Teams Unofficial Nicknames
Chance for the smaller teams' fans to chime in too.

Tell us what some of your nicknames are:
(They can be unofficial, funny, derogatory, etc...)

Kinda like this:

Kansas State Wildcats
also called the Powercats I believe
and called the Mildcats by rivals...

Kansas St fans correct me if I'm wrong.

But this is the idea of the thread...

Don't forget the participle: "Coogin' it." (Meaning to snatch defeat from the jaws of victory, usually late in a game and in a spectacular fashion.)

This is true. But to substitute an "i" in place of the "y" is tolerable. What is intolerable is to misspell it by typing "Cincinatti." Which is just illiterate and a weak troll.

I have to admit to applying that one on many occasions.

Washington State also "Cougs It".

This infamous 60-59 game, naturally, being my favorite example:

When Bill Snyder came in and took over the program, he created (or commissioned - he’s probably not a graphic designer) the new K-State logo and he probably gave it the name “Powercat”. So that’s a term used both for the logo itself and the team. Since the creation of that logo and the unprecedented success they had under him (just after the famous SI “Futility U” article), Powercat paraphernalia has been very prominent around the state.

Yes, opponents do sometimes call them “Mildcats”. And also to reply to their “Eat-em up, eat-em up, KSU!” chant with a derogatory variation.

Slight OT, but kind of on topic, I think every school in Division I should have a unique nickname. None of this 27 of you are Tigers, 26 of you are Bulldogs stuff. So many schools have cooler things they could go by than just the same thing everyone uses.

Case in point: LSU Tigers vs Auburn Tigers. In the same conference and division. Under my crazy brain, that would be the LSU Bayou Bengals (an unofficial name they're called, so On Topic!) versus the Auburn War Eagles (not something they're called, but what they say).

Official name: Alabama Crimson Tide

Nicknames: Bama, Red Elephants

Here's another layer...original nickname: Thin Red Line...back in the early 1900s.

Derogatory names: Bammer, Roll Tide also mockingly referenced as Row Tie.

NAU claims the Lumberjacks. We've been called the Lumberjacks before the imposters from Texas were even a school.
