RE: 2021 Bengals
Burrow has been kind of terrible today but honestly nothing matters until the Bengals move in from Taylor who is just in over his head.

The most valuable asset in the NFL is a good qb on his rookie contract. If your coach isn't good enough you have to move quickly, which is the exact opposite of what this franchise does. I don't think this is a good team but I'd be looking to replace Taylor by mid season for anything less than 4-4. But I also recognize it was an insane hire from day 1 so that influences my opinion.

O-line is still not good. Too many sacks and can't pass protect long enough for down field throws. 69 rushing yards. 3.5 YPC today. Scuttlebutt on twitter saying Burrow and Chase were questioning the play calling.

Meh...aided by a 32 yd PI call. It's still early. They don't seem to be putting too much pressure or blitzing him yet. That will change. What's more concerning is after 2 weeks, Eli Apple seems to be the whipping boy in the Bengals secondary.

Yeah Apple is not impressing so far. Of course, it would be nice if our $42M man, Trae Waynes, would you know, actually play a game. He's missed what, 18 out of 18 since we signed him?

I doubt Joe says anything much publicly but Chase seemed upset that we didn't call any deep passes until very late in the game. He's got a point but it's tough to do when the OL can't pass block sufficiently. To me a lot of it seemed to be missed assignments or miscommunication rather than them getting overpowered. And as many good things as Burrow has done, I think he's still a little skittish back there as far as avoiding the rush and scrambling to open areas.

It's very frustrating and disappointing. As lousy as they were for most of the game, if Hendrickson makes that tackle on Fields and forces the Bears to punt, I was very confident the Bengals would at least tie it up if not win it in regulation.

Next up is the Steelers and the Bengals are going to have to keep their cool despite the usual shenanigans.

RE: 2021 Bengals

That is so stunningly pathetic. Zac Taylor is Dave Shula, without the family pedigree. He didn't have the resume of an NFL head coach. It's debatable whether he had the resume of an NFL coordinator. He's in so far over his head. The offense is predictable and too often abysmal despite good talent. He should be fired yesterday.

RE: 2021 Bengals
i'm no fan, when has he had the talent to succeed? all the games they lost last year were pretty close, like one score or so. but yeah, could eric b be any worse? hopefully he ends up at usc which would stave off some dominoes

RE: 2021 Bengals
What sucks is the Bengals front office actually appears to have done a really good job this offseason. Burrow's been sacked too much, but the actual pressure numbers are way down. The line is significantly improved and the pieces they've added on defense have paid immediate dividends.

The offense is just horribly coached. No creativity, backward mindset, they run on first down more than anyone, they run on 2nd and long more than anyone, they put the offense is terrible situations and don't play call for advantageous situations. They are bad.

RE: 2021 Bengals
Today confirmed what I have said for a couple year— Big Ben should have retired after 2019. He is too old, he is not as mobile and does not have the arm he once had. By not retiring, he prevented the Steeler front office from bringing In someone else to take over the reigns. Oh well, that’s their problem and good for the Bengals.

Yeah you could make the case that it's time for a changing of the guard. But based upon the game today, he certainly doesn't look like the problem. For example, based upon past experience I fully expected the Steelers to get a TD in their final drive to pull within seven. But they literally dropped 3 straight passes iirc and turned the ball over on downs iirc. Ben is obviously older and peaked much higher but his current status kind of reminds me of the Dalton situation with the Bengals. Neither is "the problem" but we were and they are ripe for a change imo.

Speaking of the Bengals, their draft is looking a heck of a lot better than it did in the preseason. Chase is a true weapon. If they are all healthy I really believe he, Boyd and Tee can match up with any WR threesome in football. And Chase and Tee in particular stand to just get better and better over the next few years.

We'll see how Carmen grades out, but he seemed pretty solid to me on the plays I got to follow him on. Unless I missed something he had only one penalty, a false start. I can live with that from a rookie playing making his first start at a position he never played before. Pretty amazing that this Bengals OL is the one that ended the Steelers NFL record of consecutive games with at least one sack.

Semi big showdown this week between the last 2 #1 picks. Hopefully, the weather will be nice Thursday and PBS is rocking. Maybe the schedule hasn't been a killer but if they can get to 3-1 that qualifies as a good start to the season imo.

RE: 2021 Bengals
I know the defense is probably tired from playing a ton of snaps on Sunday with a quick turnaround, but damn... this is embarrassing so far. I didn't expect more than 7-8 wins this season anyway, but if you're going to contend for a playoff spot, these are the kinds of games you're supposed to win. We're not at that point yet, and I'm still unsure if Taylor is the right guy to lead this franchise.

The Bengals could be good if Zac Taylor was at all competent. He somehow failed upward into this job and we have seen so many offensive halves like this since he took it.

Zac Taylor is a poor man's Kliff Kingsbury, who is a poor man's Sean McVay. No bueno. We need to fire this guy as soon as the season ends and put the full-court press on hiring Joe Brady. I know he hasn't been a head coach, but he obviously has incredible chemistry with Joe Burrow and is one of the brightest offensive minds in the game (which I think the Bengals thought they were getting with Taylor).

RE: 2021 Bengals
That TD play reminds me of UC's staple TE play.

Bengals have some players. Chase is going to be incredible. Good to strike quickly early in the half.
