Yeah, I liked winning too, but in 2000-2005, there were a lot of complaints here about boring and predictable offense, after every loss and many wins.

I wasn't here at this site in 2003 (I think it existed but the Rice board was not active?). Anyway, if it did exist, I suspect Rice fans would be complaining we didn't sweep Stanford.

Really? You think our complaints about our recent football record (against the competition) is indicative of how we acted while winning a National Championship? Football is consistently not in the top 100 schools. In 2003, football had recently gone iirc 8-4 against some pretty stiff competition. I don't remember many people complaining about anything except 'not enough bowl tie ins'.

That's a bit hyperbole to be fair. But the point is we have a lot of Doug and Debbie Downers who focus on all the negatives and then just choose to disappear when something good happens.

Yes, football will be 0-3 after this weekend. Who knows, we may win every other game we play in 2021 after that. Will that matter? Probably not. But I truly believe that the negativity is what drives some of our brightest assets away.

Looking back over the last 2+ decades, every one of Jerry Berndt's teams gave up at least 30 points per game. None of Fred's teams did. None of Ken's did, either, through 2002. But 2003-05 gave up, respectively, 31.5, 34.3, and 40.6. Ken's problem wasn't that his offense failed, but that his teams quit playing defense.

TG's one year trimmed the yield to 33.2, then back to 42.9 in Bailiff's first year. Then down to 34.1 in 2008 (Texas Bowl). Back up to 43.1 in 2009, 38.5 in 2010, then down to 33.1 in 2011. Then 2012-14 were 30.5 (Armed Forces Bowl), 24.4 (conference championship and Liberty Bowl), and 28.5 (Hawaii Bowl). Then 35.8, 37.3, and 35.8 as Rice went back down 5-7, 3-9, 1-11. So Bailiff's defenses were up and down, pretty much like his team's records.

The fewer points you give up, the fewer points you need to score to win.

There was a Rice board separate from csnbbs prior to about 2005. It shut down and we migrated over here (records show I joined here 26 Sep 2005).

Well sure. Some people are like my father... you celebrate the win for one day and the next, you go back to fixing all of the errors you made, even when you won. There are even some who never celebrate anything. You could always do better.

As to your final comment, I couldn't disagree more. Its our record that drives some of our brightest assets away. Said differently, if our brightest assets are only getting us to 3-8, maybe we need more polish?? Trust me, a fanbase that is happy with 3-8, especially against mostly weak competition isn't going to attract the 'brightest assets',

I completely agree, but it'd be hard for anyone not to be negative this week.

Can you explain what you mean by brightest assets? Are you referring to student athletes or Parliament posters?

Student athletes, staff, coaches, you name it. But certainly not Parliament posters.

Then I will have to disagree. Negativity on the Parliament is not driving away folks. Lack of on field success and commitment from the University are way bigger factors in anyone leaving/being driven away.

I’m sure UT’s fan board was all peaches and cream this week. With the exodus out of Austin this week due to disgruntled fans expressing their frustrations, any word on whether or not they have enough players and coaches left to play this weekend?

The knock on Rice for years has been that Rice doesn't care about athletics. That's what drives recruits away.

After the results of the last two Saturdays, if there aren't people on here raising hell and calling for change, what does that look like? Like Rice doesn't care? Pretty much.

I think people calling for change is good.

I think people saying Same old Rice, nobody cares, we will probably give up 50 next week - not so good.

Unfortunately, the board is currently dominated by these people who repeat their same old complaints and negativity on an almost daily basis. He has driven many posters to silence, and more than a few have left The Parliament permanently as a result. That's a fact.

RE: Rice/UH post-game thread
If you're arguing for change and change isn't coming... how exactly are our arguments supposed to change?

Jesus, Walt... you're almost literally arguing that some posters should be driven to silence with their unheard/un-acted-upon complaints because it drives other posters into silence.

I mean seriously, I was speaking the other day to a 'high placed member of the administration' and a 'high placed member of the BOT"... The conversation went to concessions and the 'administration' member said the problem was we couldn't get them power.... and when I 'once again' suggested that we invite food trucks onto the concourse... the BOT member chimed in with, 'yeah... why don't we do that?' The Admin's response was, 'I don't know.'

Note that this was BEFORE the UH game... and if they had run out of food like we did, you could have just invited a few more (lots of them talk to each other or have multiple trucks)... and not had to deal with the concern that by the time you cook it and deliver it, that the demand is gone.

I've suggested this solution DIRECTLY to the admin member years ago... like 8, AND 5, AND 3.... and the other day, you would have sworn it was the first time he'd thought of it.

I've also made OTHER solution suggestions, like 'alternative power' which could even be portable (and topical) and involve students... or facilities upgrades that would involve/appeal to other groups beyond football... even a few with zero interest in football.

I could be silent about this complaint (and I don't know if you included me in this group or not... I just know I've harped on some of these issues now for a decade) but until things change, I'm not going to be quiet about them.

Here though is my question about the above...

This is a digital platform. If you don't want to read negativity then skip the post or skip the thread or put people on ignore. It's like saying 'I won't go to the library because there are too many books I don't want to read'.

I'll ALSO point this out as a fact....

The number, percentage and '+1's' of 'Debbie Downers on here would be vastly less and vastly out-weighed by the 'atta boy's' if we addressed some of these 'same old tired complaints'.... especially those that involve 'winning' against better competition.

I think we have the players and the fans for a winning program. We lack a head coach who can utilize the players and inspire the fans.

If Rice was winning, I wouldn't give a damn about the restrooms and concessions. But when we are losing, those things get magnified.

Just win.

Bingo. I think (and it is certainly my experience) that is not board negativity that has lessened the posts, but actual program negativity that has lessened posts and support. And this is seen in attendance and fund raising, granted some of this is from the virus. But a lot of folks have just resigned themselves to the mess that is Rice Athletics and their heart just isn't in like in it the past.

What does it say if 'negative posters' will run fans off from our one (and only?) fan site... and supposedly will run off players and coaches, but poor performance on the field will not??

Agree. There's talent up and down the roster. Bloomgren isn't utilizing it. He's wasting his opportunity to do something special at Rice. It's all blowing up in his face.
