Throw in the oft repeated idea that Old Dominion and Coastal have passed JMU by, and we’ve (once again) just about beat the dead horse topic of “Anyone losing interest” (in FCS FB) into fine dust.

Checking Fall attendance for the first two JMU home games (22k+ avg.) it appears interest in JMU football is alive and well, and is as strong as ever. Comparatively, yesterday ODU drew over 18k fans against a hometown “cupcake,” and Coastal drew a record 17k for a nationally televised game against the weakest P5 FB team on the planet. Although JMU’s attendance topped ODU and Coastal, it strikes me all three programs have devoted fanbases, and all three have demonstrated that the level of “interest” in their football teams are healthy and in no danger of slipping. When a FB program is filling between 80-100% of all available seats in their stadiums what’s to complain about? Oh, that’s right…JMU fanatics want to host Alabama, Clemson, VT and UVA at BFS on successive Saturdays, and devoutly believe spending the money for 22 extra scholarships will make that a reality.

Realistically, however, would interest” in JMU FB experience an upward tick should the program reclassify? Undoubtedly, it would. And it appears that a change is imminent…but what will that change/reclassification really mean?

Count me in on a possible move to a new conference (at the FBS level) especially if it includes conference mates ODU/Marshall/App St.. Yet, will a move to FBS improve home attendance? Perhaps, by a little, because JMU is already filling 89% of all available seats.

Will a move to FBS increase interest and demand for a seat in BFS, and as demand increases, will that also drive up the asking price for tickets? Yep, basic supply-and-demand economics, so we can expect that too will happen.

Will JMU be able to schedule the occasional P5 opponent at home? Yes, I would think so, but with scheduling contracts with P5 teams being written years in advance don’t expect that to happen overnight. In the meantime, JMU will be playing on the road.

Will the increased demand for tickets promote or speed-up the rehab/rebuild/completion of the Godwin side of BFS to increase seating? Possibly. Market demand for seats that would influence financial thinking about making another BIG investment in BFS could be tricky. Would a year-to-year conference schedule of Marshall/ODU/App St. generate sellouts? It might take several years of sustained WINNING at the G5 FBS level to create the demand for more tickets. In turn, selling more tickets, and at a higher price, would be necessary to convince the powers-that-be an expansion to BFS is warranted. All-in-all, get ready to open your wallets if FBS G5 FB is the goal.

In the meantime, please spare me the “is anyone losing interest” drivel. No real JMU fan is losing interest! We’re all engaged and want what’s best for JMU. Beating the feathers out of Morehead or Maine be damned. Go Dukes! Beat ‘em all by 50+ points. To heck with nail-biters. Dominate! And what I desire most right now, in this season, is another NC.

I agree with this. Don't think the average fan is losing interest. I'll admit that the regular season can be somewhat boring with about a third of the games typically feeling meaningful to me. As JMU has lost unexpected games frequently, it happens every couple years. So even games like Villanova, Richmond, Delaware, etc. are potential losses. I thought Maine was actually going to be one of those "meaningful" games this year but didn't really feel like it.

I don't get the "I'm losing interest" mentality. I think fans complaining here need a reality check. JMU has won 1 national championship in the last 5 years. If anything, they've shown an inability to finish. I'd prefer to see 1-2 more challenging games every regular season to help build the quality team that's ready for the playoffs. Wish we were able to get a decent FBS opponent to stack with the Weber State game. I don't really care about the Weber State type games drawing more fans or not. As you say, the stadium is relatively full anyway. I am more concerned about the team getting competition than the fan expectation.

I don't think it's as much as current fans losing interest but more about those fans doing more and also attracting the newer fans/recent grads. Where is the fan support coming from 5, 10, 20 years from now?

I agree with most of what you say in theory, but :ban:JMU probably has only "filled" 90%+ of seats less than 5 times since BFS was expanded. I'm certainly glad that we have alums willing to fork out money and buy season tickets even if they won't go to all the home games, but saying we're even that close to capacity usually in terms of butts in seats is misleading.

I do suspect that we have quite a few alums though who are willing to take the football team a little more seriously once we shed the FCS stink. There is still the feeling among more casual fans that we're fun to follow but still in the junior leagues.

