Yo, Xi. I know you want to dunk on Biden* at any chance you get, but seriously, you're going to be sorry you did this.

No he won't. If China takes over in Afghanistan, it's more about making a move to control land routes to secure oil from Iran. Xi couldn't care less what the world thought of him strong-arming the Afghani people while snuggling up to the Taliban.

THIS. China desperately needs a more reasonable means of procuring oil rather than depending on the US Navy to escort their tankers from the Mideast all the way through the strait and the Indian Ocean to China.

I also believe China blackmailed Biden* into the entire rushed departure from Afghanistan while there is still some 6 weeks or so for China to settle in before the harsh winter weather arrives.

Now we can understand better Biden*'s absolute insistence the U.S. be out of Kabul by August 31. Now the Big Guy will get his 10% deposited in his brother Frank's account.

I think all of this BS is impeachment worthy but the Dems will simply shrug it off.

True.
Quote:but seriously, you're going to be sorry you did this.
Not true.

It would be one thing if PRC and Taliban were enemies, but they’re not. They are allies and frequently partners. PRC’s agenda and Taliban’s agenda diverge here and there, but never come into conflict. This is a power move and magnifies Biden’s impotence and irrelevance. And America’s, too, for so long as Biden is President.

When decision making on a mass scale totally doesn’t make sense then go with the simple question and probably answer

Hunters laptop was the gateway key to what was really going on and everybody in key institutions and businesses intentionally ignored it

China is suited to take the country if they want. Having a total disregard for human rights makes your military more effective.

RE: China To Take Over Bagram
They have oil arriving overland already, and plenty of it from various countries, but they can probably get it much cheaper from a sanctioned Iran who will have more limited access to world markets. They may use Iranian gas to drive down future contracts with Russia.

Power of Siberia-2 pipeline supplies are locked into long term price contracts already though. Russia and China negotiate on essentially even terms though. Nearly all foreign revenue if Turkmenistan comes from smelling gas to China.

Tajikistan and Kyrgyzstan are both very heavy in debt from China and have little choice but to sell to them, while Kazakhstan sells thru pipelines going thru 3rd nations, and is not nearly as heavily dependent. I think China wants to drive down the prices paid to all of Central Asia by connecting to Iran in more ways.

But One Belt needs Afghanistan for many, many projects, and I think is probably more important to China right now than supplies of oil and gas, which are already reasonably secured. OBOR is primarily about providing manufactured goods and construction and engineering services, so Afghanistan turns into a lynchpin to a tons of potential contracts worth 100s of billions of USD.

There's no roads between Afghanistan and China.

Do you have any idea how much an overland oil pipeline would cost?

The trans-Alaska pipeline cost $44 billion in 2021 dollars. It was 800 miles through friendly territory. It crosses 3 mountain ranges, but most of it is flat, and most of it is alongside a pre-existing road.

A trans-Afghanistan pipeline would need to be well over 1,000 miles (probably 1500). It would be easy to cut off - a 200 mile stretch would be through a section of Afghanistan less than 12 miles wide between Pakistan and Tajikistan, (an area that doesn't have any roads).

The USA found that contractors in Afghanistan cost 10 times as much as contractors in the USA and did half the work. They did it quickly & sloppily.

Pipelines are ripe targets for terrorism because it's impossible to defend them all the time.

I bet China could spend $500 billion and still not have a completed pipeline. Because by then, the Northern Alliance would make mincemeat of it.

I think that's mostly due to the US's ineptitude/gross negligence/corruption/profiteering than anything. And that was during a civil war. That war (for now) is over.

I think its OBOR and not pipelines China is after.

That and the fact that China is their neighbor and have a legitimate Islamic insurgency in their country that they don't want the Taliban to encourage.

China spent hundreds of billions building ghost cities in the desert with no intention of ever using them. You don't think they will spend billions, if not trillions to blow the tops of a few mountains foe oil pipelines and roadways?

China doesn't fear the Taliban, nor do they realistically offer them any legitimacy other than lip service. If China takes over in Afghanistan, thw Afghani people will be treated the same as the Uigers if not worse. China wants an overland route for trade and oil, Afghanistan give them just that straight through to Iran of all places.

In the end, doesn't matter what they do with Afghanistan, Quid pro Joe earned his 10%.

China can afford to waste billions (on empty cities). It can't afford to waste trillions.

Xinjiang is easy to control - it's a flat desert. Whoever controls the water also controls the country.

Afghanistan has three times as many people, is much more mountainous, and much more remote.

Afghanistan also has a tradition of resisting foreign intrusions of any type. In the last 2 centuries they've fought (and won) 5 wars against foreign superpowers. Can you imagine trying to stop terrorist attacks on a 1,000 mile pipeline?

Is it possible to guard a 12-mile wide corridor that is 200 miles long? That's what China needs to do to connect to Zebak (population 8,000), the closest "road" in Afghanistan to China.
