Patterson is an egomaniac by college football standards. Would not be at Rice for more than one or two seasons before he’d quit, regardless of whatever record we achieved during that timeframe. He’s a sore loser, rants constantly and makes Bloomgren look like a choir boy when it comes to manufacturing excuses as to why TCU has slipped the last four years. Absolutely not the next guy for Rice

TCU is dumping Patterson. Rice has kept Bloomgren so far. That speaks volumes about differing expectations.

If we hired him (and if he really is an egomaniac) how fortuitous for us that we wouldn't have to change the name of the Patterson Center.

Maybe he is an egomaniac (but what successful college coach isn't? Can I introduce you to Mr. Saban or Mr. Spurrier?), but I think he is almost solely responsible for TCU's rise to football relevancy. Let's not forget that they were generally worse than us for the prior 30 years.

Maybe.

Dykes was brain dead in allowing his kicker, with about a minute left in a tie game, to kick off directly to UH's nation's best kick returner. Result: winning TD on the kick return. That was about as dumb of a coaching decision as I have seen all year.

Were you at the Rice game last weekend? I saw dozens of decisions that bad.

I'm taking into account the situation (tie game near the end of regulation), the individual returner involved, and the importance of the game (the combined record of the teams was 13-1).

Who cares about bad decisions in a game between 2 teams among the Bottom 15 in FBS?

I do, if my team is one of the two.

That's always a tough decision. The game was tied. If you kick off short, you almost inevitably give UH the ball around their 35 with about a minute left. That's plenty of time for them to move into FG range and kick the winner just as time expires. It did not work out, so it's easily criticized, but I think "brain dead" is a bit harsh.

I have often wondered about simply kicking the ball OB in those situations. Yes, you give them the ball at their 35, but you eliminate any possibility of a return further upfield, and you put the onus on your defense to keep them out of FG range.

Akron fired its coach after going 3-24 overall and 2-7 this season. By my count, here are the open jobs:

USC
Washington State
Texas Tech
TCU
LSU
Akron
UConn

I think Mike Bloomgren would be a great fit for any of these openings.

Deion Sanders and Kellen Moore on TCU’s wishlist, neither of which they will get.

Joey Mc Guire would be a great hire for Rice. He is liked in Texas High School circles and is ready to move up. I would hate losing him at Baylor, but he deserves a shot. I think he would win at Rice.

Great to see that you’re still around, Converted. A lot of us local Owls have friends &/or family who are supportive BU alums, and have enjoyed with them the Bears’ recent-year successes. Best of wishes to your family especially that fine young fellow you sent to Rice.

Bringing in Joey McGuire and David Wetzel was a brilliant first (or at least early) move by Matt Rhule when Baylor hired him. McGuire won 3 state championships in 14 years at Cedar Hill (a school that had never won a playoff game before) and is a member of the THSCA Hall of Honor. Wetzel is a Baylor grad and past president of the THSCA. Rhule was from out of state and had virtually no Texas connections. Hiring them boosted his Texas profile immediately. Even when he was losing to Liberty, I was saying he would turn it around because of those moves.

In the discussion about Patterson above, I mentioned a Texas Football poll where HS coaches across the state were asked which FBS head coach they trusted most. Patterson was the winner. Rhule was second, and that has to have been because of McGuire and Wetzel. You better believe that had a huge impact on his ability to turn that program around as fast as he did. Aranda understood the dynamic, and kept them both onboard for a reason.

Bloomgren came to Rice in a situation similar to Rhule as far as Texas connections. He did not hire the equivalent of McGuire and Wetzel. Note that he did not get similar results to Rhule.

I believe that Rice should, and in fact must, recruit nationally. The academic requirements reduce the number of fish in the pond that we can go after. But we have to build off a solid Texas base. And building solid relationships with the THSCA is step one.