There it is again…the “butts in seats” argument. Which is complete BS.

It’s tickets sold. Period. That’s the only way attendance is gauged. Forget the “butts in seats” nonsense. That argument is meaningless. And since BFS was expanded, JMU has never had a regular season attendance average below 20k. Never, despite what you describe condescending as the “FCS stink.”

The bottom line is attendance at games and interest in the JMU football program is strong and is in no danger of slipping.

In small pond football, the money may be in selling seats, parking spots, hotdogs and beer but in the big boy pond the money (margins) is in donations, private and public and TV related revenue.

To me, butts in seats is a big indicator of interest. I know many in my group who are season ticket holders and have opted to stay home for Morehead and Maine, and I am not going to blame them or question their being big fans. Some have been going to JMU games for 30+ years like me. It gets to a point where people don’t have interest in watching a 62-7 win. Fewer and fewer people in the sections around us each year. Even in the playoffs where we know attendance has dropped fairly significantly.

I was at the Maine game (not Morehead) and there was significantly less than 22k there.

What was there- like 500 or 1000 there in the 4th quarter- I would say people left in the 2nd or 3rd quarter because they lost interest.

I am going to continue buying my batch of season tickets, but I am not going to make as many games as in the past- some because of family and kids stuff- but some because of the lack of an at least even decent opponent.

More or all in my group will be there when we are hosting App State or NC State instead of Morehead State or Weber State. 25k will not be enough- guaranteed.

That right there is business 101. Create more demand than you have supply. Instead of donating $500.00 for decent seats on the 20 yd line it's going to take a $5000.00 to get seats anywhere in the lower level.

RE: Anyone losing interest?
JMU sure as he11 better be concerned about butts in seats. Tickets purchased without attending on any sort of scale is due to things like corporate purchases (but few wanted to attend), giveaways (but few wanted to attend) or fan purchases (but few wanted to attend). In every case it's no or losing interest and the next step is tickets no longer being purchased.

The way to grow interest and donation base is to get people on campus and into the stadium, and immerse them in the JMU experience so the WANT to attend, donate, whatever.

Too many people in the bubble on here used to rubbing elbows with their little die-hard cabals to realize JMU's future as a university is directly tied to its ability to connect and maintain long-term, vested relationships with alumni.

There are long time fans on here stating they're losing interest, only to be met with marginalization and condescension. Hope JMU listens to their concerns and takes them seriously.

RE: Anyone losing interest?
Butts in seats matter in that they buy concessions. Some will buy tix and just tailgate all day, never going inside. That does hurt concessions to a small degree, but at least they paid for parking. Some companies will buy a corporate block but only use a portion of them. Doesn't help concessions or parking, but at least they are buying tix. Bottom line is, the more people coming into town on game day, the more it benefits the retail and hospitality segment of Harrisonburg. Happy businesses make for happy sponsors/donors.

Yep, hope this thinking doesn't extend to senior university leadership and the BOV. We know at least the discussions are happening, and there will be opportunities. Where we land this round will speak volumes more than any Bourne dialogue or Madia tweet. It would be very hard to stomach remaining in the CAA when the dust settles this time.

My view is lets crush FCS and grab another natty or two on our way out the door, but its way past time to move on.

I have ongoing concerns with Alger. Is he even sitting at the poker table or is he playing pinochle in the back parlor with Fred and Ethyl?

Many university presidents have been on ESPN media over the past 2 months and stating their case for inclusion in the realignment. I’ve never seen or heard Alger in this arena. When it comes to D-1 athletics he is the worst possible person to be our prez at this time.
Our only hope is that he falls and bumps his head producing a revelation that he should give all negotiation and communication authority to AD Jeff Bourne. Then we would have a fighting chance.
Problem is, I haven’t seen or heard Bourne on ESPN media over the past 2 months either.

Listened to the Coastal Carolina prez for 15 minutes last week and couldn’t believe how far ahead he is of Alger. Coastal has had one good FBS football season and is using recency bias to attempt to strike while the iron is hot. But they are not even close to what JMU has to offer in terms of media consumers, alumni base, athletic budget, facilities, etc. What we know as a universal truth… if you don’t ask, the answer is always NO. Lots of university presidents are publicly asking in this climate.

