Don’t bury the lead…this is a bad football team and in year 4 of Bloom. Houston is not a great team. They are an average football team and not as good as prior years. Looking around results of others that are improved in C-USA..over/under on Rice wins is going to be 4.5.

Pros
Rice plays TSU after Texas. They lost by 60 to Baylor tonight.

May be in minority but D is improved compared to prior D’s of the past 10-years. Yes, long 3rd-downs were horrible tonight but overall, the tackling and swarming to the ball is improved. The fact that offense can’t move the ball and they are on the field for most of the game (stat sheet misleading due to Bloom’s late in game antics) is not all of their fault.

A bit of a reach for a pro..but did like the play action on third and short in the 1H with the ‘heavy’ personnel in. Run that same play against Arkansas last week on 4th down in red zone (vs Myers getting stuffed) and maybe a different outcome for that game.

Cons
McCaffrey is at this third school for a reason and only reason he is at Rice is due to a personal connection. He is the teachers pet, not the answer. Jovani is one-dimensional and can’t throw. Green makes a nice play but on next one seems to turn the ball over and/or trip over his feet. Thus with no good/consistent QB play, it is difficult to win FBS games. Theme for the Bloom era and common theme of DB era sans CC and McH. Good QB’s can win games and average/bad QB’s don’t win games against decent competition. I want to apologize to D. Jackson from years ago. I was critical of him compared to CC and McH era but he now looks like a rock star compared to what has followed him since his departure.

OL was horrible. Really poor execution of pass protection schemes against common defensive stunts/alignments. McCaffrey running for his life on non-blitz situations.

Play calling…especially in 2H which was playing to avoid getting blown-out vs. playing to win. Gotta believe the play calling is a function of not having talent around McCaffrey to make plays. Yes..a couple injuries but now in year 4 of the program..need more depth than Pitre and Rozner to make plays.

Defensive schemes and execution on third and long. Breakdowns in both man and zone coverages on basic route combos being run by Houston receivers. 101 stuff, not grad-level stuff that Coogs were running.

Special Teams. Yikes. Regressed.

Was not at game but compared to prior Bayou Bucket games at HRS, attendance looked disappointing.

To earlier post about Stadium Club being empty in the 4Q…expect more apathy for remainder of year. Why would one come back? Apathy will be in full effect.

I will be betting any line that is < 35 points for next week. Horns and Sark will need a punching bag to take frustrations out on.

The Stadium Club was only sparsely populated at the beginning of the game. Smallest group I've EVER seen up there.

The athletic dept quietly reduced the number of R room/ Stadium Club passes per giving level and season ticket. With no announcement or explanation, I was sent half the number of passes I was sent last year.

Ouch. It was still time to move on from Bailiff, but Bloomgren obviously was not the correct answer to the question.

I do think he is really intelligent football guy, maybe the most intelligent Rice coach since Jerry Berndt. But plenty of examples of smart people not being able to be effective people and lead. Sometimes those are different things. I think this is one of those cases.

Given his broad experience, Stanford success, and NFL exposure...probably unlikely to put much credence in anyone from Rice to talk to him about football. He views himself as the expert. Probably much easier to blame Rice and things around Rice (vs. himself/staff) for this situation given his high confidence in his knowledge about the game (i.e., my stuff worked at other places, doesn't work here..must be the place, not the person/system).

As has been discussed on other threads, he fits in the NFL or OC at a P5 school that wants a hard-nosed offensive scheme. Rice has different leadership needs given this unique situation. Square peg in round hole at Rice. This situation right now is a lose/lose for both Rice and Bloom. But I think it will end better for Bloom than it does for Rice.

Social distancing guidelines I suspect from the campus. The press box was limited as well (although that won't be a problem the rest of the year).

RE: Rice/UH post-game thread
I’ve been told that barring something like a winless season, it’s a 100% certainty that Bloomgren will be back in 2022.

He’s the AD’s guy. He’s executing the AD’s vision for the program. He’s running the Stanford system, recruiting nationwide, and respecting the academic side of things. They are falling back on the Marshall win as “proof” that the results will come, pointing to McCaffrey as the future, and using the 2020 covid year as a lost year that really doesn’t count. So this is essentially year 3 instead of 4 in their eyes. They’re hoping for 6-6 and a bowl game this year but a 3 or 4 win season won’t rock the boat.

