NC State and FSU
Talk about coming back down to earth.

Both teams received rave reviews last week but buckets of cold water yesterday. After dusting USF 45-0 last week, some were calling the Pack a dark horse ACC title candidate. They were dominated by a lightly-regarded Mississippi State team yesterday.

And FSU earned numerous The Noles Are Back kudos after their moral victory vs Notre Dame. They lost a game for the ages to an FCS team.

So were both overhyped, or were these results aberrations?

I think the Pack rebounds. Not sure about FSU.

RE: NC State and FSU
The loss at Mississippi State is not that bad. ESPN FPI has the Bulldogs at #32 and Mike Leach is a good coach. NC State should be OK.

FSU has lost two close games, but their upcoming schedule helps them out. Four of there next five are manageable…against Wake Forest, Louisville, Syracuse and UMass (only the Oct 9 game at UNC seems out of reach). Norvell needs to win in the next few weeks, because the last 5 games of the season will be horrible.

When you lose to an fcs team, you could lose all of those next 4 games or you can win them all, with many other possibilities in between. But nothing is a given when you lose to an fcs team. But so far, this has been a strange football season. No telling what is going to happen going forward.

RE: NC State and FSU
It’s actually the ACC and Swofford’s fault that FSU lost to an FCS team.

So what you're saying is, that it's UNC's fault that NCSU lost.

Yeah, FSU’s loss is bad. Just suggesting that it’s not yet a dump fire. The team (and Norvell) still has an opportunity to right the ship.

There comes a time in a football season when it's time to start thinking about men's basketball season. For quite a few ACC schools, that time has already come...

So what happens when they lose in the ACC/B1G Challenge? Will it be time to think of baseball?

It was just one game and I don’t think anyone expected the wolfpack would win all of the road games.

FSU does look bad.

Losing to Big Ten teams in men's basketball isn't embarrassing. Unless it's to Nebraska. Rimshot

I think the Pack renounds. Not sure about FSU.

There is no frame of reference to evaluate Week 1 performance. Maybe if Notre Dame's game against Toledo had been the Week 1 game and against FSU the Week 2 game we wouldn't have been so high on the Noles win over the Irish.

Someone speculated that FCS teams that played a Spring schedule may have come into this season with an advantage. They already have 8 FBS wins.

But I wonder about Florida State's effort. Were they just phoning it in against Jax State? If so, that's on Norvell, and he'd better improve on the discipline and fast.

That's a good point about FCS and the spring.

Only 3 of those 8 wins are against Power 5 opponents and one was vs. Vanderbilt and while it was an upset no one expects Vanderbilt to be a good team. Expectations are (or should be) higher at Florida State. FSU was 26-0 vs. FCS teams before yesterday (stat courtesy of ESPN: https://www.espn.com/college-football/st...ceptable). And how do you lose on a Hail Mary "all or nothing" play where all you have to do is stop them from scoring a touchdown? And is Jacksonville State even a good team? Are they North Dakota State or are they do better than Wilkes University?

Like it or not, you lose a game like this and you deserve to hear the b-word.

The ACC grabbed a couple nice pelts this past weekend. SEC and Big 10. So um thanks?

Jacksonville State is a very good team and has been to the fcs playoffs at least 4 times since 2014. Their coach is like 66-22 or something like that. They are in Jacksonville Alabama, not Florida.

The current UAB coach, Bill Clark, came from Jacksonville State after being a very successful high school coach in Alabama.

Clark was 11 - 4 in his one year at Jacksonville State before taking on the job of restarting the UAB program, where he's done very well.

Incidentally, UAB beat Jacksonville State this year 31 - 0.

"Only 3 wins against P5 teams"? FCS are 3-32 after only two weeks vs the P5 and the G5 + non-P5 indies are 7-39. They are beating the P5 at almost twice the rate they achieved over the past 8 years.