A couple factors may be schools pushing to increase seat taxes. I know people at other schools that have had prime seats for a long time get pushed out due to being reassigned. Other diehards that wouldn’t ever miss a function yet alone game finally get sick of the nonstop push for more forced donations. Some leagues have the weekday games that get on tv but don’t draw any fans due to trying to travel amid a workweek. I know some people that go to several different sports, but as prices continue to climb they have to slow down somewhere and have to make tough decisions where their entertainment dollars will go. Others love going, then take their kids but as the kids start growing and have their own events on game day they can no longer commit to season tickets.

People always talk about students leaving early, but even at the top of the FBS it’s the same, most notably at Bama. Also, the lack of attendance in the playoffs is another common thing in sports, not just JMU football.

The cell phone, gaming and an abundance of games on TV and the internet have also impacted attendance. People have way more options than they use to have. All sports are losing attendance.

agree with that, but also think Covid has an impact in two ways -

1) Some people don't yet feel comfortable returning to that setting.
2) Some have learned to live without going to a college game (saving time and $ watching on tv)

Certainly part of the equation - not sure how much.

Attendance has been steadily declining well before C19.

So covid could not of had any effect since attendance was already declining?

The JMU men were supposed to play at Florida for a $95k payday that was agreed upon preCovid. Nobody gets more than $70k for that kind of game anymore. COVID also made it possible to cancel the contract. They still might have played for less $, but couldn't agree on a date.

Perhaps they are thinking Covid - might also have an effect on attendance? 04-jawdrop

I get this, but Coastal Carolina isn't much of a prize. It's a small school with bad academics. They did win the College World Series in 2016 and have had recent football success. I just don't think JMU needs the kind of drum-beating that Coastal does.

That said, I think Ron Carrier, who always understood the value of football, would be in the darkest, smokiest back room he could find, making deals and winning poker hands like nobody's business.

Are we trying hard enough?
Every day I hear another prez on ESPN college football shows and I see desire manifested. Their intentions are clear and they are doing the talking, not just the AD’s.

I'm sure the Sunbelt wants us to upgrade their Baseball. 02-13-banana

a 24 year low in the last non-covid year
A couple factors may be schools pushing to increase seat taxes.

To maintain my quality of seating for VCU basketball from reseating to reseating (every 3 or 4 years) I need to increase my donation about 25% each time. Reasonably decent seats 10 years ago was maybe a $2,500 donation, those same seats are at least in the $5000 range. It's good for their P&L but I know they have pushed some of the old timers out, folks that have been consistent supporters for 30 or 40 years in exchange for big money one and done (in some cases) corporate donations. I'm all for the "success breeds success" and strike while the iron's hot but there also needs to be some considerations for the long term implications.

I feel JMU has some great student support when all things are considered. The younger generations seem to be less interested in attending live sporting events, even 1.5-2 hour basketball games. They don't seem to have the interest to sit through a 3.5 hour football game. It's then made worse when you have uncompetitive games that would put many people to sleep. Again, I think our students do a darn good job. Having a fun 500 person band doesn't hurt either.

agree with that, but also think Covid has an impact in two ways -

1) Some people don't yet feel comfortable returning to that setting.
2) Some have learned to live without going to a college game (saving time and $ watching on tv)

Certainly part of the equation - not sure how much.

Attendance has been steadily declining well before C19.

So covid could not of had any effect since attendance was already declining?
I did not say that but attendance at College and NFL games appear to be comparable to what they have been pre C19 so far this season.

I was just stating a matter of fact. There have been many reasons attendance has been declining over the last decade.

As has been stated, cell phones, social media, and the video game generation have all contributed. My Son is 21. He follows sports but none of his friends do. Participation in youth sports has also been in decline.

My old HS has had difficulty getting 30+ kids to come out for Football. It is not a small school. One of our rival schools has had such an issue that they now play 8 Man Football.

Hopefully you guys won't have to stay playing those teams for long. JMU would be a steal for the SBC.