That’s why you see Bloomgren in a rather good mood in the postgame even after getting his butt kicked. There’s not a sense of urgency. The AD’s job is safe and thus so is Bloomgren’s.

I watched the first few minutes of his post game presser, and to his credit for improving in some aspect of his professionalism, the first thing out of his mouth in his preamble was essentially "I had no idea we were this unprepared to play Houston. That's not acceptable, and it's my fault it happened." He did say that assistants and players needed improvements, too, but the overall tone was that it's his responsibility to make sure that happens. Much improved messaging over past years where he tended to blame his roster exclusively.

It's not enough to ameliorate the overall failure of his tenure for me. I'd say this is one of the few positive things I could say about the team yesterday.

Rice has just become irrelevant.

Athletically, with possible exception of baseball for the Wayne years, Rice has been irrelevant for over 50 years. Fan base is non-existent, so no advertising prospects on the games, thus no TV coverage and no interest by any relevant league. HRS resonates like the Grand Canyon if there is any noise, which there isn't. If a tree falls in HRS, does anyone hear it, or care? Regular folks in Houston and elsewhere know and care nothing of Rice University as a whole. They have no clue what goes on behind the hedges unless it's a G.H.W. Bush G7 party, nor do they want to know. Rice is sort of the Johns Hopkins of Houston, except there's no med school.

I walked in and they didn’t even bother to scan my season ticket.

Me too, but I arrived late.
But there was still someone at the gate with a scanner.

UNT 43.7%

Western Kentucky 35.1%

Depending on how you crunch the numbers, that projects a 3 to 4 win season. That should not be enough to save Bloomgren.

I crunched the numbers and found 7 games where we have a reasonable expectation to be competitive. (35% or higher win probability).

Win 6 of those 7 and you’re Bowl bound.

Or 5 of those 7 plus upset UAB or UTSA and you’re Bowl bound.

Based on game one that sounds do-able. Based on game two that sounds unlikely.

If Rice doesn't make the AAC, they should forget football. The lack of a real commitment from the admin, and subsequently fewer donation dollars, coupled w a conference affiliation that means zero to the few fans we have makes this a no-win proposition. Throw on top of that the new ILE $, which now makes it Kosher to buy off players, what is the chance the Rice football will ever be relevant?

I remember Rice-TexasU or Rice-LSU at HRS with the stadium full and high school bleachers on the concourses in the end zones to catch the overflow. We've gone from that to this. Think about it.

In 1997 I remember the first two games against Air Force and UT pulling in 50,000+ fans. It is hard to imagine Rice Stadium ever looking that full again (as a percentage of seating).

You can't "forget" football and remain in a decent conference. As much as people demean C-USA, it's a world better than the WAC or MVC, etc

I was not at those games you reference, as I live in North Texas, so listened to them on Broadcast.com. I used to show up late to games on campus as a student due to work reasons. LSU, UT, ATM, Arkansas, etc. The games where Rice pulled in big numbers, such as you reference, were because those teams wanted exposure in the Houston market and their fans would come out to watch them beat up on Rice. No one has to do that now because of cable and satellite TV. They would rather save their sports $$$$ for legitimate games which are important to their teams' playoff future. Games which mean something. Rice is irrelevant.

My son just headed for ACU to do a sports media internship. I was surprised to find they are now in the WAC. Lots of other previous "tier 3 schools" as well. And I'm afraid if Rice went to that conference they'd get their tail beaten. I cannot see much evidence that Rice University legitimately wants to compete in Division 1 football, although they were very happy to accept the $50M football coach endowment.

Hello Rice folk. Long time coog here that skipped my first Bucket game in years primarily because it just wasn’t fun the last two times I’ve been to rice stadium. While the venue is great, the concessions are always a problem, there is little in terms of Rice fan engagement and Rice seems to always triple the prices for the game. It’s just not worth it for a family of five that goes to just about all of the UH games to spend $200 for the experience your athletic department delivers. We hosted a watch party instead for two other families that felt the same.

Concession lines were long again this year. The “sEATz” app is the way to go.

Just make sure you update or install it before heading to the stadium. Took even longer to update the app than waiting in line.

The UH crowd was very down from the past, I suspect this and the loss to Tech (how much did y'all pay for that game?) may have much to do with it.

I think the department reads the Parliament and I know they are working the fan experience (at least they send out polls), so they will see this (or Walt will send it).

This afternoon they sent out a satisfaction questionnaire to anyone who purchased a ticket to the game-- whether season ticket or single game ticket.
