouthing off to the fans and I let em have it pretty good; even had an assistant coach talking **** to our section. Saltiness makes CFB better IMO.
