Nice letter. Kind of like the one you get from the ex-girlfriend or ex-wife telling you that you just weren’t quiet good enough for her to hang on, but eventually you’ll find someone to take you and love you. Oh sigh. I’ve been a Tiger fan for a lot of years, since they played at the old, old Crump Stadium. Being a “Big Time” program has always been just out of reach for Memphis.

Correct.

RE: the let down email
"Our understanding is that this latest round of expansion for the Big 12 essentially came down to the size of the institutions and the markets in which they reside."

This confirms what many of us have speculated. The university can't control being in the #51 TV market when the other schools selected are all #8 through #37. The university can't control that it's in a metro area with virtually zero net population growth and is ranked as one of the poorest among the top 50 metros. It can control its own size to some extent, but going all-out to grow the enrollment risks watering down the academic standing. And being in a low-growth region also makes it challenging to increase enrollment.

So we wait for the next opportunity, and in the meantime do what is necessary to maintain the momentum we already have. BTW the e-mail seems very confident about getting R1 status.

I think that's exactly what they said without being too bold to say it.

We could find ourselves in a position where we are almost guaranteed to be the G5 representative to the New Years Bowl and future playoffs.

Stop making this argument, it’s silly.

What’s the TV market in South Bend Indiana? Or Oxford MS? Or (insert college town here)

TV markets are a really small part of the equation.

What matters is:

* Eyeballs to watch the team (ie fans of the team guaranteed to tune in)
* Quality of program (or potential thereof) to make the casual fan tune in to matchup A vs matchup B - TV networks competing against one another for eyeballs and, by the extension, dollars.

TV markets only matter when you have a large fanbase of a school within that (large) market.

It also came down to universities that show a high commitment to their programs and facilities. Not programs that talk about minimal improvements for 10 years and still don’t get them done.

I hope they expand soon or others will pass up by again. And they’ll still be talking about the press boxes….

Correct - potential to build a fanbase over time. And to do that you need commitment.

But at the end of the day it’s all about eyeballs and dollars.

He’s right about us being the biggest loser. Our conference got decimated and we’re stuck in it. There are no quality replacements that would accept an invite. Let’s hope the Big 12 moves fast on round 2.

Yep. Now, the AAC will stay as it is for this season and probably one more. After that, if we don't get 'in' understand that P5 schools will now outnumber G5 for the first time..... That does not bode well for those left behind.
