Although I personally would love to see Liberty in the SunBelt, I'm afraid there would be opposition to it from both sides.
The SunBelt presidents might not be too keen on adding Liberty, and I think Liberty's current president wants to give the SunBelt the treatment that Notre Dame has been giving the Big Ten (in a word "No way.")
I believe it's more likely that the Sunbelt is looking at a pair of public colleges, probably Marshall and Southern Miss, since both are very unhappy in Conference USA.

USM and UTSA would smoothly fill in the gaps that likely departing UTA and UALR are going to leave.
If Sunbelt can get Marshall and UAB too go for it and go to 14

Texas and OU are out the door.
Houston, Cincinnati, and UCF have forced the AAC to raid C-USA.
The Sun Belt know that C-USA is going to raid them next and they are trying to beat C-USA to the punch, by tempting a few key programs into jumping conferences, and shifting the balance of power.
I won't work. C-USA is still a the better overall conference. And any C-USA program the Belt would target knows it.
Maybe there are some metrics that define this, but I see the two leagues as essentially indistinguishable.
What they should really do is form a partnership and scheduling alliance. If the AAC takes a few, and I think it remains to be seen what their strategy is, then there's strength in numbers.
Look at the athletic budgets, coaches salaries, and NCAA results...
C-USA's champ (UNT), beat Purdue in the opening round of March Madness. The Sun Belt champ (App State) was forced to compete in a #16 seed play-in game and lost it to Norfolk State. The Sun Belt champ didn't even merit a guaranteed slot in March Madness. In fact C-USA's champ has won something like 5 of their last 6 opening round games at the NCAA Tournament. I couldn't tell you the last time a Sun Belt team won a game in March Madness.
Lol this is near scripted response. In regards to basketball everyone knows that App State won the conference championship, but was in no way the most qualified team to go to the tournament last year. Upsets happen and those that capitalize on them get a chance at rewards.
Just an FYI, GaState won a game in March Madness a few years ago.

2021 AP Poll
17 Coastal Carolina
Final AP Poll
2020
14 Coastal Carolina
15 Louisiana
2019
19 Appalachian St
2015
24 Marshall
2014
23 Marshall
Sun Belt has the hot hand right now. Marshall was the last CUSA team to finish in the AP Poll in recent seasons. What does this mean? The Sun Belt would seem to be gaining in brand and performance strength over CUSA.

I mean, I don't know EXACTLY when either, but I do remember Ron Hunter of Georgia State, and I remember Little Rock went 30-5 when they had Chris Beard just as much as I remember North Texas last year.
I understand exactly what you mean, and I understand that the hierarchy is what it is for a reason. And I was on here adamantly talking about how the AAC is not raiding the Big 12; that's not how it works, ever or will ever.
But AAC vs Big 12 and CUSA vs SBC is not an apples to apples situation anymore.
But the massive difference in TV dollars just isn't there between C-USA and Sun Belt.
I don't think the Sun Belt is going to successfully raid C-USA, but depending on whom the AAC invites... it becomes plausible that someone decides they'd rather be in the Sun Belt than the remaining C-USA, or a group of SBC/C-USA schools decide to form their own thing.
It isn't a TOTAL slam dunk like AAC vs Big 12 was. Or C-USA vs Sun Belt used to be.

As a fan in the South unaffiliated with either conference, I see the sun belt as the stronger of the two conferences. Their institutions also seem much closer knit together both in terms of geography but also fanbases and outlook. If I were the Sun Belt, I’d very closely pursue Southern Miss and Marshall. You then could divide into:
East: Marshall, App State, Coastal Carolina, Georgia Southern, Georgia State, Troy
West: South Alabama, Southern Miss, Louisiana, UL Monroe, Arkansas State, Texas State

1 bid league is a 1 bid league no matter what. There were better teams than App State last year but they pulled off a great run in the SBC tourney and won. It happens. That’s basketball. It’s what makes March Madness… madness..

Perhaps CUSA and Sun belt might trade a few teams that have different strengths and they'll each call it a success. More of a trade than a raid.

The money may not be different, but Sun Belt sold its soul to ESPN. Selected games are on air but All games are on ESPN+.
CUSA cludged together Facebook, Stadium and I am not even sure for their games.
The simplicity of the single platform and access to ESPN seems like a slam dinl if all things are equal

C-USA is contracted with cbssports and espn3 and espn+. Espn can move those games to linear channels and has a few times. Some cbssports games unfortunately end up on facebook.

I can’t see trades happening. It’s expand or be raided and the SBC is in a much better place is was back in 2012/13

I wish this were some sort of firm rule. As it stands, I have to go figure out how to watch Stadium or whatever so I can see GS play at FAU this Saturday.

Agreed. There's no point in trading currently, and creating a new league means no basketball credits, no football playoff credits, and no media money.

We all know how that turned out.
I mean not really, since I think the Sun Belt might make more in TV revenue than C-USA, or at the very least the difference is so close it's not even worth distinguishing. I don't really think there's much point in schools from either league moving from one to the other, but maybe if the AAC took 2 C-USA members that would tip the balance toward the Sun-Belt.
Sun Belt has taken home more CFP money four of the past five seasons than CUSA by placing higher in the rankings used for performance money and has signed an extension with ESPN that increases appearance on linear TV both weeknight and Saturday appearances

What exactly does CUSA offer than ANY Sun Belt school would pay $2 million to leave Sun Belt?
Worse football ratings, less TV exposure, and less money from the CFP isn’t driving any other than TXST to CUSA.

CUSA is so strong in hoops they’ve not had an at-large bid since 2012, Sun Belt 2013. I think the difference in units earned is 2 to the favor of CUSA and that’s split 14 ways.

I agree trades aren't happening.
But a new league could happen when there's so little media money to walk away from to try for something better and they're dividing so few units so many ways.
(And now is the time, because those Units are even further devalued with no NCAA Tournament in 2020; and because the next CFP deal isn't done yet. You pounce now and you could get in with the same football playoff credits as before).
But NCAA Tourney revenue, each C-USA school that left for a brand new league would be sacrificing probably like $2.2 million by switching leagues. TOTAL. Over ten years, maybe. And that's while projecting they keep winning one game a year.
Sun Belt schools would be like $1.2 million, again over about 10 years as they have to build back up the six-year roll over from not existing.
It would NOT cost that much to form a new league because there's so little current money at stake.

You get a unit for making the field, and one unit per win (up until the Final Four). And each unit pays you for the next six seasons.
So because of that, C-USA is getting paid 8 to SBC 5 next season.
Each unit is worth like $390,000k or so, it escalates each year by like 10 grand based on how many commercials CBS/Turner sells.

I would rather keep the 12 we have now. JMU might be the ONLY FCS team worth inviting up and keep perceptions up but I think the SBC is beyond that now. They got their eyes on teams like Marshall and Southern Miss I bet.
