RE: 2021 football coaching carousel
There is emerging enthusiasm on the Stanford board to fire Shaw. I may be wrong, but it seems Stanford has done a little worse each year since he took over. This year Stanford has won only three games, I think. Lost 41-11 to Cal.

I see Shaw as Bloom's mentor. They seem to share an overly conservative approach.

By the way, there is also sentiment on the board to fire the AD.

Sonny Dykes to be announced as TCU’s coach on Tuesday. I’m sure SMU’s fans are beyond furious.

Re: Shaw, it’s really only the last few seasons that have been subpar. Five of his first six seasons were double-digit wins, but two of the last three seasons have been poor (4-8, 4-2, 3-8 so far).

There is nothing inherently bad about conservative. There is nothing wrong with conservative if you have the horses to make it work--an offensive line that can blow holes in the opposition, a superior running back who can make 4 yards out of nothing and a TD out of something, and a QB who can stand in the pocket and throw for first downs against a defense that is sitting pass on third and 8. Bloom hasn't been able to recruit those people to Rice, and he's not going to be able to. Shaw had them at Stanford for a while, but hasn't gotten them lately.

Do we hope against belief that Bloom can start getting those players at Rice, or do we say no mas?

In the old days Neely was able to get them. He was very conservative.

David Shaw with Christian McCaffrey: 30-10
David Shaw since: 29-27

They had a couple other decent weapons after McCaffrey left. None who have done much in the NFL, but guys like Bryce Love, who were collegiate stars.

Now since Love graduated, they've been well below .500.

Interesting tidbit. Job seems like a weird fit for Mack, who's been in the southeast and Texas his whole life.

"The Zips spoke earlier with University of Tennessee running backs coach Jerry Mack, per a source with intimate knowledge of the conversation, though Mack, a former offensive coordinator / assistant head coach at Rice, has since withdrawn from consideration."

Mullen had Florida in a New Year's Six bowl each of his first three years, including playing in the SEC championship game last year. But 5-6 in an acknowledged rebuilding year, and he's gone. Slightly different level of expectations from Rice. The guy is something of a jerk, and maybe he pissed off the wrong people.

Skip Holtz out at LTU. We'll be facing a team tomorrow the day after they lose their HC. Now I'm afraid we might win and call it progress.

Wow! He takes them to 8 wins and a bowl game almost every season. I'm floored!

Surprising because he had 6 out of 9 good seasons in CUSA at LT.

I'm reading that the relationship had grown 'stale,' and that LTU is looking for a fresh face and new beginning. Apparently, a lot of fans have been ready for a change. He'll find a job.

When you do 8 wins and a bowl game almost every season, fans begin to want more. I know I would.

They lost to Miss St, SMU, and NC State by a combined 10 points. Expectations in Ruston and just about everywhere else a bit higher than they are on South Main in Houston.

The decision does actually seem to be mutual. He was interviewing for other jobs already

If he strikes out on those other jobs, I wonder if we'd have a shot at him. He's clearly looking to move up, so he could be a one-and-done Todd Graham type, but where we are right now, I'd take that.
