It would be more of a preemptive expansion than not for the ACC, despite the fact those schools have already committed to the Big 12. I mean the ACC could just make them a better offer and they shouldn't have a problem "applying" for that "other job".

I still feel it will happen sooner than later, and USF/Memphis/Boise St can backfill in the Big 12. I don't feel this is a likely scenario especially given the aggressive timeline, but certainly a possibility for the next cycle beyond the immediate backfilling that has yet to take place.

I agree. Obviously geography is no longer a prime driver of realignment, but nonetheless just looking at a map it seems to me that if the ACC has any interest in expanding to 16 the no-brainer additions are Cincinnati and WVU. Notre Dame is never coming and there are no two better candidates left in their footprint. It would also allow them to set up a clean north-south divisional split with the Virginia-North Carolina border being the dividing line.

In that scenario the Big 12’s logical response would be to scoop up Memphis and USF. Boise State isn’t a good geographic or academic fit and BYU doesn’t need them as a travel partner since Iowa State can fill that role.

Possibly some of us are overcompensating on academics to dismiss Boise. I'm guessing there's still going to be resistance to the former JuCo in various presidents' offices, but if they can build up the Big 12's football bona fides while not embarassing themselves in men's basketball, it's certainly a possibility.

BYU need me an all sports travel partner assuming they need a travel partner. CSU is the only logical fit. But Memphis USF SMU would appear to be ahead in the pecking order. ACC scoops WVU and UC, PAC scoops OSU/TCU/Houston, then CSU Boise are more likely assuming BYU doesn’t leave.

If that is indeed true then you would almost have to backfill that spot with Memphis for UC's sake.

WVU and whom? Need 16 and ND isn’t leaving their independence in football.

I like WVU, but if there's ever anything that deserves the "Lucy pulling away the football from Charlie Brown" picture, it's every "WVU is going to the ACC!" rumor that I've seen for the past 11 years.

I don't disagree. This isn't coming from Twitter people like the Dude or message board posters.

It had been quiet for weeks regarding WVU and expansion and today people I trust completely started using some pretty strong language in regards to WVU and the ACC. I had 3 different people mention WVU being gone by '23 with an announcement coming before the end of the year.

I've heard that ND is going to be forced into a conference(ACC) when playoff expansion comes up for discussion shortly.

I've also heard that WVU and Ok St have become very close since the departure of OU/UT. I have a hard time seeing it personally but they may be looking at the Big 12 like WVU looked at the Big East after the departure of Pitt and may want to give the ACC a try. Again, take that part with a grain of salt.

Feel free to come back and mock me if no announcement is made before the end of the year. It will be well deserved.

Three Texas schools is a lot for PAC 12, but it is a possibility, IMO.

Why budgets matter:

This is a school that needed more than a decade and a significant loan to recently open an $11 million indoor practice facility for the football program in 2020...."

They certainly didnt need 10 years. What they needed was their own board of regents, which they finally got and transitioned to sometime between 2017 and 2018. Prior to that, all 4 year universities in the state operated under the same board of regents. Memphis raised $40million in about 4 years for the IPF and other upgrades such as for basketball.

I would hate to see the move to an OCS. For one, the Liberty Bowl is as on-campus as you can get, and is located closer to the university's dorms than a lot of other "OCS's". Its easy to get into and out of traffic wise, is a B12 sized stadium, and locker rooms and Tiger Lane are top notch. The press boxes are getting replaced now, and more seatbacks are being put in. The current press boxes blow, and is one of the biggest eyesores of the stadium. They are also cramped inside.

Just to add a bit - apparently TBR had some weird rules about building things and funding and it was a pain to get everything going. Which is almost certainly true because TBR is always a pain to deal with.

With that being said, an OCS would be amazing from an alumni engagement perspective. Lots of alumni go to football games, getting them on campus regularly would be huge from a "campus is waaaay better than you remember" perspective. It's the "Come reminense about old buildings, classrooms and labs" that allows you to build a relationship with the alumni. From the alumni who remember the old book store in the basement of the old UC and Richardson towers to newer alumni who haven't seen recent upgrades in buildings.

The OCS gets your people back on campus for one reason and allows them to take that nostalgia trip. I've seen it over and over. As long as they weren't treated like dirt, chances are, you can get them to donate.

The liberty bowl breaks that relationship building aspect and nostalgia trip cycle. It makes alumni engagement more difficult and thus getting donations from the far more numerous "average alumni" more difficult.

If you think any schools from the PAC are going to leave for the Big12 then you are extremely gullible. The schools in the Big12 want out just as bad as the AAC schools wanted out of the American. There is still a decent chance that TCU and UH will leave for the PAC 12

If the Big 12 tries to take PAC schools, that is the likely outcome.

Happens a lot when a weaker conference tries to take from a larger conference.

The only thing I can think of, assuming the report is accurate, is that Colorado and Utah aren't happy to be out west and if the money is right they think they come back ty the B12. I suspect that the report is false, however.

Only way I see the Mountain Time Zone Pac 12 schools coming east to the Big 12 is if the Big 10 raids the Pac 12 for USC and friends.

Otherwise, why leave a venerable, stable league who could poach TCU, Houston, Tech, Ok St, Kansas etc. anytime it wanted to join a johnny come lately revolving door league where half of the original members have left for greener pastures.

Especially when the money is similar or worse.

Big12 is targeting PAC teams. That's the latest word from a credible media outlet. Memphis is a proud member of the AAC. Boise State should send its application to join the AAC.

Is Big12 poaching the PAC a pipe dream? Absolutely.

But Bob thinks the new Big12 will get better tv offer than PAC. I can't blame the guy for trying. He's having a hard time adjusting to the realities of the current college football landscape. The guy probably doesn't want to go out with his legacy marred by Texas/OU leaving. So he's stuck on the PAC poaching play to redeem himself a bit. It's not going to work and he's should probably be fired soon.

Agree. I thought UCF/Houston/Cincinnati/BYU made the most sense to add to the Big 12. But Boise St/Memphis is probably the next two that make the most sense. For all of it's faults, Boise does have a recognizable brand and is the premier football program in it's (admittedly small but very fast growing) state. How many other G5 programs can say that?

RE: Boise and Memphis still on Big 12 radar?
The Big 12 is expanding again as they have been VERY vocal about it. It will be sooner than later (likely when OU/TX departure date is known). Boise and Memphis is what most people believe in media and school circles.

One interesting thing to watch...the Baylor AD and Boise AD are very good friends. If it is Boise and Memphis as next 2 additions and it is coming soon...then you would think common courtesy the Baylor AD would advise Boise not to take AAC offer (because Big 12 offer coming shortly). Seems like the Big 12 would already know who the next 2 schools are (which I think they do) as they just discussed 8 potential candidates right? They know who is next.

So if Boise takes the AAC offer by chance that means one of two things.....1) The B12 2nd round of expansion is further down the road maybe 1-3 years or 2) Boise is not one of the Big 12 choices.

This is an important watch.

Among the names associated with the Big12 I think Oliver Luck would be the obvious choice.

I've been back and forth on Aresco. I wish he would have supported UCF more when we first made the national title claim. Over time I realize it was probably good political move for him to stay neutral and later sheepishly support it. I think he negotiated a great tv deal for the AAC. I'm curious to see if he will be more aggressive this year if Cincy gets left out again.
