RE: What happened to Jovoni Johnson?
Seems pretty apparent that Green and McCaffrey are unlikely to be the answer.

Maybe he’s not as good as McCaffrey. Occam’s razor and all that.

I’ll take the over. Constantine will be ready to play at some point this year

RE: What happened to Jovoni Johnson?
I recall Jovoni's first start as a freshman. Started off well completing something like 6 of his first 7 passes. He didn't throw interceptions. Left the game after getting injured on an 18 yard run. Never saw him complete deep passes, but had the arm to do it, thought he could be developed into becoming a decent passer and complete QB since he had the basic tools of size, leadership, athleticism. But this staff doesn't develop QB's. Need to move on to one that does and one that places them in sound college schemes to succeed even if the throwing is not pro level.

Last season Jovoni went 27-37 for 227 yards. That's 73% completion rate. His QBR was 133. That was in 2 starts vs arguably the best defenses in CUSA, Marshall and UAB. The year prior it was 118. Willey Green's career QBR is 88, 50% completion %. He's also thrown a bunch of picks and hasn't won a big game like Jovoni did vs ranked Marshall.

RE: What happened to Jovoni Johnson?
I think people kicking McCaffrey to the gutter after 1 game is kind of silly, but I do wonder why Jovani has seen so little time on the field under Bloomgren. Actually, I don’t wonder at all. Bloomgren would have to adapt his offense to match Jovani’s strengths. Bloomgren is unable or unwilling to do so (both of which are, independently, fatal flaws) so Jovani sits around.

I’ve heard Bloom doesn’t believe he reads the defense well enough to pass. Bloom clearly can’t read a defense himself since he keeps calling runs straight into the Dline repeatedly.

I didn't see the game last night. To those who did: did McCaffery show something special with his feet? Did he have opportunities to show something?

I recall there was a good option keeper in the second quarter for 18 yards. We only had one longer run the entire game, and that was against UH's backups in the garbage time final drive. The very next play was McCaffrey's second interception. At that point, he was 4 of 8 for 32 yards with two interceptions and two sacks.

He bounced back. The next drive was the TD drive where his stat line was a much nicer 4 of 4 for 40 yards, not including a deep incompletion that baited a defensive pass interference, so his throwing really earned 55 yards. He also had a 9-yard run right before the TD pass, but I don't recall if that was designed or improvised.

He did extend some plays throughout the game, but he honestly didn't have much chance to. The line immediately collapsed around him almost every pass. We definitely underutilized him. More than once I saw him hand the ball off and continue unaccounted for on a bootleg motion, but without the ball. The potential success of the option, even just as a four or five times per game complement to the base run scheme, is staring Bloomgren in the face. McCaffrey also had a good play-action bootleg from our short yardage diamond formation. I think it was 3rd and 1, everybody in the stadium expecting the dive, and McCaffrey rolled out to toss to a TE/FB on a short flare route. That said, it seems the receiver needs to be very wide open because he doesn't set his feet to throw accurately on the run.

Positives:
Yes, he ran to escape defenders, extend plays, and create opportunities.
I saw a lot of potential there.

Opportunities: receivers were getting open.

Negatives: mccaffery was not hitting them unless they were inside a 10 yard radius. Last play I watched was 3rd and long inside our own 5. Tough situation to convert for any team. But rolling right he escaped the rush and had a man open underneath rolling with him and just past the yard to gain. Since he was throwing on the run the ball sailed right and out of bounds. You got to either stop and plant (if he had time) or account for your own motion in launching on the run. Tough throw to make but the only good throws I remember seeing were short ones.

The drive before the half was actually pretty phenomenal, with multiple broken plays being converted. Got out a ball underhanded for a first down just before his knee hit the ground. That was a special play and he has potential for more like that. But we just gotta figure out how to hit the open guys!!

Maybe… with more practice time in the system and now with a new first string receiving Corps due to injury some of that chemistry can help going forward? I hope???

Both McCaffery and Green were sporting knee braces last night that I don’t remember seeing last week. That may have been a factor in Luke’s mobility as well.

So clearly Jovoni is unfit to run this offense…got it.

RE: What happened to Jovoni Johnson?
Jovoni beat No. 15 Marshall 20-0 last season. He’s been my guy since I first watched him in fall drills his freshman year. He has intangibles that add up to being a winner. Passing offense needs to be tailored to match his skills.

My lord, the kid is a National Merit Scholar! (Using Stanford criteria, that ought to mean at least something….)

In a sports bar after the game in Fayetteville, talking to some youngish Hog fans, one of whom was Jovoni’s teammate in high school school at Conway, Ark. Why isn’t he playing? The questions came. “He was one of the best players in Arkansas, the fans wanted him bad for the Razorbacks.”

At the very least he needs to be on the field somewhere where he can get his hands on the ball in space.

Coaches….

Jovoni Johnson and Juma Otoviano appear to have been left for dead by the coaching staff. Both have had big moments but battled injuries. If healthy, it makes no sense for them to be rotting on the bench.

This sounds very Bill O'Brien "ish" as you know DeAndre Hopkins just isn't any good. Don't worry about those two TD's today or that amazing play last year on the hail mary.

At least Bill O’Brien was a good coach.

Just not a good GM.

Thanks for the feedback to everyone

I'm a little more optimistic on McCaffrey now. Overall, I was afraid we'd very much miss Collins and so far that's proving true

Unless he wants a good education, Jovani Johnson should leave the program. He'll only sit the bench under Bloomgren. His talents are completely wasted at Rice. I'm so sick of seeing the ball run on every play. I want someone to come in and install the Run-n-Shoot.
