Memphis is about to be a Carnegie R1 school so their academics are solid. They have great basketball and their football has been solid the 8 years or so. Idk why everybody hates on Memphis.

Memphis academics are in no way solid.

This Memphis fan of about 50 years thanks you for the kind words, TroyFan15.

No doubt: Lots of fans who seemingly would have no specific reason to disdain Memphis (the city, the university and UM athletics) nevertheless do so. A doctoral dissertation could be written explaining the reasons. Those reasons include elements of racial bias, an understandable criticism of some fumbling and bumbling by both the university and the city, some cheating by the hoops program (which has been embarrassing) and, quite frankly, some jealousy. What fan of a college athletics program that is not nationally relevant in either major sport and is located in nondescript place would not be envious of the Tiger hoops program and of the City of Memphis' Beale Street, blues, BBQ, historic architecture, big river, rock and roll history, zoo, art museum, etc.?

Memphis is viewed by many as "the enemy." An "outlaw" or "renegade" program. A dirty city. A university with high school-level academics. Blah, blah, blah. We Tiger fans have heard all the barbs. And at some point, you start to wear that nastiness from your critics as a badge of honor. Memphians (I'm not but was born in the city) have a boulder-size chip on the shoulder. Our football team, despite years of mediocrity, has drawn far better (relatively speaking) than lots of other football teams at "city universities." And that's because Memphians love their Tigers.

And one more thing: Grind City Brewing Co. in Memphis offers a micro-brewed malt liquor. How many craft beer makers brew a malt liquor. That beer is a prime example of why I love the city and the Tigers.

Thanks again.

Would that the Music City ladies call me "NashVegas Willie."

Actually, if you consider that Memphis academics were essentially junior high level a mere five years ago, one could argue they are now "more than solid."

Hes been wrong plenty before. Guy doesnt know anyone or anything. He speculated in July that there would be 4 superconferences and the BIG XII was dead.

Right. He just keeps flinging 01-rivals up against the wall in the hope that a little of it someday sticks.

Probably Louisiana Tech. I dont see them getting into the AAC, the Sunbelt West all hate them, the MWC is too far, and I don't seenthe MAC reaching that deep out of their footprint either.

Probably Marshall. Every time a WV State team gets a good FB coach the Governor runs him off so he doesn't face political opposition from him years later. So, even though Marshall has been great, you can't count on them to get or stay great and they have no market.

LaTech. But if we are being honest, it will be all the leftover former SBC programs and LaTech.
