Let's do both.

We aint' ready to do it against Georgia. Kinda figuring South Carolina ain't either, or Vandy, or Arkansas, or Kentucky, or ...

We need to get into the American where we're be able to schedule a little better and maybe even get a few of those teams to come to Protective.

And by scheduling, I mean some more reasonable P5 opportunities.

To make the math work on that, to move away from the $1.8 million paydays, it requires fans giving more money and buying more tickets.

Who's in?

Bingo!

Good ideas but that's preaching to the choir here. You can only squeeze your core of fans so much. They've already been asked to do a lot. At some point the fan base must grow in order to grow donations and ticket sales. So that means convincing people that aren't already fans. Winning CUSA games and titles won't get that done. It's up to UAB to win games that change public perception of the program.

Nail. Head. Winning conference championships is cool, but let’s be honest, there are significantly more people that watched that game Saturday than there will be for the C-USA championship game, whether we’re playing in it or not. This program (and I think a majority of this fanbase to a degree) is fine with C-USA championships, OOC game results be damned. We won’t expand the base until we start winning quality OOC games. And they don’t have to be the Georgias of the world. Many of the bigger G5 schools have just beat lower to mid-tier P5 schools.

Yes it gets a little annoying when you ask why things are a certain way a popular response is if you want things to change give more money.

Want to see less 15 yd penalties, give more money. Tired of playing body bag games, give more money. Wanna know why we can't schedule winnable P5 games, give more money.

There is good evidence that MONEY can cure many Athletic Department ills. For its first two decades, UAB FB operated "on the cheap" -- no FB only facilities at all - old pr reconditioned - and fans were not pleased with that result. I don't think it mere coincidence that the first new FB facility in almost 30 years came with the program's most successful records. Money pays for the facilities that enable coaches to recruit better players which lead to better seasonal records and maybe conference upgrades. While UAB can't match the annual income of $130 million to $150 million of the P5 power's Athletic Departments in our state, the lesson is still "written on the wall".MONEY decides success.

Clark won without the facilities. By all accounts he had one of our best recruiting classes ever coming in when we shut down. Like most things in life, money helps, but it alone wouldn’t have made callaway or McGee a better coach somehow.

I was going to post some other CUSA P5 opponents since Clark was hired but it's clear that MTSU and WKU has been able to get middle of the road P5 programs to play them and even in a few cases were able to get them at home. I'm also pretty sure MTSU and WKU is in a similar financial situation as UAB. So I don't quite understand why UAB needs to be in the AAC to do this. And again, it's not for certain UAB is going to get the same payout the current AAC teams are getting. Matter fact it will probably be far less but a little more than what UAB gets in CUSA.

I've been saying the same thing. Why can we not get a P5 program at home? A lot of schools with less money than us have been able to. Even a top flight mid major at home would be nice. Hell, Troy had Boise at home a couple of years ago. Yes, we had Louisiana at home last year and Liberty at home this year, but they weren't established when we scheduled them. If it takes doing a two for one or even a three for one to get an Arkansas or a Miss St or a Louisville at home, let's do it.

RE: Frustrated? It’s OK!
One of the few downsides of playing less payday games is that players and coaches simply lack the experience of playing in that environment. Did I expect to beat Georgia? No not really. What I did expect is to take the fight to them. We looked comically bad at times. We can wring our hands about money, conference affiliations, attendance or what ever but none of those prevent a team full of upper classmen from just lining up in position. Guys, just go play ball. It's not plasma physics and coaches shouldn't make it such. Georgia put 11 on the field at a time just like JSU. Clearly those JSU guys aren't that bad either.

I can't argue against needing the $1.8 million but as a fan base and donors we need to step up so we don't have to take chances like this unless it's on neutral turf and it's a game that fit's our profile.

The easy answer is Legion Field. No one has wanted to play there in about 15 years. ADs of the other schools have to answer to their fans, too. Toxic waste dump or I am gonna have to watch the game on Facebook? No thanks.

There was a time early in UAB football when Legion Field made it possible to get a Kansas or Va Tech. That time ended by the early 2000s. It isn’t coincidence that UAB hasn’t hosted a P5 opponent since Mississippi State in 2011. Dreadful game, dreadful venue, crowd generously announced at 28,000 of which more than half were MSU fans, broadcast to the nation on TBS. No P5 AD is gonna take his team to that environment if he/she has other options

It will get better at Protective.

FBHC Clark had one season with the old facilities and even with 13 JUCO recruits (including his QB) he went 6-6. Two years later - after The Return - with the new facilities to show the recruits, he was able to start winning big. Clark is a great coach and would have exceeded McGee's 5-19, but that is a very low bar. UAB needs to keep on building facilities for football and raising the serious MONEY (as in several TENS of millions dollars) needed to gain the attention of desired conferences..

I agree. I expected us to make a game of it. I don’t have a problem playing a top ten program or any SEC school that is willing to pay big money. It seems to me that our players and recruits would want to play a Georgia or Florida rather than a Duke or Kansas. Beating cupcakes tells us nothing about our team.

But it doesn't look like our guys are gaining anything from playing these games except the big paycheck. Our players still play like it's the first time going up against this type of talent.

Proper preparation prevents poor performance. This one was on the coaches.

It's been on the coaches since Clark's been here because it's a clear recurring theme. I can't wait until we don't have to play these body bag games anymore bc the staff obviously doesn't care, we get routinely embarrassed on national TV, and our team looks scared and smalltime. I'm tired of it.

And as much as we want to see UAB shine in the national spotlight, it's never good to see your program get embarrassed in front of the nation. It doesn't help recruiting potential students to the school or with football recruiting.

Just to clarify most fans are just saying what the AD and the coach are saying...they are the ones saying that we need the body bag games. Yes other schools don't play the body bag games like we do and play a more manageable P5 opponents but its HBC and the AD that says we need them so maybe take it up with them why we have to be embarrassed like we were on Saturday and get a better answer cause you aren't gonna find what you are looking for here.

As I said in another thread, this seems to be a problem specific to these type games. Unfortunately we're trying to go up in competition with a new conference affiliation and the games aren't going to get any easier. If you have aspirations of NY6 bowls or playoffs down the road you can't fold like a cheap suit every time a ranked P5 team is across the field. I actually want to see more of these games (ok maybe not Georgia level) just to get it in everyone's head that yes you do belong. It's still just football
