It's not uncommon. Recall during Willy Roy's days it was the one and only time Notre Dame was willing to face the Huskies -- in an exhibition.

If by chance they lose it isn't "official." Is that right? They can explain it away as a "practice match?" Or does it allow them to get in an extra match without it counting toward some limit? Don't know, so asking.

yes generally exhibition matches don't count, thus the phrase....exhibition

Yeah I got that. I was asking why they are scheduled that way to begin with instead of as regular matches ... risk of losing, extra practice, e.g.? Maybe could have worded it better.

Won or loose, I wouldn't put too much stock in MO State. Mo State WAS rated #12 and now not even in the top 25 (according the United Soccer Coaches, one of the main entities for college soccer rankings). They play in a weak conference (MVC) and so far this fall has beat such "powerhouses" as EIU, Belmont, Rockhurst, and Central Arkansas. Their only loss was to Tulsa.

So hard to tell how good these teams are until they match up face to face.

RE: NIU Men's Soccer Defeats #18 Ranked Marquette
Huskie men's soccer now 6-1 following 6-0 thumping of Western Illinois. Nick Markanich first-half hat trick sparks triumph. Fifth shutout of the season, third consecutive with Martin Sanchez stonewalling foes for five straight halves -- this win over WIU was split with back-up Parker Smith.

Next match is Tuesday at 2 p.m. versus Chicago State (2-3-1) at SeatGeek Stadium in Bridgeview. Apparently the Cougars are trying to appeal to their alumni who don't live near their campus.

Liking these two posts by NorthCoast and uiniu57. Men's soccer a point of pride for NIU (we need it).

And NIU gets to play something at SeatGeek! (Just curious ... has NIU ever played there?)

Going into the weekend, Nick Markanich was tied for first among Division 1 players with 6 goals. After collecting a hat trick yesterday, he should be in first by himself.

We should be giving some love to the defense on this team. They have allowed only 3 goals in the 8 games, 2 of them in the loss to Notre Dame.

It would be nice if the announcer for this Green Bay game could pronounce our players names correctly!

FINAL: NIU 1, Green Bay 0.

Seventh straight win and the fifth straight shutout by NIU. The team improves to 8-1 on the season with 27 goals scored and just 3 goals against.

This team plays really good defense.

Next match: Saturday 10/2, 11am - MAC opener at Western Michigan

Did you catch if and who got any red cards for that little skirmish at the end?

I thought I heard that there was a red card issued but no clarification as to which team or on whom.

One of the NIU players (Camilo Estrada) bumped a Green Bay player and got the RED. It was a messy ending to the game.

For years and years Steve Nemeth handled the P.A. duties and a lot of the alums swear to Nemo's loyalty and passion for soccer. Heard he still lives in town but athletics turned its back on him just like pushing Korcek aside.
