probably saw the number 1 and 2 player commit to Memphis weeks before school started this year and figured the same thing could happen to him in 2022--- probably wants to be safer on his committed school

maybe.
or maybe the 17y old found a girlfriend at another school, or maybe his friends are staying at some local place and he wants to be with them. or maybe Penny asked him to, or maybe he's been courted by another school with a better NIL offer, or maybe he's had a discussion with our staff that went south...
or maybe he's a normal 17 year old that just changed his mind. no reason to call a kid a quitter, or to say he doesn't want competition. I'm just glad he considered us, had originally wanted to come here, and i wish him well.

Don't get all of this scared of competition stuff. Any good parent or adviser should tell their kid to go play at a school that gives the best chance of playing significant time, plays a suitable style of play and also consider the level of external competition (ie, other teams) . Don't get why fans want these kids to waste parts of 4 valuable years that they can't get back being frustrated by their lack of opportunity or situation. Some guys can even earn minutes but the situation of who is around them is not right so they struggle. Any kid should avoid that when possible.

The answer is simple: middle age and old men (usually couch potatoes) who live vicariously through 17 and 18 year olds and put too much stock in what those 17/18 year olds do in respect to a college program.

Yep. It’s important to find the right fit. Could have been a parent or advisor that said something or he could have seen the writing on the wall himself. Either way, the kid should do what makes the most sense for him. If you can’t handle riding the pine…don’t go somewhere where you’ll probably be doing that more than you like. Seems like common sense and really the best decision for all in the end.

Strange... it seems he de-committed around the same time Memphis offered 5 stars PG - Robert Dillingham class of 2023. Robert Dillingham was thought to be 100% headed to North Carolina. Memphis has broken this prediction with two votes for NC and one vote for Memphis. Just sayin' he was in Memphis around July working out.
