Frustrated? It’s OK!
Warning: Long Post…

Like many of you, I was disappointed that our beloved Blazers did not have a better showing yesterday or any P5 game under Coach Clark. But I have always had the sentiment that Coach Clark has priorities and beating the P5 school is not higher than winning the conference championship.

To beat an upper P5 school they either have to take you very lightly (which nobody takes UAB lightly any more) or you have to be willing to throw things at them that they are not ready for. Which takes a lot of time in preseason practice and during the game week. I personally believe that Coach Clark wants to win the those games but not at the expense of preparing his team to win the conference. Yesterday I didn’t see anything in the offensive or defensive scheme that would make you think this game got a big amount of attention.

I know it’s frustrating… I chief among them… but Clark has a plan. As fans we just want to be like JSU, App St, Coastal… etc. well if the predictions are true concerning expansion… those schools probably want to be more like UAB.

RE: Frustrated? It’s OK!
Good post.

Coastal ain’t playing Georgia. They are playing Kansas. Louisiana ain’t playing Alabama. They are playing Iowa State.

UCF, Cincinnati and Houston didn’t get to the where they got the past 15 years playing money games at these kinds of teams either. They played good competition but not THAT competition. When they did play those kinds of elite teams, they got trucked too. When they won, it was bowl game neutral site with neutral refs. Funny how that works. Credit to them, they won their share of these games.

The old Georgia, pre Kirby? I think we could have been a lot more competitive. That Georgia took Saturdays off and sometimes played down the competition. This Georgia ain’t that Georgia. I still don’t know if they have the offense to win it all, despite the fact that we made their third QB look like Drew Brees, but they for darn sure have the D and toughness and attention to detail that are required to win it all.

Frustrated? It’s OK!
Great post. I'd add this:

I think we've upped the competition to increase the payout so we're only playing one of these games. I think this is deliberate.

Remember when we use to play two?

Watson remarked on it frequently, basically saying he hated starting 0-2 because we had bills to pay.

Also, for those who think we don't carry any cache, we commanded $1.8 million for our trouble. By contrast JSU got $400K from Free Shoes.

UGA could have scheduled a softer cupcake, but paid through the nose to get us because we DO carry a little swag.

Frankly, I think Clark envisions a day when we're the team writing the checks.

I hope that plan involves playing more disciplined and with less penalties. Because that hasn't seemed to be part of the plan I've seen executed on the field.

We have 21 penalties in 2 games so far. I don't know where we've ranked with that in the last few seasons but it doesn't seem like the trend is positive.

I don't disagree with your statement. If you watch the game on the tele, you could see the frustration on Clark's face as he and Kirby shook hands very..very briefly after the game....more like... dont let me catch you in the streets kind of vibe. I need to rush this week so we can redeem ourselves hopefully next Saturday.

UNT had 125 yards of penalties against SMU yesterday. Could be in for a flag fest Saturday.

That disappointed me as much as anything yesterday... Penalties have been something he has addressed. He's addressed it in his comments on several occasions. He said he can live with penalties from aggressiveness, but some are just composure-related. Now the false starts had a lot to do with 90,000 screaming fans. Even then, that bothered me.

But this man has won 3 division championships in a row, so I am sure he is addressing it.

Does Coach Clark’ comp include a bonus for a top 25 win? If he only gets a bonus for winning conf championship he has more incentive to concentrate on conf games rather than spending time on ranked teams. Seems like we are always unprepared for these type games. Maybe we should incentivize them if they aren’t???

I wanted to win yesterday, too, or at least not look like the pushover we did, but I would not trade a single conference win for one in Athens.

$25,000 - $40,000 for 6-9 Wins
$25,000 for winning Conference USA division title
$25,000 for bowl selection
$25,000 for bowl-game victory
$25,000 for win over Power 5 win
$25,000 for final top 25 ranking
$35,000 for being named Conference USA or AFCA Regional Coach of the Year
$50,000 for winning the Conference USA championship game
$50,000 for being named national coach of the year
$100,000 for CFP Bowl or Playoff Appearance
$100,000 for CFP Championship Game
$250,000 Win National Championship

+other academic bonuses

Saying that, you could make his bonus $1,000,000 for winning a game over a Power 5 team and he probably wouldn't change his approach. Don't that would drive him.

I know you are a strong Blazer fan and we all want to win our conference and aim for the goals we want to achieve. So I understand the sentiment you are going for here...but I'm not buying it lol

It is absolutely insane to say you would trade a road win against a #2 nationally television game on ESPN in front of 92,000 against us....for a win against UTEP. There isn't a single person in our Athletic Department or Coaching Staff that wouldn't do the same if they could. However, that situation is as hypothetical as a Georgia win this year to begin with.

If it meant the difference between hoisting the conference championship trophy and not, yes, I'd rather beat UTEP than UGA.

RE: Frustrated? It’s OK!
…the only 'down' side to this one (other than the loss itself, duh) was it was EARLY in the season... typically not a bad thing, as you shake it off and regroup (which we will) - but THIS particular year, I wish this one would have been a November game, as it puts JUST a bit of 'tarnish' on the Grand Opening of Protective in a few weeks... (BTW, what is our 'nickname' for the new place?) …hopefully the media doesn't dwell on it and we rebound well - victories against UNT and Tulane wouldn't erase this one, but at least they would make it more of an 'outlier' (sounds like some creative excuse terminology there, but... 03-drunk)

No shock here. Smaug's view also represents the BOT. They would be ecstatic with UAB getting pummelled by P5 teams and just have UAB winning CUSA/diminshed AAC championships. That's would be the preferred ceiling for UAB in the BOT eyes.

Good lord, let's stop it with the either/or.

Let's do both.

We aint' ready to do it against Georgia. Kinda figuring South Carolina ain't either, or Vandy, or Arkansas, or Kentucky, or ...

We need to get into the American where we're be able to schedule a little better and maybe even get a few of those teams to come to Protective.

And by scheduling, I mean some more reasonable P5 opportunities.

To make the math work on that, to move away from the $1.8 million paydays, it requires fans giving more money and buying more tickets.

Who's in?

RE: Frustrated? It’s OK!
I just looked at UCF's schedules over the last decade. They didn't take their team into places like Georgia, Alabama, Clemson. Their power 5 opponents were teams like Georgia Tech, Maryland, NC State, Pitt. They got smoked by 41 points at Michigan. They did go 1-1 against Penn State at a time when Penn State was pretty bad due to the scandal. But those were big games in UCF's development.

We need to look at P5 scheduling that way, which is not easy to do in our current situation for a lot of reasons.

Yes indeed. Astonishing to read ignorant comments such as Smaugs. How will we ever elevate this program with fans that think like that? A small time mindset satisfied with small time achievements.

These are the people that would be happy with 15,000 REAL fans in the stands. SMFH. Nauseating.
