Never too early to start this thread I guess.

Randy Edsall of UConn announced yesterday he was going to retire at the end of the season. But the school and he just announced that the 63-year-old coach was retiring effective immediately.

Edsall had a really good run at Connecticut, then left to take the HC job at Maryland. He never got it going there, came back to Connecticut, and has had little or no success the second time around. He probably should have stayed at Connecticut.

Well, that’s hindsight. A UConn head coach getting a P5 offer has won the lottery. Unimaginable he would turn the offer down.

True, although I will say that I expressed the opinion that he was making a mistake at the time. Kind of like what some coaches have learned when they left Rice for greener pastures.

Maryland was a step up, but they were not P5 at the time.

In 2011, it was an AQ coach taking a job at another AQ school.

All ACC schools at the time he took the job were P5. Their move from the ACC to the B1G was simply a lateral move (P5 ---> P5).

And Ivin Jasper, the long-time Navy OC who was fired after a slow start of 10 total points through two games and only 68 total yards vs. Air Force, was re-hired by Navy today as QB coach. Word is that the Navy AD went around Niumatalolo and fired Jasper personally, and then Niumatalolo threatened to quit if Ivin wasn't reinstated. A position coaching role was the compromise.

E: Not sure how I got his name backwards. Thanks, Owl #s.

Ivin Jasper, not Jasper Ivin.

That firing struck me as particularly tough because Jasper has a son with significant health problems, and as long as he is on the staff at Annapolis, his son can use Walter Reed. Losing that access could be a significant problem for the Jasper family.

Too bad we don't have that robust Navy option offense.

34 rushes for 36 yards

Passing: 3/10 for 32 yards

And again, you are cherry-picking. So I'll cherry pick some counter points.

Army, with the same offense or an even more conservative version, has scored 38 and 43 in two games and is averaging 390 yards of total offense (299 rushing) per game.
And Air Force, who held Navy to those numbers and also runs a similar offense, has scored 35 and 23 in two games and is averaging 320 yards of total offense (290 rushing) per game.

Clearly, not quite the same level of opposition for either Army or Air Force, but still impressive numbers.

Bottom line, I think we would be thrilled to have had Army's (43-21, 4 bowls, 3 bowl wins), Navy's (33-30, 2 division champions, 3 bowls, 2 bowl wins), or Air Force's (33-22, 2 bowls, 2 bowl wins) results over the last 5 years. And note that Troy Calhoun came to Air Force from the NFL, where he was obviously involved in a very different offensive approach, but has determined that the option is the best fit for the personnel at Air Force.

You can rant all you want about wanting a passing offense, but the bottom line is wins and losses, and all three of the service academies are doing way better with wins and losses than we are while running offenses that you hate--and against generally tougher overall schedules. Mind you, I want an offense that can throw the ball effectively too, but I care more about wins than stats. In the words of long-time NFL OC Ron Erhardt, "Throw to score and run to win."

Yep. I am no longer concerned with just being "competitive" or covering the spread or anything but the W's and L's.

Just win. I don't care if we run up the middle every play or pass 50 yards downfield every play, as long as we win.

Chad Lunsford fired at Georgia Southern after a 1-3 start. He was 28-21 in his fourth season (but wasn't hired by their current AD so his job status was in doubt entering this year).

The last time Army played a tougher schedule than Rice was the 1940s.

The last time Army played a tougher schedule than Rice was the 1940s.

Navy and Air Force play the bulk of their schedules against conference opponents, as do we, and their conferences are better than CUSA. Army typically plays a couple of P5s (maybe tougher than anyone we play), a couple of FCS (typically easier than anyone we play), and the rest regional G5s (generally comparable to CUSA). And, of course, each of them play the other two in the Commander-in-Chief series. With our playing Arkansas, TexasU, and UH this year, our schedule is rated 69.36 (42nd) by Sagarin, compared to Navy's 66.75 (65th), Army's 58.03 (132nd), and Air Force's 55.84 (149th). So ours is tougher this year, at least in the eyes of Sagarin. For 2019 the Sagarin numbers were Rice 61.66, Navy 67.55, Army 60.31, and Air Force 64.71, so two of the three of them had tougher schedules, and Army's was roughly comparable. By the way, per Sagarin, at this point we'd be dogs to 47 FCS (1-AA) schools on a neutral field.

The Athletic just ran an extensive article on coaches on the hot seat around the country. They listed 2 coaches in C-USA: Middle Tennessee and North Texas (and not Rice, obviously).

The good news from the article is that if you do fire your coach this year, you have a shot at hiring Ed Orgeron from LSU. How would that be for a resume? USC West head coach; LSU head coach (wins national championship); Middle Tennessee.

Agree you'd have a shot at hiring him, but I have little doubt that Orgeron will go be a position coach or coordinator at literally any SEC school before stooping to a G5 head coach spot (Orgeron has coached at a P5 school every year since 1995, other than one year in the NFL with the Saints).

Interesting question to me (and I have no knowledge): would a guy fired from a P-5 school rather be a HC at a non P-5 school or a coordinator at another P-5 school? I would think being your own boss would be a big thing, but I also get being in the big time at a P-5 school vs. looking at the stands and seeing 3,000 people at the game, in non P-5.

Orgeron would be perfect here; he could keep his Louisiana talent pipeline open, and he wouldn't even have to tell the kids they weren't in Louisiana any more. Of course, there is one other problem: does Rice have any class and test optional majors?

03-lmfao03-lmfao @ the test optional majors

My view on the bolded question is probably age-dependent. If I'm an older guy like Orgeron (60), I'm not sure the idea of being a head coach at a low-profile school is that interesting. Orgeron's been the head coach thing at three different schools now (and won a national championship), so I'm not sure what he would feel like a G5 HC spot would accomplish. Another thing is that Orgeron has coached top athletes for the last 25+ years, so I'm not sure he'd feel like coaching "sub-par" talent at a CUSA or Sun Belt school.

But if I'm an up and coming coach who has had no or 1 head coaching stint at a P5 spot, I'm definitely taking a head coaching spot at a G5 to (re-)prove myself.
